Toward One Wisconsin 2024 features a timely and important plenary session, titled "Third Space: Jewish Muslim Discourse in Divided Times." Presented by two experts on Jewish and Muslim relations, The Divided Times Discourse will focus on the fallout from the Israel/Palestine conflict, specifically its effects on Jewish and Muslim communities in the United States and Europe. Centering on the diasporic context, the presenters will further illuminate how and why Jewish-Muslim relations (entailing a long history of intellectual, theological and social entanglements) should not be reduced to the conflict. They will further engage with these relations, both in terms of the conflict and beyond it, as a means to establish a discursive culture in democratic societies, highlighting a “third space”, that is a space between supposedly binary positions. Through this discussion, they will address forms of hate and exclusion, such as antisemitism and Islamophobia, which threaten to undermine democratic culture and unity. You can learn more about this presentation on our website: https://lnkd.in/gSA4bdmN. Register for the 2024 Toward One Wisconsin Conference, taking place in Eau Claire May 7&8, to see this presentation and many more! Learn more and register at t1w.org.

Covering Islam- Edward W. Said My new read! Highly recommended! How the Media and the Experts Determine How We See the Rest of the World is a thought-provoking analysis of how Western media and political narratives shape perceptions of Islam. One of the key strengths of Covering Islam is its critique of how knowledge is produced and disseminated. Said challenges readers to question who controls the narratives about Islam and how these narratives serve particular interests, especially in the context of Western foreign policy. He highlights the consequences of these representations for both Muslims and Western societies, particularly in fostering misunderstanding and conflict. In today’s world, where Islamophobia and misinformation about Muslims remain pervasive, Covering Islam continues to resonate. It urges readers to critically examine media portrayals and to seek a more nuanced understanding of Islam and the Muslim world. The book remains a crucial text for anyone interested in media studies, postcolonial theory, and global politics.

My argument effectively critiques the notion that Islam is responsible for the challenges faced by Muslim-majority countries by emphasizing the role of imposed secularism and the lack of alignment between constitutional frameworks and cultural values. By recognizing these dynamics, I advocate for a more nuanced understanding of how societies can navigate their identities while achieving progress.

It's time for a paradigm shift We all have a Problem. Yes, there is a cause & effect, action -> reaction narrative, but it's time to change the language to a solution-based narrative. ❌ Problem: The #october7massacre and its aftermath. ❌ Problem: 136 Israeli civilians are held hostage fro 149 days. ❌ Problem: Israeli civilians want to live in peace, but Palestinians don't. ❌ Problem: War is horrific and it costs too many lives. ❌ Problem: The economic costs of war and its aftermath. ❌ Problem: Worldwide antisemitism has skyrocketed since #october7massacre worldwide. ❌ Problem: Religious radicalism is on the rise. ❌ Problem: Progress & liberalism seems to be missing the point. ❌ Problem: Facts matter less than propaganda. ❌ Problem: Populism outweighs doing the right thing. ❌ Problem: Global hypocrisy is skyrocketing. ❌ Problem: the United Nations is supporting and endorsing terror through UNRWA. ❌ Problem: No better future in the region in sight. These are all heavy issues. Are there any feasible solutions? Who can make it happen and how?

My counterargument effectively challenges the notion of "restoring Jewish sovereignty in their ancestral homeland" by highlighting the potential dangers of using ancestral claims as a basis for establishing sovereignty. The historical context of imperialism and colonization demonstrates how such reasoning can be misused to justify land usurpation and violence. The Palestinian struggle for self-determination is rooted in their legitimate claims to their land and their rights as an indigenous population. Acknowledging the complexities of historical grievances and the need for justice for all affected populations is essential for fostering understanding and working towards a just resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In summary, while ancestral claims can hold significant emotional and cultural weight, they must be approached with caution to avoid perpetuating cycles of injustice and conflict.

"Gaza has exposed western hypocrisy and double standards, and it has shaken liberalism to its core. Liberal intellectuals have long claimed the moral high ground by championing justice whether it be in favour or against western interests. Why is the Israeli situation different? When blind loyalty becomes the sole or primary consideration, then what makes liberalism different from tribalism?" My latest for Middle East Eye. Link to full article in comments. Hypocrisy but more structural racism in western liberalism. From the beginning, freedom, liberty and equality in western modernity was formed and conceptualized strictly for white folks. It didn’t include black and brown folk. Three recent scholarly books document and support the above conclusion. White Freedom - Stoval White Borders - Jones Ugly Democracy - Anker

CW: Deep themes, past and ongoing genocides. Select panels from Attack on Titan Chapter 127: Night of The End - Story and art by Hajime Asiyama. - Zoom in for text. - Replace certain words and these panels can be applied to many past and ongoing conflicts. - Like Hange Zoë (character with eyepatch), also believe that genocide is wrong regardless of who the targeted people are. #attackontitan #AOT #HajimeAsiyama #hangezoe #zoehange #ceasefirenow #stopgenocide #nowar #refugeeswelcome #alwayswasalwayswillbeaboriginalland #freepalestine #freecongo #freesudan #freekurdistan #freemyanmar #freeuighurs #slavaukraini #stopracism #freeyemen #stopmisogyny #womensrightsarehumanrights #transrightsarehumanrights #disabilityjustice
