There are over 15 tech (or VC backed) companies in the Middle East & North Africa that are doing over $100 million in annual revenue (or run rate). This list only includes companies with publicly available financial data (in some form) or where I have been able to confirm. There may be other companies generating $100 million or more in revenue, but their numbers haven't been disclosed. Delivery Hero MENA (not an independent company) did nearly $3 billion last year. These numbers also include Turkey. Jahez did $475 million in 2023. Halan should've done a little over $400 million in 2023. Its founders claim that it should close 2024 with $500 to $600 million. Kitopi did over $330 million* in 2023. STC Pay did $283 million in 2023. Careem Technologies (the spinoff majority acquired by e&) should have an annual run rate of nearly $200 million. Maxab does $200 million+. Tasheel (which is currently part of eXtra but is going public soon) did $140 million in 2023. Unifonic, Tabby, Floward, Mrsool, Trukker, and Nana should have an annual run rate between $140 million to $220 million. At least three of these companies should have a run rate of over $200 million. Property Finder did over $100 million in 2023.* Breadfast has an annual run rate of over $100 million. Kavak MENA also has an annual run rate of $100 million+. Salla also does over $100 million. Haven't been able to confirm this though. Even if they're not there yet, they're super close.* The numbers for Tamara and Dubizzle Group (formerly EMPG) are not public, but it's likely that they are also doing over $100 million annually. Fawry was also doing $100 million+ but with the recent devaluation of EGP, it is no longer there. Rasan and Foodics should also get there within 12-24 months. Eyewa and Calo are also super close. (Jumia North Africa was at ~$77 million in 2023. Noon and Amazon MENA, however, should be easily beyond the $100 million number). It is important to remember here that not all revenue is created equal. This obv. applies not only when comparing different companies but also the different revenue streams of a single company. A quick example to explain this further. Jahez made four times the revenue of Tasheel, but its (net) profits were just over half of what Tasheel made. Jahez operates with a 23 percent gross margin, compared to Tasheel's 88 percent margin. In other words, for every $10 in revenue, Jahez made $2.3 in gross profit, and Tasheel made $8.8. Most of the companies I've listed here are private so we have no visibility on their financials, revenue mix, or (in most cases) even growth rates. So make what you want of this. But to get a good read on a company's performance, you might want to wait a year or two, as many here that aren't listed are set to go public soon. A quick insight: Ten of these companies are headquartered in Saudi. Three each in Egypt & UAE. One final (and obv.) thought: long Saudi. *Updated.

Initially, Shopify struggled to raise VC because of 1 misunderstood metric. Today its market cap is $86.5B. 😳 Investors evaluating Shopify were stuck on the fact there were already 10,000 e-commerce merchants, causing concern around TAM. But if you don't get TAM right, you won’t be able to calculate slope, which is what you’re supposed to be investing in anyway. You need to answer two questions to get that evaluation right: → Is this a trend that’s going to continue to grow significantly? → Is this a company that’s capable of catalyzing that growth? If investors had answered the above, they would have seen that the addressable market was likely to grow exponentially—and that Shopify was going to be the primary enabler of that growth. In theory, investors get it. But in practice, it's actually very hard to invest in because you have to be able to understand the dynamics of why that increase will happen. One indicator is the rate and quality of progression in a product’s service, particularly if you're a user of a similar product. AI is a great illustration of how this is happening right now. Its progression rate is astonishing. If a service provider's service is getting better over time, you should invest in it with the assumption that it’s progressing exponentially. That's why I'm bullish on Notion right now. The way they've implemented AI indicates that as AI improves, Notion will accrue increasing benefits. Take their recent announcement that inside Notion, users can call on their other apps for information, reinforcing themselves as the front page of where you do work, making it your OS. There have been eighteen $100 million startup exits in the Middle East & North Africa. But just one-third of them had VCs from the region on their cap table. The main reason is perhaps that the VC ecosystem was almost nonexistent when these companies sought funding, assuming they raised any money at all. From the six that raised money from VCs and went on to sell their businesses (or list on stock exchanges) for over $100 million, three were able to produce venture returns for the investors. ➝ Careem: Beco, Endure, Wamda, Arzan, STC Ventures, STV ➝ Jahez: Impact46 ➝ Rasan: Impact 46 Two haven't been able to do well on the public markets yet and currently have a market cap below $100 million. ➝ Anghami: MEVP, MBC Ventures, Mobily Ventures ➝ Swvl: Beco, Silicon Badia, Arzan, Raed, OTF, Sawari, Dash The exact financial details of the last one are not known so it's difficult to assess if it produced venture returns for the investor. ➝ Expensya: Silicon Badia This stat is obv. not an indicator of the performance of VC as an asset class in the region but it is still very interesting. The regional funds also invest in international startups sometimes and they're not part of these numbers. What's also interesting is that 12 of the 18 startups that created $100 million exits did so without any help from the VCs. Some of them did raise money from the region but that did not come from VC funds. Jawaker, for example, raised from twofour54. InstaShop from Jabbar. The Entertainer from Abraaj. Another interesting insight here is that most of these exits did not help their employees create wealth. Careem is perhaps the only notable large exit where that happened. More on that in a future post. (P.S. The Chefz $173 million acquisition by Jahez is not part of these numbers as it hasn't been closed so far).

To founders in Egypt and other emerging markets: DO NOT RAISE CAPITAL!! In my 12 years in this ecosystem, I've found founders losing hope and closing their startups because they didn't raise capital. It seems reasonable, right? Think of a great idea, and raise capital to build it. It could be a human instinct that someone would manage the project and one would fund it. Should I blame the school system? 🙄 This is only right in the business of moving money, not making money. As in, VCs moving money from LPs to founders who are making money. In the business of making money (being a founder), a founder has to make money. Then investors will find that it works and they would want to have their share. In emerging markets, it is so much harder to get funded with an idea. In emerging markets, investors do not have the same risk appetite. They do not want to invest in your super app that will change the lives of 490 million people in the MENA region 🤑 As a founder, I made the same mistake, I pursued funding because I only saw the successful startups raising money and making headlines. I didn't hear a thing about the startups that generated revenue and traction, because this doesn't make headlines. So, in my mind, I was like "I have to raise capital to be successful". And this is a deathtrap for founders in emerging markets. Last month, I learned from 3 different founders in Cairo that they had to shut down because they were not successful in raising rounds of funding. One of them is doing something right though. Can you guess what is it? they're pivoting and planning to have customers before any conversations with investors. This is a picture of me and my co-founder back in the day pitching to Egypt's version of Dragon Den. We had customers, we won grants and competitions, and we received term sheets. But still, we closed down. Because we focused on the wrong thing: Funding. Important fact about most startup (and VC) success stories. It is convenient to overlook this, but the best companies and products are not built on any specific timeline. The best people win, and that is the only thing that has consistently and repeatably truly won over the test of time.

Thanks for the call out Deedy Das! Appreciate the post! 🙏 I recently brought on a world class CEO Coach Matt Mochary. He also coaches Sam Altman, Brian Armstrong, Steve Huffman and many others. As I dissected this with him - he advised that VCs invest using the relationship method (investing in companies where there is a built up trusting friendly relationship) and the company profile ends up being secondary. While of course it is still important to have good metrics to close the deal - without the relationship VCs can and will find any excuse/reason/number NOT to invest. I know this to be true because every single round we have raised (we have raised $150M+) has been built on existing relationships. Our investors have been amazing and incredibly supportive - Bee Partners, Lightbank, Inovia Capital, Lion Capital, Acrew Capital, Titanium Ventures, Harley Finkelstein, Stephen Curry, Penny Jar Capital, Full In Partners, BDC, Hyphen Capital... However 2 things are different: 1 - While Henry Shi is now in SF and I spend a lot of time out there - I still live in Toronto and about half our company is here in Canada. Nothing compares to living in SF and naturally building relationships there. 2 - We did not start the company going up the 'standard' silicon valley path. Going through Y Combinator means you are in the inner circle to get picked up by Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Accel, Kleiner Perkins, Benchmark and so on... as there are strong relationships already built there. All this being said - it doesn't really matter 😀 While we may not be well known in the Silicon Valley echo chamber - we are helping millions of customers save, earn, build their credit score, and experience more of what life has to offer. We are growing fast, profitable, and will get to a great outcome! It just may take us a bit longer. :) 💪

Founders: how are you currently converting your currency? I love our Canadian banks, don’t get me wrong, but they take a massive bite out of your profits when it comes to foreign exchange. DO NOT TRADE CURRENCY WITH YOUR BANKS. Sorry to all my bankers reading this!
