Can AI Become Conscious? Exciting new research is tackling a mind-bending question: Could AI systems become conscious? Here's what you need to know: 🔬 Wanja Wiese (Institute of Philosophy at Ruhr-Universität Bochum in Germany) is exploring which AI systems are unlikely to be conscious. Why? To avoid accidentally creating conscious AI and to prevent deception by AI that seems conscious but isn't. He refers to renowned British neuroscientist Karl Friston’s Free Energy Principle. According to this Principle, the processes that ensure the continued existence of a self-organizing system such as a living organism can be described as a type of information processing. 🧠 Key finding: The way information flows in our brains vs. computers might be crucial for consciousness. Unlike computers, our brains don't separate data storage, processing, and retrieval. 💡 Implications for us: 1. The stats in this article are staggering. People will argue with the investment percentages here and there, but the reality is this — even when the gender who understands their own body the most in terms of specific opportunities in diagnostics and therapies in #Femtech — female founders continue to be disadvantaged when it comes to venture capital. I heard a prominent speaker at the #MaRsimpactHealth event this month say that the only area with increased investments in the last quarter is FemTech and diagnostics. I can think of at least three companies that are doing both, led by Canadian women who are having trouble raising today. This has to change. Why? It’s not about funding women. It’s not about women funding women. It’s about humans funding ventures that are successful. Ones that can be massive and raise value for all genders. I have a personal bias towards strategic angels who come in and help startups with more than $$$. But, they need more than that. We need big capital to realize the benefits of Canadian healthTech innovations that impact our society every day. And we need this for the strength of our #CanadianTechEcosystem. If you identify as a male reading this with skepticism, give your head a shake. Do you have a mother or a daughter or a sister or female friends who need your help today? As an example I was reminded recently by Founder Angela Johnson of sanoLiving — menopause is NOT a female issue. When a health condition impacting 51% of the population is not managed effectively during the most critical working years of a woman’s life, ALL genders get impacted by this. So menopause is a HUMAN issue. Sadly, there’s minuscule movement in this area in the world of traditional VCs who play along and “soft circle” these ventures (a new term I learned recently meaning you don’t have the guts to go first and will wait for others to go in and do their due diligence before you do). I am encouraged by a few VCs who are taking this risk wisely — not because the founder is a woman, but because it’s likely they’ll be taking a risk on a kick-ass #Entrepreneur who will make them loads of return. What happens when innovative health research meets a novel approach to developing knowledge translation skills? Earlier today, I was finalizing a workshop flow for a top European #pharmaceutical #leadership team. In that process, all of the sudden, it hit me: we can talk about any leadership skill we want; we can talk about any leadership skill which might be needed. But none of them - not a one - will fly without our #ownership of our own growth. Without #ownership, none of us takes the ball we have agreed would be good for us (even if we don't want it) and runs with it. Without #ownership, we have no chance - absolutely none- of realizing that #vision we say we want for ourselves. It takes a lot of #courage and #integrity to go beyond merely saying what we want to actually making it happen. It takes real leaders to name what needs changing and do something about it.
