There is so much to explore in #fintech, with this episode we explored consumer lending and #BNPL landscape in #Pakistan. It’s one of the opportunities even Nadeem Hussain highlighted as one of the low hanging fruit in this market. To understand this better, I spoke to: Arif Lakhani who is the first person that I think of when it comes to this space. He has been doing this long before Qist Bazaar and truly understands how the market has evolved. Naureen Hyat has been working in this sector for almost a decade. She did nano lending with Tez Financial Services, which was acquired by ZOOD (ZOOD Pay | ZOOD Mall), and now she runs its operations in Pakistan. Muddassir Niazi is the head of consumer finance at HBL. I’ve always found him insightful. It is essential to see how the banks look at this to better understand the opportunity. We spoke about credit scoring, defaults, credit cards, data, how banks can work better with fintechs. Link to the full episode in the comments.

    Writing the Realistic Optimist

Central Asia is gaining clout. Especially for logistics startups. Think about it: the flow of goods from China to Europe is massive. But that corridor is sanctioned to the south (Iran) and more recently to the north (Russia). What this means is that more goods are likely to transit via Central Asia. Startups such as CARGON, from Georgia, are tapping that market by digitizing the region's freight-forwarding processes. Logistics is just one area of potential though. The countries making up the region are rapidly digitizing overall. People's purchasing power is increasing. Startups & (few) investors are capitalizing on it. -> Kaspi.kz proved one could scale a publicly-listed tech company from Kazakhstan. -> ZOOD (ZOOD Pay | ZOOD Mall) is rolling out an entire digital lending ecosystem for the region's bank-underserved population. -> PAYZE (YC S21) is building Stripe for the region, growing its online GDP. -> Sturgeon Capital is betting on tech startups in the region, believing that if they fund category winners in virgin digital verticals, they'll hit home runs. -> Local VCs, such as Uzbekistan's AloqaVentures are popping up. -- I write the Realistic Optimist, a paid publication covering the globalized startup scene. It costs €300/year. The Realistic Optimist has interviewed Robin Butler CFA from Sturgeon, Laurent Sciboz from Zood, Gega Tsurtsumia from Payze and Niko Turabelidze from Cargon. If you want to dive deeper into Central Asia's startup scene (among other things), maybe it's worth giving the Realistic Optimist a try.
