Antibiotic access v. excess. That is the paradox facing India and many other low- and middle-income countries today. On the one hand, there are patients who don’t have access to the right antibiotic at the right time. On the other hand, some antibiotics are too readily available, even over the counter, particularly in urban areas. “At the end of the day, I think what is most important is that restricted access should not lead to harm to the patient,” said Kamini Walia of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Delhi. With this challenge, Dr Walia kicked off a one-day event hosted by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and GARDP on strengthening appropriate antibiotic access in India, which took place in New Delhi on 19 November. Thanks to our speakers and participants for this important discussion. GARDP is honoured to have hosted this event with ICMR, and we look forward to ongoing collaboration with our Indian partners. #AMR #India #AntibioticAccess #AntibioticResistance

Putting public health needs at the centre of antibiotic drug development to address the crisis of AMR
Info
The Global Antibiotic Research & Development Partnership (GARDP) is a not-for-profit organization that develops new antibiotic treatments for drug-resistant bacterial infections that pose the greatest threat to human health, and makes them accessible to the people who need them. It puts public health needs at the centre of antibiotic drug development to address both the immediate antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis and to ensure people continue to get access to essential antibiotics for generations to come. GARDP works through a global network including Brazil, India, Japan, and South Africa for antibiotic development and access. Its work is made possible by essential funding from donors and collaboration with over 100 R&D and access partners in over 20 countries. GARDP was created by the World Health Organization and the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) in 2016 and legally registered as the GARDP Foundation in Geneva, Switzerland in 2018. www.gardp.org

Recently our Associate Director for Medical Sciences, Alison Luckey participated in the Shionogi Europe scientific symposium on "Global Best Practices and Chances for Germany" “Antibiotic resistance claims 4.95 million lives every year. Our ability to treat infections and safeguard modern healthcare advances is at stake. GARDP is committed to ensuring a future where antibiotics remain accessible and effective.” Alison Luckey FFPM Read more about the event: https://lnkd.in/dxQQZ-Ca #AMR #AntibioticResistance #ScientificSymposium

Researchers and site teams in South Africa and India have gathered in Cape Town and New Delhi respectively, to discuss the initial results of GARDP’s observational study on the management of antibiotic-resistant infections in hospitals. Data was collected and analyzed from patients being treated for infections caused by carbapenem-resistant organisms across five hospitals in India and five hospitals in South Africa. We are very grateful to our excellent site teams in both countries. The information gleaned from the study could ultimately help to improve treatments for hospital-acquired infections, which are among the deadliest of antibiotic-resistant infections. GARDP’s Executive Director, Dr Manica Balasegaram, recently spoke to The Economic Times about a double challenge driving antimicrobial resistance (AMR). "AMR has been haunted by a spectre of market and public health failure," he told the publication. A decline in research and development for new treatments has left the global community vulnerable. However, economies like India, with a strong track record in production and supply, offer critical opportunities to accelerate innovation and improve access. Childhood access to vaccines has saved more than 150 million lives - an incredible achievement in global health. But the fight to reduce infant mortality, especially in developing countries, is far from over. Newborns account for half of all deaths among children under five each year, with many caused by infections. To tackle this, the international community must ensure that safe and effective antibiotics are available for pediatric use. World AMR Awareness Week 2024: Act Now! As #WAAW comes to an end, GARDP calls on everyone - in healthcare, industry, leadership, and communities - to take action against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This year’s global commitments are a foundation; now, it’s time to turn them into concrete action. At GARDP we are putting public health needs at the centre of antibiotic drug development, by enabling the right antibiotic treatments to be developed and made available to people who need them. What can you do? From supporting stewardship to educating on responsible use, every action counts. Together let's make AMR a priority! #ActNow #WAAW2024 #AMRAwareness #GlobalHealth #AMR #AntibioticResistance

World AMR Awareness Week: Advocate for Action! At GARDP we know that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) knows no borders, affecting anyone, anywhere. Real-life stories from survivors, doctors or advocates are a powerful reminder of the human impact of AMR. Together we must push for bold policies, increased innovation in research and development, and global collaboration to ensure accessible and effective treatments for all. This #WAAW, join us in advocating for urgent, coordinated action to ensure a healthier tomorrow. #Advocate #WAAW2024 #AMRAwareness #GlobalHealth #AMR #AntibioticResistance

On World Children's Day we are reminded of the importance of prioritizing children's health. AMR places our youngest at high risk of serious bacterial infections, especially in low- and middle-income countries where the lack of access to effective treatments is a reality. At GARDP, we are listening to the needs of future generations by focusing on public health-driven R&D and advocating for equitable access to lifesaving and essential antibiotic treatments. “Public health-driven R&D and access is what we need, not just for antibiotics but for all conditions that affect children.” Dr Manica Balasegaram We believe that together, we can help children not only survive but thrive. World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) is here! This year's theme is a call to Educate, Advocate and Act now to address the urgent global health crisis of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Education is our first line of defense, and at GARDP, we're committed to raising awareness about the dangers of AMR and the actions that can be taken to prevent and tackle it. This WAAW, let’s commit to deepening our understanding of AMR and sharing this knowledge within our communities. Together, we can prevent the misuse of antibiotics and preserve their effectiveness for future generations. #Educate #WAAW2024 #AntibioticAwareness #GlobalHealth #AMR #WAAW
