In 2024, 1 trillion dollars will be spent on software worldwide, Gartner predicts. How much will go to maintenance? In software development, the work doesn't stop at launch – it’s just the beginning. Here’s why software needs to be constantly updated: 🔄 Evolving needs: Users’ needs and business goals constantly shift. What worked yesterday may not meet tomorrow’s demands. ⚒️ Migration and bug fixes: As technologies evolve and bugs surface, updates are necessary to keep things running smoothly. 🛡️ Security: Cybersecurity is a moving target. New vulnerabilities emerge regularly, and proactive updates are essential to keeping systems safe. According to the 60/60 rule proposed by Robert L. Glass (Glass, IEEE Software May 2001), on average, 60% of software lifecycle expenses go toward maintenance. 60% of this maintenance money is spent on enhancements rather than bug fixing. Here’s what our Developer Ecosystem Survey results show: ✅ Scrum remains the dominant Agile framework, with 47% of teams relying on its structured approach to navigate their projects. 🔁 Kanban, known for its flexibility and continuous flow, follows with 27%. 🧩 14% of teams prefer combining methodologies to customize their processes. 🤔 A significant 28% of respondents either don't use a framework or have opted for a different approach, perhaps indicating they might be exploring new or hybrid models. We’ve recently reworked the Code Completion feature in our IDEs, and the results speak for themselves: acceptance rate increased three times, and latency decreased four times. JetBrains offers two ways of delivering AI code completion: 🔹 Local Code Completion built into JetBrains IDEs: This works directly on your machine, providing real-time suggestions without requiring an internet connection. 🔹 Cloud-based AI Code Completion provided by JetBrains AI Assistant: This uses cloud resources to offer more precise code completion, leveraging greater computational power than local resources can provide. We decided to completely rewrite cloud completion, and we see very positive results through user feedback and usage metrics. Do you know what percentage of software development teams in today’s world are distributed? An astonishing 80%! This is according to the latest installment of the Developer Ecosystem Survey, conducted by JetBrains. 🌍 29% of respondents indicate that their teams are distributed across several countries. 1️⃣ 40% are distributed within one country. 🏙️ 11% are distributed within one city. 🏢 Only 20% operate from the same physical location, such as an office or campus. Working in distributed teams presents its challenges, like communication barriers due to time zone differences and building trust without face-to-face interaction. But the advantages, at least for some companies, outweigh the drawbacks. Organizing work in distributed teams enables companies to leverage global talent and remain flexible and resilient.
