Recovering from failure is essential in avoiding the negative spirals of shame and defensiveness that often follow mistakes — how we handle our mistakes can define our path to personal and professional growth, and how happy we are in general. In one study, researchers explored the impact of mindfulness on how employees and healthcare workers respond to their own errors. The study: over 200 participants were divided into 3 groups for a 12-week study - one received mindfulness training, another engaged in Pilates, and a third group received no special treatment. The results: those in the mindfulness group, who practiced non-judgmental awareness, were notably less likely to conceal their errors compared to the other groups. This suggests that a mindful approach can foster a more open and learning-oriented environment at work, not only helping personal growth but also enhancing organizational growth by allowing mistakes to be openly discussed and learned from. The reminds me of the study on athletes that found that one of the defining factors of the highest performers was what their self-talk sounded like after missing a shot. Cognitive ability Vs. Conscientiousness. A visiting scholar asked me what the difference is between Cognition & Conscientiousness, and the answer is quite simple. 🧠 You do not have to be smart to do the right thing!! ⚖️ Cognition means knowing. Knowing can be conscious or unconscious. Conscious cognition equates to awareness. Awareness is the conscious experience of knowing what something is or what it means. ✨ There is no correlation between cognitive ability and conscientiousness! 💫 While conscientiousness and cognitive ability are often positively linked to work-related outcomes, empirical data shows a negative association between the two variables. ✨ https://lnkd.in/eq7KGhP4

Coaches, OD consultants and psychologists: I am in the early stages of writing a book which I am confident will be of interest to many of you. Right now, I am researching what books, chapters and research literature already exist on the topics of CONTRACTING and CONTAINMENT, specifically for coaching/mentoring professionals and OD/LD consultants. As expected, I have found many books which reference these topics and the importance of various aspects of contracting well - but nothing substantial that addresses this comprehensively - only sections of chapters in books with a broader overall scope. 𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙙 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙯𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣? At our recent "𝐻𝑒𝒶𝓁𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝒯𝒽𝓇𝑜𝓊𝑔𝒽 𝒮𝑒𝓃𝓈𝒾𝓃𝑔" workshop, I guided a meditation to connect with our inner child by offering them love and care. It highlighted visualization's potential for healing. So I thought I would share 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 in guided meditations: 🔬 Studies by researchers like Hölzel et al. (2011) and Lutz et al. Inner child work as part of the Executive Coaching process?! In terms of the work I do with my Founder & CEO clients — it’s an ESSENTIAL piece of the puzzle. Yesterday my dear friend, the brilliant Vienna Pharaon, LMFT and I led a discussion inspired by my coaching practice and her bestselling book, “The Origins of You.” The topic? “Burnout & the Worthiness Wound” We can all agree that burnout is at epidemic levels and ESPECIALLY prevalent in the startup founder community. We know that long hours and high stress are a PART of the puzzle but if those were the *only* causal factors — then even MORE folks would be burnt out… So what’s the missing piece that causes some of us to burnout while others roll with the punches? 🧒🏽👧🏼Conditioning we picked up in childhood. By nature I am #curious. Which is probably why I am a #coach - because I get this chance to explore that curiosity with my #clients and myself every day. At the heart of great coaching is intuitive #listening and using that to ask provocative #questions. I asked this simple question during a #teamcoaching session this week after the team self-directed towards a decision and commitment: "what just happened?" Allowing time and space to explore how a shift happened is as powerful as the #shift itself. #TGIF

The Schema Octagon sets out the key ideas in Schema Coaching. This new method has a strong foundation in schema therapy that has been used in many parts of the world for over 20 years as a highly successful approach for helping clients with anxiety and depression, as well as more severe personality disorders. The new Schema Coaching book provides clear practical guidelines, illustrative case studies and reflective practice exercises to those who wish to implement a range of schema techniques when coaching with the non-clinical population. The book is in two parts, the first is primarily designed for coaches that do not have clinical, counselling or psychotherapy training and the second includes more advanced techniques which are designed for coaches with this type of training or qualifications. Nonviolent Communication Marshall Rosenberg, the person and pioneer behind nonviolent communication (NVC), developed this profound method after observing and understanding how people connect across various cultures and situations. His deep-seated belief was that genuine communication holds the power to heal conflicts and foster peace. With an open heart, Rosenberg shared NVC in over 60 countries, impacting countless lives worldwide. His teachings continue to resonate deeply with those yearning for more harmonious relationships. Understanding Nonviolent Communication Nonviolent communication is more than just a conversation style; it's a heartfelt approach designed to create safe spaces where everyone involved can express themselves openly and with empathy. Emerging in the 1960s, NVC gained traction based on the beautiful premise that every human carries within them the seed of compassion. According to its principles, individuals only turn to violence or harmful behaviours when they struggle to find better ways to meet their needs. NVC aims to nurture more loving and peaceful interactions by gently guiding people towards peaceful resolutions through empathetic language and understanding. *Observations** Simply stating what we notice without adding our judgments or interpretations helps create an environment where the other person feels safe to express themselves. For example, instead of saying, "You're always late," try saying, "I noticed that you arrived 30 minutes after the scheduled time." This way, you're sharing an observation rather than making them feel criticized. **Feelings** Sharing how certain situations affect us can foster genuine connections and deeper understanding. If someone's lateness negatively affects you, instead of saying, "You're always late, and it's so frustrating," share your feelings openly: "I feel anxious and stressed when someone is late because I'm worried about not being able to complete everything on time." **Needs** Clearly stating what you need in a situation can make it easier for more effective communication and collaboration. For instance, if punctuality is essential to you for smooth functioning, Instead of expressing anger by saying something like "You're disrespecting my time," explain your needs calmly: "I need clear expectations and reliable timelines to feel comfortable and work effectively." **Requests** Inviting others to meet your needs through specific requests encourages cooperation. Rather than pointing fingers with statements such as "You're always late," frame it as a request like this: "Can you let me know in advance if you're running late next time so I can plan accordingly?" Want to improve your relationships and reduce conflicts? The Science Makes Sense - Neuroscientist Grit Hein's research shows that learning empathy is key. Her studies found that positive interactions with people from different backgrounds can actually change our brains, making us more empathetic. In Switzerland, Hein's team paired Swiss participants with both Swiss and Balkan individuals, who often face prejudice. The results? Positive experiences with out-group members increased empathy. Other research confirms that the more we know about others, the more empathetic we become. So, I started reflecting on this question: 🎯 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬?
