It seems the UK’s Conservative Party are bound to lose the General Election, regardless of when in the year they call it. Damage limitation is now the name of the game. But, the question remains: who stands to benefit? Will Kingston-Cox argues that despite the Conservative Party's decline, it's misguided to assume all right-leaning voters will flock to Labour under Keir Starmer, as he lacks Tony Blair's broad appeal. Instead, figures like Dominic Cummings, with his new "Start-Up Party," and others like Matt Goodwin, seek to fill the ideological gap with new right-wing alternatives. According to The Washington Post’s polling average, neither Vice President Kamala Harris nor former president Donald Trump is currently clearly favored in enough states to get to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. Harris is ahead in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Nevada, while Trump leads in Georgia and Arizona. North Carolina is tied. But with the help of our polling averages, we’ve identified five likely paths to the White House based on Harris and Trump’s standing in the polls. We’ve also identified three less likely paths, including a tie in the electoral college.

FLiRT Covid Subvariants Detected in Australia | Zelenskyy Seeks Defence Systems A new family of COVID-19 subvariants, known as FLiRT, has been detected in Australia after spreading through the United States. These subvariants, derived from the JN.1 variant and including KP.1 and KP.2, are more transmissible but generally result in less severe illness. The World Health Organization is monitoring these variants due to their potential impact on global health. With cases on the rise, Australian health officials urge continued vigilance and public health measures to curb the spread. In other news, the New South Wales government has announced a two-year extension for the Eraring Power Station, Australia’s largest coal-fired power plant. This decision, made in agreement with Origin Energy, aims to prevent electricity shortages and ensure a reliable energy supply while more renewable sources are developed. Origin Energy may further extend the plant's operations until 2029 without state compensation. The Chinese People's Liberation Army has launched a series of military drills around Taiwan, coinciding with the inauguration of President Lai Ching-te, creating tension in the Taiwanese Strait. Recent analysis suggests that China's strategy may involve blockading Taiwan rather than a full-scale invasion, leading to a vulnerability for the island due to its heavy reliance on trade. If a blockade were to occur, the US and its allies would face the difficult choice of allowing Taiwan to be starved into submission or engaging in a confrontation with China, which could have severe economic consequences for the global economy. 🚨 NEW REPORT: Over the course of ten days in summer 2024, a wave of rioting and disorder broke out across the UK, in particular across England. It was sparked by the killing of three young girls at a dance class in Southport on 29th July, following which far right and anti-immigrant protestors gathered outside a mosque in the town. This was catalysed by false online rumours that the individual responsible for the murder of the three girls was a recently arrived Muslim asylum seeker. The mosque in Southport was attacked, a police van set alight, and a number of police officers were injured. In the days afterwards, similar unrest occurred in over 30 different towns and communities across the country. It was the most widespread outbreak of civil unrest and racial violence in the UK since 2011. Over 1,200 people were arrested, with around a third having been jailed since. What happened in Southport was tragic, but it did not in isolation give rise to the widespread violence and racism that proliferated in the days afterwards. These riots, and the worsening climate of social cohesion, did not occur in a vacuum. Incidences of religiously motivated hate crimes are at a record high, having increased by 25% year on year between 2022 and 2024. Immigration was also one of the top issues during the 2024 general election, with heated debate about how to address illegal migration alongside differing proposals around the numbers of legal migrants and asylum seekers the county should welcome. In response to this, Hannah Rich set out to explore how churches in the direct vicinity of violent disorder responded, both in the immediate aftermath and in the weeks and months since. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eDZShmEy It sought to find whether there was anything distinctive about the churches’ response, what they learned from this, and what this can teach us going forward, both in healing from this summer’s events and in preventing them occurring again. Its conclusion? ⛪️ Those responsible for cohesion policy and resilience, locally and nationally, should actively include churches/faith communities in their planning processes. 🤝 We need to not rush to find easy solutions but rather engage in the deep listening needed to genuinely heal fractured lives and communities. 🧕 Lessons should be learnt from the lack of community engagement that has sometimes marked the handling of the asylum seeker hotels. 🧑‍🎓 Policymakers and churches with involvement in the education system should ensure a level of RE provision commensurate with its indispensable role in building stronger communities.

The qualified immunity doctrine was established to shield government officials from accountability when they violate people’s rights. The doctrine’s stated purpose is to help government officials do their jobs more efficiently, but its main effect has been to make it easier for government officials — from police officers to college administrators— to violate people’s constitutional rights with impunity. Since its adoption, qualified immunity has essentially nullified accountability for government officials— even for indisputable constitutional violations or egregious acts like murder. Too often, this leaves citizens hopelessly deprived of any chance for accountability or recourse. But isn’t the whole point of the First Amendment to limit what the government can do to the people? And when courts grant immunity to government officials who violate the First Amendment, what’s left to deter them from continued abuse of power? The bottom line is that qualified immunity threatens everyone’s expressive freedoms. If it’s not reformed soon, the dangerous doctrine will further undermine our First Amendment rights, leaving the people with no remedy for the abuse of power the Bill of Rights was meant to protect us from.
