Aceocial and Google Cloud are hosting a Demos Only event at Toronto Tech Fest on May 23rd from 3-6pm where you can showcase what you've built to the world! 💥 Two years after Tim Horton’s settled a class action in Canada for sharing location data through its use of the Radar SDK in its app… 💥…And two years after Greenley vs. Kochava claimed the Kochava SDK intercepts consumers’ location data when using mobile apps 💥…Bender vs. Twilio claims the Segment SDK collects personal information in a similar fashion. Are class action plaintiffs taking up the cause of SDK liability? Or are these flukes? In Bender vs. Twilio, Noah Bender downloaded and used the Calm meditation app on his cell phone. He later claimed the Segment SDK intercepted sensitive communications between himself and Calm. Segment is designed for developers to collect data , including search terms, search results, keystrokes, button presses, page views, and consumers’ names and email addresses. Bender is suing Twilio for violating America's Wiretap Act, the California Wiretap Act, and California's Comprehensive Computer Data Access and Fraud Act (CDAFA). This may be the Calm before the storm for class actions. Bender's complaint alleges over 11,000 app developers have integrated Segment into apps for shopping, productivity, gaming, and mental health. Here’s what I see. I see companies like Workato and TRAY.IO INC. being sold as integration middlemen because custom integration is so wildly expensive. The top brass is being told that custom will cost a $ million and 8 months, or the middlemen will only cost $500k and 4 months and they jump on a bad comparison because the numbers are so high. Squillo‘s micro-middleware is better, faster, cheaper and actually works. Time to start putting the 🪓 to the middle.

A lot of Canadian founders are getting robbed. Yup, you read that right. If you’re a founder that: 1️⃣ Generates revenue in USD 2️⃣ Or, has raised USD funds and if you’re operating in Canada, chances are you need to convert some of those USD funds to CAD to pay your operating expenses or if you’re lucky, maybe you have a cash balance that you want to put away in a GIC for some nice interest. Founders: how are you currently converting your currency? I love our Canadian banks, don’t get me wrong, but they take a massive bite out of your profits when it comes to foreign exchange. DO NOT TRADE CURRENCY WITH YOUR BANKS. Sorry to all my bankers reading this! I know so many founders who learned this lesson the hard way and hopefully this post will save a few of you from making that mistake. Moral of the story? Go find yourself an awesome FX trader. Of course, happy to introduce you to ours (no benefit to us, I just want to help our start-up ecosystem in Canada WIN!)

Ever built a house from scratch? It can be expensive, especially if you’re customizing a bunch of stuff. You know what else? A LOT can go wrong. Contractors don’t show up.  You didn’t get the right permits.  Things cost way more than you thought. You mistakenly built on a potential sinkhole.  Oh… and you didn’t know your neighbors are a$&holes. Now, some of those things can also occur when you BUY a house, but at least you’re looking at something that’s been standing already and has somewhat of a reputation. The same is true with technology. There can be benefits of building from scratch—like the ability to fully customize to your unique needs and desires. That obviously requires money and time, so if you have it to spare, it’s something to think about. Not everyone should just think about buying what they need, either, because that approach poses some challenges as well. Yet, in my experience, companies that buy as much as they can and build where they need to are the most successful and scale the fastest. The trick is buying the RIGHT tech; tools that are standardized in the market but CAN be customized… Like a home remodel. Now to the real question… Have you ever encountered a nightmare scenario in building (or remodeling) a house? Give me all the horrific details.

Recently, someone asked me for advice about hiring their first engineer. It depends on the industry, of course. My advice is - don’t hire a Shopify developer. Hire an engineer. A good engineer can learn APIs, a new language, or whatever they need to, rather than the other way around. Look for a breadth of projects, but dive deep into one or two projects they’ve done. You need to know how passionate they are about their job. My favorite question to ask is, “Tell me about a project that you’re most proud of.” What is your favorite question to ask when hiring someone?

I recently shared this “competition” slide with investors. With Canopy, we’ve reimagined how backend software development can become simple and remain powerful. This was a promise of legacy iPaaS companies, but they quit innovating and caring about the developer experience. (No dev likes using the legacy platforms!) Canopy can become the iPaaS for the era of AI & real-time data!

X is the new aa? Baffled? When I first started ebdex back in 2004, we were one of the very first group of companies to build a SaaS product. In my case, tried to build is more accurate than anything else as I failed miserably. Then everyone started adding as-a (aa) to every damn business type/model. The x story started with - User Experience (UX) and then extended to - Customer Experience (CX) Today I got an email about EX. Guess what it might be? By the way, SaaS is always lower aa and not AA. There's a fallacy amongst engineers that if you just build a great product, people will flock to it. You realize how untrue this is after launching your first product as a founder. Coming off the heels of our Forever Links launch, this is resonating deeply:  I now realize there's a reason why marketing and sales end up being half of an org over time: knowing how to talk about your product and grab a customer's attention is insanely difficult. The product might be awesome, but if nobody knows about it, how to use it, and aren't convinced that there's value such that they even try, then it doesn't matter how awesome your product is. This means a lot to us in the present: right now we rely on our account management team to educate our customers. But there are too many features on the horizon for one team to handle the outreach without structure. Our Forever Links launch helped us build our muscles by talking about our products, making sure we have distribution, and connecting with people in a way that showcases value. And I'm so excited we're finally doing this on a feature level for FERMÀT. More announcements to come soon.

Important fact about most startup (and VC) success stories. It is convenient to overlook this, but the best companies and products are not built on any specific timeline. The best people win, and that is the only thing that has consistently and repeatably truly won over the test of time.
