💭 I was reflecting on the true value of connecting—beyond mere networking. Recently, an interesting discussion with two colleagues, who quickly landed job offers after returning to corporate life following a break, triggered a realization. When I asked about the secrets to their quick success, both highlighted their strong connections as crucial. Of course, they also have proven experience and knowledge for the roles in question. Let’s not romanticize it 🫣 Anyway, this conversation challenged my perspective from networking to the profound impact of truly connecting. It's not just about accumulating contacts but about forging meaningful relationships that enrich both our personal and professional lives. I reached out to my dearest Roberto Ferraro and of course, he already had an illustration about what I wanted to discuss here—if you don’t follow him, pause this reading and check his profile. Having recently found a headhunter that is passionate and committed to supporting the over 50’s, I was delighted to find an example of an agency/platform in Switzerland that focusses on the numerous benefits this generation can offer employees. Seniors @work is based in Zurich and leading the way in connecting over 50’s talent and employees. They are a Swiss company with a platform, that brings together experienced 50+ & retired professionals with companies and private individuals for jobs & projects. They combine the potential of the older generation with the shortage of skilled workers in Switzerland and thus offer a win-win situation for both sides This concept is attractive for employers, at seniors@work, employers will find 50+ and retired professionals that you wouldn't find elsewhere. This helps you find suitable experienced candidates who can quickly add value. I would love to see and encourage more headhunters and employment agencies in this country take the lead on promoting the services of the over 50’s . Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to join other leaders from Siemens Healthineers in an innovation exchange with our partner UNICEF. We discussed a number of challenges in improving access to healthcare in LMICs including developing the business case to secure resources as well as scaling beyond successful pilot projects and the importance of alignment among the different actors on the intended impact. What struck me is that although we approach the topic from different angles, our two organizations share a strong commitment to applying innovation to improving healthcare for the most vulnerable. The discussions that resonated with me the most were around setting the priority for what you are seeking to achieve.  One of the innovation managers in the room defined the remit for himself and his team as "acceleration of impact".  Essentially impact + speed -- what a powerful way to approach innovation for low resource environments! We discussed that there are a lot of good ideas to be leveraged, but speed and agility are critical to ensure communities benefit from those solutions.  In the area of idea generation, there is a strong focus on "from the field to the field". UNICEF has country teams in most countries of the world, and they drive their innovation process from the perspective of the field based teams to match country needs with practical solutions, often co-developed with industry partners, very effectively.  This perspective to start "on the ground" listening to local needs is really best practice for both product and service innovation. Zimmer partnering with Arnold Schwarzenegger as their first-ever Chief Movement Officer is a great thing for medtech and patients. Here's my take on why👇️ The collaboration is aimed at tackling one of the most pressing global healthcare challenges: helping people move pain-free, live longer, and stay active at any age. 600M people worldwide are impacted by arthritis 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝟓% 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. As a result, many turn to pain medications yet still are limited in their movement and mobility, thus dont exercise or engage in outdoor activities. 3 ways the partnership solves for this: 1. Arnold brings his decades-long fitness crusade and his story of overcoming joint replacements to inspire patients worldwide to embrace mobility solutions without fear. 2. Zimmer is already leveraging tools like AI, predictive analytics, and wearables (in partnership with Apple and Microsoft) to enhance patient outcomes and reduce treatment times. 3. Yesterday, I saw a movie that I highly recommend. It tells the story of a man of #vision, #conviction, and #determination, Richard Montañez. He is undoubtedly a hero. However, there is another hero in this story: Roger Enrico. He was a true #leader who could look beyond prejudice and traditional standards. He trusted and empowered his people. We need people like Richard Montañez in our teams, but it is equally important to be leaders like Roger Enrico. Otherwise, all that talent will go to waste. Today marks my last working day in AliveCor. It was exciting to lead the business in #EMEA (and beyond) for more than 5 years now. It’s with a heavy heart to leave, but I’m super excited about what will come up next! I would like to thank the EMEA team, nothing could have been done without you - Sean A Warren, Hans Jaeger, Chris Shelford, Andy Dunhill, Kathrin Peterssen , Sophie Thorne, Syed Aziz. It was great working with all of you - thanks for all the hard work, the friendship and the fun we had! Also I would like to thank Priya Abani and David Albert for the leadership and building this unique company, Sanjay Voleti for his guidance and the great time we had and all the many people in AliveCor that contributed to the success in EMEA over the years! I would also like to thank all our distributors, partners and customers for the trust - I learned a lot from you. And last but not least I would also like to thank Ira Bahr and Vic Gundotra for giving me the opportunity to join in the first place. It’s a small world - we will meet again! Those years were an amazing time - we built an organization from scratch, launched great products (I think you have seen a lot here on LinkedIn), built relationships with many partners and built whole new businesses and services. We expanded our footprint and business drastically. What do I take away from those years? 👉 Success in business is a team sport - get the right people with the right mindset. Hire people you can learn from and there is no such thing of being “overqualified” in a dynamic environment. 👉 Stay open to learn new things every day.  Failing to plan is planning to fail - But any plan is only valid until it faces reality. Road to success is not a straight highway but a steep uphill road with many unforeseen turns. 👉 Therefore resilience is important. We failed often and this was necessary to succeed at the end. Frustration is sometimes part of the job description. Never give up trying new ways.  👉 The consumer business is an interesting play of promotion and seduction - art and science at the same time - that I still don’t fully understand. It’s interesting as it allows fast revenue wins. 👉 B2B business decisions will always take longer than you think and if there is no budget or reimbursement it is a tough sale. 👉 There is a lot of inertia in the way healthcare is delivered and it is hard to change doctors' minds. A product that is adding real value to all main stakeholders is key and the clinical evidence to prove it.  👉 Data privacy and data security are key elements and have to be focused on especially in Europe. The regulatory landscape got far more burdensome and time consuming thanks to MDR. 👉 Europe is not a Union, the devil is in the details and in differences between countries - rules, regulations, languages, reimbursement systems, etc. Now to the beach - See you soon! Or to quote Douglas Adams: “So long and thanks for all the fish”....

I had the (unpleasant) opportunity to test the Austrian healthcare system from the patients side lately (don’t worry, nothing that serious). Here are some observations on the digitization of the Austrian healthcare system: in a nutshell it's none-existing… 🤷‍♂️ There is a total disconnect between office based primary care and hospital / secondary care. The patient has to hand carry handwritten, illegible notes between the institutions. All on paper. 📜 I received a paper binder in primary care full of forms to fill by hand and bring to my surgery (medical history, anesthesia questionnaire, informed consents, etc - all paper). Everyone relied on me as a patient to know prior procedures, underlying disease and medication. 🏥 Also all processes in the hospital were paper based (was a small private institution). My release note of course again printed on dead trees and had to be hand carried back to primary care to get medication prescription (at least the prescription was finally digital). I checked my electronic personal medical record (ELGA), which has been in place in Austria for many years, and - surprise, surprise, almost totally empty (just a lonely MRI report in there). Unbelievable waste of money. So in summary: the system totally relies on the patient and on paper - this is so bad from different angles - quality, efficiency, cost - prone to mistakes. Just thinking how this would ever work with patients that have dementia and no relatives that manage the process properly. The ELGA system (personal electronic medical record) is not used and thus just waste of money. Digitization in healthcare is a big opportunity, but we have a long way to go in Austria……….
