Employees seek leaders who exemplify core values, set clear objectives, and provide continuous support. I believe this topic warrants further exploration and discussion

Every day, we work towards making a real difference for patients and their loved ones, creating change and hope for a healthier future. Some days this feels like a lofty goal, but in recent weeks I have been invigorated to see the progress that our Alliance & Partnership for Patient Innovation and Solution (APPIS) community have made towards realizing that ambition. Last month, the APPIS 2024 Council came together to reflect on the impact of the APPIS Summit 2024 and the ongoing APPISx sessions happening throughout Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa. Not only have we seen a community of people from all areas of healthcare come together to create actionable solutions to issues facing patients throughout the region, but country level initiatives are already forging new partnership and momentum towards addressing local barriers. And it doesn’t stop there, in the coming weeks, our esteemed APPIS Innovator Program expert panel will have the tough task of selecting our 2024 winners from a pool of 49 submissions! Now in its third year, the APPIS Innovator Program will collaborate with the winning patient groups to scale their activities and drive even greater impact for the patients and the communities they serve. Do you know anyone who has faced chronic pain that went unnoticed or untreated due to societal expectations or personal neglect?   For those who have experienced chronic pain, it becomes a constant, unwelcome companion. My own journey with persistent pain began about six months ago after being diagnosed with a frozen shoulder. Recently, I underwent arthroscopic capsule release and shoulder bursitis surgery at Apollo Hospitals, and I'm now on the path to complete recovery.   Frozen shoulder is a condition that made even the simplest tasks feel insurmountable. While undergoing treatment, I realized that chronic pain, especially among women, often goes unnoticed and untreated. Women frequently juggle multiple roles and responsibilities, often side-lining their own health needs. They are expected to have limitless pain tolerance, and complaining about it is viewed as a weakness in many families. https://lnkd.in/gYQsY7fW - as pointed out by Dr. Nikita, conditions like menstrual cramps, migraines, endometriosis, and fibromyalgia can lead to persistent pain that impacts both physical and mental well-being. Despite this, societal norms and personal neglect often delay diagnosis and treatment.   I decided to share my experience because, in the present day, pain management is a vibrant medical discipline with numerous innovations, such as transdermal patches, offering immense hope. It is pivotal that we break the silence surrounding chronic pain and advocate for early intervention and treatment. Why should you care about your reputation? I'm no longer surprised that I still get asked this question. I'm occasionally surprised by who is asking. I have a view on this, as will most in corporate affairs, but I'd be curious to hear whether my take resonates or not. In simple terms your reputation or that of your company is the sum perception your stakeholders have of you. It's the counter point to your brand, which is your self-image - how you see yourself and what you offer to the world. Reputation has in the past been dismissed or discounted as intangible and nebulous. This has meant it was deemed unworthy of time, attention or investment by leadership and boards. While that understanding is evolving I wanted to lay out three fundamental reasons companies should invest in managing this intangible but immensely valuable asset. --------------------------- 1. Your reputation builds trust with people and organisations that can make or break your business. A strong and coherent reputation is like a magnet for trust. All your major stakeholder groups - customers, employees, investors or partners - are more likely to engage with an organisation that they feel they know and that they believe. Trust, once earned, translates into loyalty. Loyalty fosters repeat business. A more productive workforce. Long term contracts. Value creation. ------------------------- 2. Your reputation enhances competitive advantage and secures market position Yes, having incredible products or a truly unique offer gives you a leg up on the competition. So does standing apart from that competition. A distinct reputation gives any organisation an edge. It acts as a differentiator in a crowded market. That difference gives you pricing power. It attracts top tier talent. And it gives you leverage to secure better deals. ------------------------ 3. A solid reputation ensures business growth and success Near-term thinking, catching lightning in a bottle can win you a bump in quarterly results absolutely. Long term reputation management can win you the whole game. That same reputation that helps build trust as a magnet, also acts like a suit of armour when your business has to weather the inevitable storms of the market. It provides protection against market downturns. It offers time and space in the face of disruption. And it gives you the benefit of the doubt in times of crisis and acute organisational risk. ------------------------- Warren Buffett was absolutely correct when he said "it takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it." I think he would agree that it's likely worth more than five minutes of thought to build an asset that could make all the difference.

I know that authenticity is very much a buzzword at the moment. But it really is critical. Think about it. It's the cornerstone of building trust and lasting relationships. Today, where transparency is demanded, and scrutiny is high, your ability to communicate authentically can set you apart. This involves more than just being honest; it’s about aligning your words with your actions consistently. That can be a challenge of itself on occasion. And when it's compounded by the need to maintain authenticity when navigating complex organisational dynamics? It's easy to get caught in corporate jargon and lose that genuine touch. The strongest leaders I've worked with use their humanity to cut through. They share personal stories. They admit and own mistakes. They show some vulnerability and humanise themselves in doing so. 🌍 November is #DiabetesAwarenessMonth, and as I reflect on my 30-year journey with type 1 diabetes, I’m filled with both pride and gratitude. From starting with a single daily injection in my pre-teens. to a regimen with Novorapid and Levemir during my most formative years, and now managing my insulin and blood sugars with the Omnipod pump and Freestyle Libre, it’s been a transformative journey, not just for me but for the world of diabetes management. Living with diabetes means constant attention to patterns, trends, and measurements—a relentless balancing act that can sometimes feel overwhelming. There are days when I genuinely need help to manage it all, and I want to throw my sensors in the bin. But I've learnt that’s okay too. This journey is about understanding that sometimes things just happen. I might eat the exact same thing two days in a row but my blood sugars feel they want to throw a party and be different! It's a personal experience. Always learning and relearning what foods work. And knowing that sometimes I'm allowed to let my guard down and have the foods that I want without worrying about my blood sugars! The biggest thing for me is to NOT ignore my diabetes because it's not going away but to treat my diabetes with care and compassion knowing that my future self will thank my current self for being diligent and disciplined. Alongside managing my own health, I also volunteer with Diabetes UK in the West Midlands to help improve awareness and understanding of diabetes. Through volunteering over the last few years, I’ve really enjoyed the chance to connect and advocate for better understanding of the challenges and resilience it takes to live with this condition. Despite the challenges, I’m still here—staying active, travelling, and celebrating life’s big and small moments. Proud to be type 1 diabetic, and proud to keep going, no matter what. In a long and deep period of change like the one that my family and myself are leaving, knowing what we should be doing is not the same thing as doing it. We don’t have a balance, we navigate in unknown and every day is a new challenge: it is extremely exciting, but we need a strong personal discipline as a regular routine that can reinforce on ourselves ruthlessly. We are using the following list of personal disciplines to stimulate our thinking about routines that we need to develop: 1) plan to prepare to face completely different situations acknowledging that nothing would be as expected 2) focus on important priority and assess what it is really relevant every day 3) recognise when we have to quit, transitions are marathons and not sprints 4) Celebrate quick wins, even if they look like basic things, celebrate, always!
