Career fairs are great events that provide opportunities to connect in-person with potential employers and learn about different companies that you might want to work for. I really like OFE - Opportunities for Employment's recommendations for a step-by-step approach to career fair success which I have shared below. 1) Research, Research, Research Investigate beforehand the companies who will be attending the Career Fair. Do your homework and research online to learn about the mission, values, and recent achievements of those companies you are interested in working for. 2) Map out your Day Get the map of the exhibitor hall and plan your route. Prioritize the companies you want to visit. Aim for quality interactions over quantity. It is better to target your efforts on your top ten employers, than hand out a resume to every booth. 3) Your Personal Pitch Know what type of job you are looking for and be prepared to answer questions. Practice your “Personal Pitch” and know exactly what you want to tell employers about yourself. In less than 30 seconds, you need to highlight your relevant skills, experience and training for the job. Practice with a friend or in front of a mirror. 4) First Impressions Matter Dress as though you are going to an interview. Be ready, you may be interviewed on the spot. Present yourself confidently, making eye contact and extending a firm hand shake. Ensure your resume is updated and professional-looking and bring multiple copies. 5) Question Time Compile a list of appropriate questions. Do not ask about compensation, company benefits, pensions or preferred work hours. Instead, ask questions about the position or company and stay focused on how you can contribute to the company’s success. 6) Have a Follow-Up Strategy Request the person’s business card or LinkedIn profile. After the fair, send a thank-you message and ask for an opportunity to meet with the employer to discuss possible employment. Being prepared and making a positive first impression will help you stand out from other job seekers at a career fair. Good Luck! Canada Child Benefit Boost: Increased Payments Arrive This Friday This Friday, Canadian families will receive the latest installment of the Canada Child Benefit (CCB), a federal initiative designed to support low and middle-income families with the rising costs of child-rearing. Eligible for this non-taxable monthly payment are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or refugees who are primary caregivers of children under 18. Introduced in 2016, the amount each family receives depends on their net income and the number of children they have. Families earning less than $34,863 annually qualify for the maximum benefit, which provides up to $7,437 per child under six and $6,275 for children aged six to 17 each year. This translates to monthly payments of up to $619.75 and $522.91, respectively. Adjusted annually every July for inflation, the benefit saw a 6.3% increase this year. Applications can be submitted online, by mail, or through a child’s birth registration. Gig work - temporary or freelance work performed on an informal or on-demand basis – has become a vital part of many Canadians' financial strategies to cover expenses. In this month's Happiness@Work Index, 31% of workers in Canada indicated they rely, at least at times, on gig work to help afford expenses, such as daily living costs and bills. Of those, 17% cited that they primarily rely on gig work to support daily costs and bills. The gig economy is becoming a crucial lifeline for those looking to cover their expenses.
