Our mission is to inspire, motivate and engage people through education in order to prevent and reduce violence.
Info
The Non-Violence Project Foundation (NVP) is a Swiss-based nonprofit organization, promoting social change through education. NVP was launched in 1993. We have regional offices in Brazil, India, Japan, Mexico, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Uganda, United Kingdom and the USA. Our mission is to inspire, motivate and engage young people to understand how to solve conflicts peacefully. We believe that education is the best weapon against violence. Our strategic approach focuses on two main initiatives: 1. Providing education with Peace programs to young people, teachers, and sports coaches 2. Raising awareness about the work we do. Our symbol is the well-known image of peace and non-violence, the knotted gun. It was created in 1980 by Swedish artist Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd, as a tribute to John Lennon. This unique symbol is featured at more than thirty strategic public locations around the world, including the UN headquarters in New York City, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne and the Peace Park in Beijing. WORLDWIDE RECOGNITIONS - Call to Service Award from US President Barack Obama for our "devotion to shape a better tomorrow for the United States". - Paul Harris Fellow Award" by Rotary International for "NVP's efforts to curb youth violence around the world". - NVP USA has twice received the American Safety Council Award for Best Practice and the Weed and Seed Award.

“Upholding children’s rights is the compass to a better world – today, tomorrow, and into the future.” 💙 This World Children’s Day, let’s celebrate the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its mission to ensure every child is protected, valued, and empowered. From the right to education and play to protection from violence and harm, these rights form the foundation of a peaceful, just world. The Knotted Gun sculpture's version as Imagine by Ringo Starr, a proud Non-Violence ambassador -- stands as a powerful symbol of hope and unity. Just as this piece envisions a world free from violence, the Convention calls on us to build a world where every child can grow up with dignity, safety, and opportunity. Today, let’s imagine and work towards a future where children are not just surviving but thriving, where they are free to dream, create, and lead the way to a brighter tomorrow. #worldchildrensday #childrensrights #nonviolence #imaginepeace #knottedgun

Our work in Brazil is largely focused on education through sport, via a program we call "Football for Peace." Through sports and football, we help the younger generation we work with stay away from trouble by focusing on soccer – instilling how important it is to "love thy neighbour." In our interactions with participants, we teach them 10 different steps to help navigate which reaction to choose and respond with in everyday life scenarios – it’s a program that stands for something and not against something. A large part of this includes working with our local ambassadors and people the children we work with look up to – providing positive mentors and role models for them. An example of this is our work with our ambassador, Deco (former player and now Director of FC Barcelona), and the various events we have hosted with our supporting partner, Santos FC, and up and coming star Neymar Jr. We are so grateful for every partner, ambassador, donor, and individual who has helped us on our journey to a more peaceful Brazil. Together we will take our programs to new heights in the years to come. #NonViolence #education #footballforpeace #Brazil

On October 10, 2024 an intergenerational group of students, youth researchers, scholars, injury scientists, UNICEF representatives, and community engaged groups such as Counseling In Schools, Non-Violence Project USA and Non-Violence Project Global met for a full day to deliberate on the power of the youth voice in injury prevention. Throughout the day we heard the importance of youth scholars in formulating actionable steps to reduce the toll of violence in communities. Firearm violence, the leading cause of death for those 1-24 was a main focus. The incorporation of the youth voice in research is proposed by the Columbia Center on Injury Science & Prevention (CCISP) with the formation of an inaugural Youth Advisory Council. These activities represent a partnership of the CCISP, the New York Academy of Medicine Intergenerational Action Adolescent & Child Team (IAACT) and the amazing leadership of the Heritage School of East Harlem. #nonviolenceproject #nonviolence #youthdevelopment #peaceeducation #socialchange #empowerment
