Most of us agree that collaboration and inclusion are essential to teaming. But, as this piece from The Atlantic points out, it comes at a price. “We’re spending more time talking about work than actually working.” Interesting stats include: - We’re working from home 400% more than before the pandemic. - MSFT study found 33% of workers are as likely to be working at 10pm as 8am - Since 2020 we’re spending 300% as much time in meetings. How do you find a balance between time spent creating and time spent communicating? Can we do both well within 50 hrs/wk?

Canada competes against other countries for ideas/companies, investment, and talent. We are in a good place from a company creation perspective. Access to investment and talent is key to driving the companies forward. This tax increase will make Canada less competitive in attracting and retaining both.

Last week was the World Muscle Society conference. Sarepta had seven different posters/presentations for its on-market gene therapy in Duchenne, Elevidys. However, perhaps the most interesting Duchenne presentation came from Pfizer who presented data on CIFFREO, which *was* Pfizer's Phase III study of gene therapy in Duchenne. What’s neat about this presentation is that Pfizer discontinued the development of this therapy after its Phase III failed in June. While earlier this year, Pfizer had already noted no significant difference in key secondary endpoints like the 10-meter walk velocity or Time To Rise, on Saturday, they noted that there was no significant difference in motor function improvement in any age subgroup. The takeaway here is that – even when we don’t succeed – we gain new information and sharing it with the community is the right thing to do, for everyone’s benefit. Predicting success is tough to do but the growing body of data increases our chances of eventually getting therapies right. This is what happiness looks like across the world. The data comes from the World Happiness Report put together by Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Networks and the World Happiness Report’s Editorial Board. Some say you can’t measure happiness but this report says otherwise. Interestingly. The 2024 edition focuses on the happiness of people at different stages of life. Their data shows that among those born after 1980, happiness falls with each year of age. Among those born before 1965, life evaluations rise with age. Any thoughts on why this is? Could technology and over-reliance on digital connection play a part? #WorldHappinessReport

Mentoring can be one of the most rewarding things you can do within a workplace, but it comes with risks on both sides of the relationship. I'm a keen advocate of contracting at the start of any mentoring relationship but found this article helpful for technique in how to reset boundaries when needed. It can be hard for a mentee, who often is more junior and by definition has less psychological safety, to establish boundaries - even more so if they are from an underrepresented community or acting as a reverse mentor. As a member of the Boston innovation ecosystem, I am often asked what I think will be the next emerging life sciences hub in the US or abroad – what do I think is “the one to watch”. I believe scientific innovation can happen anywhere that people are asking the right questions and pushing boundaries to find new solutions to existing problems or pivot existing solutions to approach problems in a new way. The challenge is: how does innovation become something more than an idea? I think we will continue to see life sciences hubs emerge and thrive in areas that not only have great talent, but also the right resources that enable biotechs to succeed. Last week, I joined our partner Portal Innovations, LLC for an Investor Day in Chicago where I had the opportunity to speak with Anna Tomaszewski about how pharma companies and investors can collaborate effectively to drive innovation. Venture groups and pharma companies come to the table with different expertise and viewpoints – but by combining these capabilities, we break barriers to these resourcing challenges and ignite innovation that otherwise might not be possible. Thank you Mary Lou Jepsen for a great article and also for the commitment to and leadership of open-source innovation with Openwater.health. Biopharma and biotechnology trailblazers, particularly those navigating mid-small-micro cap waters, face tremendous challenges across the board. And, not just in development. Certainly in development stages, the FDA is trying to keep pace with completely new frameworks they must consider and review. Developers must adapt to these learning curves and survive the process. If they do, the challenges often continue after approval. With desperately needed rare disease innovations, such as gene therapies, we are seeing business model issues hit developers and patient access. As the industry turns its attention to the Holy Grail of mass market ultra blockbusters, it's possible, if not probable, that more and more rare disease development programs will get shelved due to seemingly insurmountable challenges. "Go it alone" or waiting for the lucrative deal isn't a realistic option for too many developers. For many of us who care deeply about these underserved populations, throwing up our hands and giving up simply isn't an acceptable option. Patients and their families with few to no options are waiting for their miracle. #raredisease #biotech #innovation
