Often, there are no symptoms, making heart disease a silent threat that can affect any of us. Though in Switzerland, we have the fifth-lowest incidence of cardiovascular diseases within the ESC Atlas of Cardiology, it is the leading cause of death, with around 20,000 people dying from it annually. This highlights the urgent need for preventive action. As we approach #WorldHeartDay on September 29, it is even more important to prioritize our heart health. MASH, often referred to as a 'silent disease', presents minimal symptoms, especially in its early stages. As the prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes continues to rise—both significant risk factors for MASH—the number of individuals affected by this chronic disease is increasing. Recognizing and diagnosing MASH can be challenging due to its non-specific symptoms, including abdominal and back pain, fatigue, and weakness. For individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and obesity, the FIB-4 index serves as a potent tool for identifying those with a high risk of liver disease. Early diagnosis is crucial, as lifestyle adjustments like diet and exercise can sometimes effectively halt the progression of MASH and, in certain instances, even reverse early-stage liver damage. After some years advocating DE&I particularly in Women In Leadership chapter, I still feel disappointed how people comment on female leaders. These are what I heard recently: - “woman bosses are usually too emotional” - “most female leaders tend to micromanage their team” - “She is too aggressive and not feminine enough” Women leaders have often faced unique challenges and barriers compared to their male counterparts, including: 1. Gender Stereotypes and Discrimination: - Women leaders are frequently judged more harshly on their appearance, personality, and communication style compared to men. - They are often expected to conform to traditional feminine stereotypes while also demonstrating traditionally "masculine" leadership qualities. 2. Work-Life Balance and Family Responsibilities: - Women leaders still tend to shoulder a disproportionate share of childcare and household duties, making it more difficult to dedicate time to their careers. - Maternity leave and pregnancy can create perceived gaps in experience that male leaders do not face. 3. Access to Mentorship and Networking: - Women have historically had fewer opportunities to cultivate influential mentors and sponsors, which can hinder career advancement. - Male-dominated professional networks can be more difficult for women leaders to access and leverage. 4. Double Standards and Heightened Scrutiny: - Women leaders' mistakes or missteps are often magnified and criticized more heavily than those of male counterparts. - They face higher expectations to be "perfect" and flawless in their leadership. 5. Threats, Harassment, and Lack of Personal Safety: - Women leaders, especially in politics, are more likely to face threats, harassment, and concerns about personal safety. - This can create additional stresses and barriers that male leaders do not have to navigate. Despite these challenges, the women leaders highlighted have demonstrated remarkable resilience, innovation, and impact. Their ability to succeed in the face of such obstacles is a testament to their remarkable leadership abilities. Addressing and removing these systemic barriers is crucial for creating a more equitable path to leadership for women. Gender equity is not just a ratio between man and woman. 𝐑𝐨𝐜𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭-𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭-𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐬 Roche has announced plans to accelerate the production of a new weight-loss pill to vie with competitors like Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk in the expanding obesity treatment market. Thomas Schinecker, CEO of Roche, conveyed to the Financial Times that the company anticipates its inaugural obesity drugs to hit the market much sooner than expected, potentially as early as 2028. The forthcoming offerings include a weight-loss injection slated for phase II trials and a pill that demonstrated a 6.1% weight reduction relative to a placebo over a four-week period. Following the acquisition of biotech firm Carmot last year for up to $3.1 billion, Roche is set to introduce several drugs under this deal, with details revealed for three key assets. Schinecker mentioned that the acquisition could yield approximately seven drugs, some still in early developmental stages. Last week's data publication regarding the pill caused Roche's stock to surge by 6% on that day, while impacting the shares of rival companies Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, raising concerns about Roche’s potential to challenge their market dominance. Analysts at Goldman Sachs have projected that the obesity drug market could exceed $130 billion by 2030, as various companies aim to launch their treatments. Despite this, Roche must bridge the gap with frontrunners who are developing more potent and effective treatments. For instance, Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy and Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro have led to 15% and 20% weight losses, respectively, in trials extending beyond a year. Other pharmaceutical firms, including Boehringer Ingelheim and Pfizer, are also in the race to develop obesity drugs, while US biotech Viking Therapeutics saw a 30% jump in shares after announcing progress to late-stage trials for its obesity pill. Schinecker highlighted that Roche’s pill is easier to scale up as it is synthetically produced, unlike the peptide-based drugs like those from Novo Nordisk. However, Emily Field from Barclays noted that it’s premature to determine if Roche can disrupt the advantage held by Novo and Lilly. Roche has recently streamlined its drug development pipeline, cutting 25% of underperforming drugs and focusing on a smaller selection of promising candidates, including those for obesity and Alzheimer’s diseases. This strategic shift allows for better allocation of resources towards more promising projects. Despite recent setbacks in research, including a failed lung cancer drug trial, Roche remains optimistic about its obesity drugs, potentially integrating them with other treatments for related conditions. Here are my key takeaways from this insightful event: 1️⃣ Importance of Patient Inclusion: It's evident that patient inclusion is a priority for various stakeholders, including governmental healthcare institutions, research bodies, patient organizations, and industry leaders. However, the lack of established guidelines and processes means we still have work to do to foster systematic inclusion. 2️⃣ Early Involvement & Partnership: Patients desire to be engaged early in healthcare processes, contributing with a relevant voice at a partnership level. Their insights are crucial to shaping effective healthcare strategies that truly address patient needs. 3️⃣ Recognizing Patient Expertise: It's time for us to view patients as experts in their own right, not merely as laymen. This recognition should extend to appropriate remuneration for their contributions, underscoring the value they bring to the table. Just finished reading “The Resilient Culture: How Collective Resilience Leads to Business Success" from Awaris GmbH and Awaris UK. I have to admit that I might have been a bit biased because I have been working for many years with Awaris when I was with Novartis. It's a well researched and at the same time practical enough book. You will most benefit from it when you are working in a cooperation and want to introduce positive changes in your culture. But everyone else will also find practical tips in it. Not a surprise that it's all about resilience (and some mindfulness as well). Resilience has almost become a bit of a buzzword during the years of lockdown as it felt it's a “weapon” for everything. This book demystifies that and provides clear definitions and steps for a cultural/team or individual transformation. Within the first few minutes of an interview I already decided whether it's a YES or a NO. If it's a YES, it is likely to stay YES unless they really eff up the rest of interview. If it's a NO, I cannot recall anyone has ever been able to change my mind to a YES. So the first few minutes is very important. First impression matters. The historically unprecedented increase in the number of biotechs reaching or surpassing clinical PoC stage (5 x or greater over past decade) coupled with a limited number of large pharma "buyers" means odds for vast majority of would be sellers are long. Many more of these biotechs should start to see self-commercializing, especially those pursuing advanced therapeutic modalities, such as cell and gene therapy, as more of a "Plan A" than B. And for many of these companies the time to get started is now, not when they are late in P3 or beyond.

My son is way smarter than I think. He is starting Ice Hockey this year. A pre-requisite for Ice Hockey? Ice skating! In his Ice Hockey program, they will teach Ice Skating as the first step. But he wanted to be ahead of the game. So he had been learning Ice Skating for the past three seasons. And now he can make the most out of the program: 1. Make it to an advanced group 2. Continue to improve skating skills 3. Have an awesome hockey season A 5 year old gets it. Most job seekers don’t. You must practice your interview skills before you go to the interview. Attend interviews when you DON’T need a job. So that you can ace the interview when you WANT the job. That’s how you improve. That’s how you stay ahead of the game. PS. 🥳 This week I am, as many others at Bayer, celebrating 1 year since we started our journey as coaches, catalysts and architects of one of the biggest and most epic transformations in the corporate world. 🇩🇪 1 year ago, I travelled to our Germany headquarters to attend a 3 day session to learn more about our transformation journey and I received an invitation to become a coach. 🏆Since then, a lot has happened. And as I was reflecting on it, I was attracted by the difference between “Winning Shallow” and “Winning Deep”, a concept that was coined by Dr Pippa Grange , author of best selling book “Fear Less” and former head of people and team development at the football (soccer) association in the UK among other impressive roles in her career. 👎🏼“Winning Shallow is when people achieve something and within a day of that achievement, the scarcity mentality creeps in again. Many high achievers can’t basically feel their success, they can’t enjoy it for a second because straight away they are into the next thing”. 👎🏼“When we win shallow, we feel urgency. It is about winning to avoid not being good enough and we never, really, truly, wholeheartedly believe that we’re enough. It is comparative, it is about dominating the other and we are never going to feel fulfillment in that”. 🏅“Winning deep is where you can feel the richness of your journey. You are attached to the joy and the struggle. You are attached to the mess. And it is generally done for reasons outside of yourself and a fulfillment of our egoic needs. It is done more from a soul level. It is done because we can. And because there is a wild desire in it”. 🏅“Winning deep is a soulful, deep joy in having achieved something. You have to feel your achievements” 🏅Today and for the most part of the transformational journey, I have decided to win deep. 🏅We have accomplished a lot and we deserve to feel it and enjoy it. 🏅There has been joy and struggle, it has definitely been messy but the purpose of what we are doing is above all of us. 🏅We can do this, we can be a better company for patients, farmers and consumers. 🏅We can be a better company for all of us working here, with the best growth and development opportunities, with the best rewards we have ever seen. 🏅The months ahead of us will continue to be challenging and we will persevere with the same enthusiasm and hope that has brought us here and driven by the firm belief that what we are doing matters and that it will offer us and the generations to come a much brighter future. 🥂Cheers to the next 12 months and for many more to come!
