🇪🇺 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟭𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗞𝗲𝘆𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Last week, our CEO, Dr. Robert Kilian, was invited to the 10th European AI Forum, once again bringing together recognized experts to deliver a keynote on one of the core themes of AI compliance. In his speech, Robert was diving deeper into the role of harmonized technical standards as a basis for innovation-friendly AI regulation under the EU AI Act, focusing on: 📌 Harmonized standards will be the key to EU AI Act product safety and compliance, if done right, by translating the abstract legal text into more specific threshold-based requirements technical teams are able to implement. 📌 These standards provide for legal certainty of affected companies, easier market access to the European Single Market, and promoting international trade by globally aligning AI quality practices. 📌 However, we need to foster industry (esp., SME's) participation in the CEN and CENELEC standardization process. This will help making technical standards balanced and lead to broader acceptance. 📌 Additionally, we must make sure to speed up the standardization process to ensure delivery of the technical standards in time before application of the EU AI Act high-risk requirements. Otherwise, this will lead to huge legal uncertainty. Afterwards, Robert joined a panel on the status quo of EU AI Act implementation together with esteemed fellow panelists Franziska Weindauer and Matthias Koehler.  The key issues identified were upskilling in implementing, legal certainty in interpreting the EU AI Act and necessary standardized AI assessment procedures through technical testing. Thank you to the KI Bundesverband team for organizing such a stellar event and all fellow panelists and participants for the engaging and insightful exchange!

V.) and the Bavarian AI agency BAIOSPHERE. 📄 Together, we published a policy paper addressing challenges and possible solutions for the medtech sector regarding the EU AI Act and a corresponding guideline for the product approval for medtech SMEs. The policy paper highlights the challenges arising from the complex regulatory environment of the EU AI Act, MDR and IVDR and their relationship for medtech companies: 📌 There is a lack of clarity regarding definitions of the products covered by the EU AI Act and their classification as well as the relationship and delimitations between the legal acts (esp., regarding responsibilities, monitoring, harmonisation of standards). 📌 There is uncertainty about the development stage at which the regulatory requirements of the EU AI Act start to be applicable to AI-supported medical devices, which hinders the transition of AI innovation from research to clinical application. 📌 There is a lack of infrastructure and experimental spaces (e.g., real laboratories) for processing patient data for the development and approval of AI-based medical devices. 🛠️ For CertifAI, Philipp Kürth contributed to the development of the policy paper with our regulatory expertise on the EU AI Act and its operationalization through technical standards. We are happy to offer expertise to the medtech sector and help make AI compliant and responsible through technical testing along AI quality frameworks such as the EU AI Act.

He shared why AI-based applications should be considered “loose screws”, and what to do technically to make them more robust and reliable. 🔧 This can be achieved best by integrating technical testing into your MLOps workflow to already during product development ensure the quality of the AI component. This is exactly the objective of the software we are building to provide companies with a one-stop solution for compliant, safe and reliable AI development leading to high-quality products. 💬 Thanks to the whole appliedAI team around Regina Straub, Alexander Machado, and Dr. Philipp Hartmann for the opportunity to give a presentation and network with interested individuals afterwards!

Thank you for your visit and the engaging discussion on promoting reliable and compliant AI. Especially, the exchange around the importance of international technical standardization efforts for digital regulation was insightful. Therefore, it is crucial that CEN and CENELEC fulfills the European Commission’s standardization request in support of the EU AI Act in time. The Singapore-based AI Verify Foundation was founded to harness the collective power and contributions of the global community to develop AI testing tools. It comprises around 60 members, such as IBM, Google, and Microsoft. CertifAI is always happy to connect to partners following the same mission of making AI safe, reliable and compliant.

Robert Kilian, 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗱𝗮 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰   🤖 Under the theme “New Utopias,” Ada Lovelace Festival 2024, taking place on November 6 and 7, emphasizes the transformative impact of AI. As AI technologies rapidly advance, the need for robust frameworks and practically implementable measures to ensure their trustworthiness and quality is more urgent than ever. Thank you for having us and organizing such a stellar event!   💬 Yesterday, Robert was taking the stage joining a panel discussion on 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. (Head of Regulatory Policy, Senior Manager Government Affairs @ Microsoft Germany). The discussion explored the challenges and opportunities that arise from implementing the EU AI Act, the role of testing and certification in validating AI technologies and how these measures are striking a balance between fostering innovation and ensuring trustworthiness.   💡 The panelists agreed that while the 𝗘𝗨 𝗔𝗜 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀, it also creates challenges when navigating 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆 and presupposes an 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 between regulators, companies and civil society. This is especially true for the development of technical standards expected by late 2025/early 2026, which will specify the provisions of the EU AI Act.
