She has taken part in more than one trip to China and has seen firsthand the difference Canadian #LNG could make to both air quality and energy security. It's encouraging to see more and more leaders recognize and talk about energy realities. The "energy trilemma" - energy that's reliable, sustainable and affordable - was a rather novel concept when introduced by Simon Todd in our 21st Century Energy Transitions course a couple of years ago, but its importance is becoming more widely recognized. Whatever our long-term energy solutions might be, we have to respect all three aspects of the energy trilemma today - and every day - if people are to survive and prosper. Even hydroelectricity-rich British Columbia must have natural gas as an important component of its energy supply - and that's not going to change anytime soon, despite poorly-conceived policy by some politicians. All Genesee units are now 100% fueled by natural gas! The province has transitioned from 80% coal power to zero, achieving this milestone years ahead of schedule. This week, Capital Power successfully transitioned the Genesee 2 facility from coal to #naturalgas, marking the end of coal plants in Alberta. TC Energy has entered an agreement with an Indigenous-owned investment partnership to sell a 5.34% equity interest in its NGTL System and Foothills Pipeline assets for $1 billion, resulting in an implied enterprise value of $1.65 billion. This historic partnership enables up to 72 Indigenous Communities in Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan to become equity owners in a 25,000-kilometre natural gas infrastructure network, providing access to long-term revenue sources and fostering economic sovereignty. “Indigenous ownership is the path to a more prosperous nation. Today’s federal government announcement on the publication of draft emissions cap regulations is very disappointing. This is the wrong policy approach and bad timing. At first glance, this is not a practical climate solution that will reduce emissions and grow Canada’s economy. Layering a new cap-and-trade system on top of the existing complex web of fed/prov carbon policies will add uncertainty and regulatory complexity. If implemented, this will hurt Canada’s economy.

Busy last week chatting with folks about Clean Energy Canada's new scorecard evaluating Canadian provinces' work in the #energytransition. Bottom line- Since 2016, 80% of climate spending in Canada has been at the federal level, despite the fact that the federal government is responsible for roughly 20% of all public spending. Pretty much all provinces have work to do to better serve the people and businesses in their provinces in this time of change and emerging economic opportunities- but the leaders and laggards don't always fall along party lines. Did you know that Eastward Energy can start blending 5% hydrogen into Halifax's natural gas grid as early as 2026? According to AllNovaScotia, approval comes under Nova Scotia's Technical Safety Act. The change will help the utility reduce the carbon intensity of the natural gas it supplies.
