It's live and online! A cycle time of 1 day made it possible. What was made possible? Benjamin and I were working on a Kanban Mythbuster Template and it is now officially available on Miro Miroverse. Now together with your teams you can dive into the myths and facts of Kanban and while doing this, it is strictly allowed to have fun, fruitful conversations, new learning and hopefully new ways on how to improve your Kanban practices. "Story points are crap! Stakeholders want hours, days and dates!" Do you hear that sometimes when you propose estimating in story points or t-shirt sizes? Some managers misunderstand story point (SP) estimates as a simple kinda esoteric layer to disguise real person hour estimates. This often ends in them establishing a fixed "exchange rate" between SP and person hours. But that completely misses the point of story points and relative estimation! Yet, stakeholders are right to demand specific date ranges instead of abstract SP. They need something to plan with. And the bridge between abstract story points and specific date ranges is the concept of 👉 VELOCITY Understanding velocity lets agile teams make pretty precise predictions of when stakeholders can expect to get certain features. You know, I'm firmly convinced that every product & team experience would be vastly improved from the get-go if everyone would simply crown Johanna Rothman 👑 Queen & follow her advice to eliminate your long & aging product backlogs. This "nuclear option" may seem radical. But it's truly the most rational way to gain clarity on where your product needs to be now to deliver the value your customer wants today: 'Delete everything and start new. Archive everything and start new. (Use a parking lot and don't look at it again.) Starting new means: Limit the new ideas on the backlog to just the number of items the team can finish in the next few weeks. That allows you to do one-month rolling-wave planning. If you really think you need more candidate ideas, reduce the team's cycle time by splitting stories and asking “how little” can we do to get good information. That will allow the team to finish more items so you can generate more ideas and replan more often. Are you worried about losing good ideas? Don't worry. I created a calendar for agile coaches - 1/5  ... and it now offers me solutions to the following problems in my daily work. The "Timeboxed Brain Dumb" helps me to start my working day (often the first meeting of the day) with a clear head and undivided attention. The structured workflow offered by the four fields of the model-based impulse gives me several advantages as an agile coach: - It allows me to use my time and resources efficiently by following a clearly defined process: observation -> hypothesis -> model -> impulse. - I can better plan and organize my coaching activities in order to support coachees/teams in an optimal way: I can answer comprehension questions later with a documented (by me) causal chain (even hours/days later). - A structured process helps me to keep track of ongoing impulses/initiatives in different coaching sessions/teams and not to overlook anything: I use the top field, directly below the date, as a reminder to keep track of impulses once they have been set. - This clear process, which I present transparently, allows me to avoid friction and misunderstandings with the coachee/team: Documentation and causality provide a concrete vocabulary for critical discussion. - With an established workflow, my effectiveness as a coach can be better understood: Supports my own position in interactions with leaders (in terms of my role and impact on the organization). - A structured way of working signals professionalism and increases the acceptance of my role in the organization: Traceability All in all, this workflow helps me to focus on my core task as an agile coach - which is to guide coachees/teams through change processes in the best possible way and to support and empower them in their agile development. Do your daily stand-ups feel like a waste of time? You‘re not alone. So what can you do? One option would be to stop doing daily stand-ups 🤔, but that doesn‘t fix the real problem. The smarter move: Improve your daily stand-ups by: 👉 understanding what they are REALLY for 👉 actually getting value out of the daily stand-up 👉 have it reduce meetings overall (yes, reduce!)
