Matthew Doherty stressed the importance of #standards in enabling action at the “Building trust and scaling action through the international standards system for a just transition” with BSI, University of Oxford , International Accreditation Forum Inc and #IEC at COP29. Trusted, globally agreed standards are crucial for turning climate commitments into measurable actions. Presenting a compelling example of this, he shared the recent work of IEC, and the transformation power of the #IEC’s Global Impact Fund in providing access to reliable electricity for off-grid communities. The urgent need to prioritize #ClimateFinance has never been clearer. We are watching climate change unfold in real time and at the same time, the investment in fossil fuels continues at a rate that outpaces that of renewable energy. There is still a huge #InvestmentGap in #RenewableEnergy. So, where do we start? On #Day4 of COP29 Azerbaijan, IEC, together with FAST-Infra Label, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and UL Standards & Engagement discussed how to equip financial decision-makers with the knowledge needed to invest in renewable energy. What does a 11-year old want to ask world leaders about #ClimateAction? As leaders from across the world gather at #COP29 to assess our global #ClimateGoals, we invited some kids, teenagers and young adults to ask some questions on their minds – and got our experts to answer them! 🔋 Part 2/3🔋 Alice, who’s 11 now wants to know what world leaders are doing so that when she grows up, the world isn’t full of trash? Her question reflects that as kids start learning about how the world around them works, they raise some obvious but often neglected questions. To answer, Celestine Atieno, Project Finance Engineer at Differ Community Power acknowledged our society’s overconsumption and production trends. She explained that while this remains a problem, change can be brought by bringing accountability in the production industry and also the way we consume things - “repair” instead of “replace” is the way to go! This alludes to a transition towards a #CircularEconomy model in which #standards play a vital role. International #IECStandards and conformity assessment for #ecodesign considerations, recyclability, repairability and reusability of products are helping bring these necessary changes. Alice’s question reminds us that the next generation are driving forces for change. Can we come together to make off-grid #energy more #accessible and #efficient? CLASP, RMI and #IEC came together at the #StandardsPavilion at #COP29 to discuss how governments, international bodies and regulators can work together to accelerate meaningful change in the emerging future of energy access. “Standards could be the start of the conversation in the same language to help in building the capacity for local communities and services.” shared Wini Rizkiningayu - Principal, Global South, RMI. A huge thanks to her, Bishal Thapa - Senior Director, CLASP and Vimal Mahendru - IEC Vice-President and Chair of the IEC Systems Committee on Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC) for the insightful conversation and to Matthew Doherty -Senior Advisor and Officer for the IEC Global Impact Fund for moderating the session. His question reflects the curiosity and will to enact equitable change, that so many of his age share.
