I truly believe that AI in the pharma industry should be human-centric and transparent. This means AI should provide data and suggestions transparently, perform quality checks, and handle administrative tasks, while ensuring that experts remain the decision-makers. 🗣 For the past several months, I've been engaging in an unprecedented high number of conversations with former colleagues and contacts who have been made redundant from big pharma companies. The pharmaceutical industry is entering a new phase where major corporations are forced to reduce their workforce. This has led to a large influx of highly skilled professionals, with decades of experience in cutting-edge science, entering the job market in the past 18 months.  But if the big companies are cutting, the biotech landscape is thriving. Slides from the recent keynote "Biopharma Dealmaking: Time for a Re-Think" I delivered at the Swiss Healthcare Licensing Group meeting in Montreux in May are now available on the Lumanity website. https://lnkd.in/ePi9Vwse This data rich presentation is important viewing for anyone involved with or interested in biotech corp dev strategy but especially for those pre-commercial biotech "sellers" pinning their hopes on a large pharma partnership. The historically unprecedented increase in the number of biotechs reaching or surpassing clinical PoC stage (5 x or greater over past decade) coupled with a limited number of large pharma "buyers" means odds for vast majority of would be sellers are long. Many more of these biotechs should start to see self-commercializing, especially those pursuing advanced therapeutic modalities, such as cell and gene therapy, as more of a "Plan A" than B. And for many of these companies the time to get started is now, not when they are late in P3 or beyond.

Lessons for Biotech Founders from Pharma: It has been a great pleasure and honor to present at Nucleate UK – The Forum on June 7, 2024 at 22 Bishopsgate in London, together with Professor David Roblin (CEO, RelationTx) and our moderator Alya Masoud (UCL) to a large group of entrepreneurs, investors, scientists from the UK about the key learnings for transiting from positions in Big Pharma (Pfizer, Bayer, Novartis, AstraZeneca, GE Healthcare) to positions in academia (Francis Crick Institute, ETH Zurich) and finally into leadership positions at Biotech startups (RelationTx, Vector BioPharma, Mayr BioMedTech Consulting). https://lu.ma/0oll972t https://lnkd.in/ePYTzjjt Here are my recommendations: 1.        Follow the science: The pace of discovery and innovation in biomedical sciences is unprecedented in history. Development of new therapies and diagnostics should be guided by strong scientific data from the lab and the hospital. 2.        Build a strong team: The success of a startup depends on the quality of the team (science, management, leadership), combined with diversity and inclusion. This requires open minds and open borders. 3.        Create a good business plan: The speed and success of company creation, will depend on creation of a strong, clear, compelling business plan. Key questions are: Why this company? Why now? Do you know your customer? 4.        Generate a viable funding strategy: Startups need a reliable source of funding throughout the full journey. This needs close alignment with a group of knowledgeable investors who have the resources, expertise and network to finance a company. 5.        Simplify your business: Many scientists build complex technologies to solve complex problems and tend to run a complex business. Biotech startups can’t afford to do that. Simply your value proposition, simplify your financing, simplify your value proposition, simplify your path to product. 6.        Embrace learning and improvement: Initial plans for company creation and business strategy are often insufficient at the beginning, might get outdated over time and often need refinement. That requires constant learning, flexibility to adapt and passion to execute. 7.        Partnering and networking: Successful companies build early on a number of good relationships to business and academic partners, tap into their unique skills and capabilities and form strong combined activities. One of the most important skills is networking with other professionals, in science, business and finance. Finally, please remember the time for company creation has never been as good as it is now. Unprecedented pace of scientific discovery, combined with a surplus of venture funding for the right ideas, provides excellent opportunities for entrepreneurs in life sciences, around the world and, in particular, in the UK.

#News: French drugmaker Sanofi is nearing a decision to invest between 1.3 billion euros and 1.5 billion euros ($1.4-$1.6 billion) at a major production site in Frankfurt, Germany, where it makes #insulin brand #Lantus, newspaper Handelsblatt reported on Monday. The paper cited German government sources as saying Sanofi changed course after initial considerations to transfer Lantus production to France and the company is now close to committing to an upgrade of the German site in Frankfurt's Hoechst district. Sanofi did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Among recent wins by Germany's ruling coalition to attract healthcare investments, Daiichi Sankyo Europe GmbH (4568.T), said in February it would spend about 1 billion euros to boost its work on precision cancer drugs near Munich. U.S. drugmaker Eli Lilly and Company (LLY.N), in November last year pledged to invest 2.3 billion euros to make #obesity and #diabetes #drugs in Germany. Another interesting read on the richness of the ecosystem in greater Europe! Happy to see that those biotech have been adequately funded to bring them to the next value inflection point. With initial clinical data showing activity, no doubt that multiple partnerships including strategic ones will be be needed to bring more innovative differentiated drugs to patients. Always good to remember at that time that the what we aspire to become, achieve or create is the number 1 question in forging strong alliances!

As #easd2024 in Madrid kicks off, I’m excited to announce that Diamyd Medical is taking the next big step in the fight against Type 1 Diabetes by pursuing an accelerated approval pathway in the U.S. for our antigen-specific immunotherapy, Diamyd®. This precision medicine aims to preserve endogenous insulin production in patients with Stage 3 Type 1 Diabetes, specifically targeting those with the HLA DR3-DQ2 genotype.
