Here's my latest column with Jock Finlayson in the Globe and Mail: "To sustain our standard of living, Canada sells exports in international markets. Exports generate jobs and earnings that circulate through the non-export economy. They provide the means to pay for the vast array of imports that consumers want and need, from cars to clothing to high-end electronics. Companies also import essential parts and inputs for their operations. The mix of goods and services that any market economy sells abroad ultimately reflects the activities where it has a “comparative advantage.” This principle boils down to a country being better off by “playing to its strengths” rather than trying to be a “jack of all trades.” Countries benefit the most from international trade when they specialize in exporting goods and services they can produce at a lower cost and/or higher quality relative to other countries. An analogy would be that a wonderful doctor is better off focusing on treating patients and buying (importing) their food from a skilled farmer rather than dividing her time between being a doctor and growing her own food. Natural resource-based goods play an outsized role in our export portfolio. Added together, energy, non-metallic minerals and related products, metal ores, forest products and agri-food make up roughly half of all exports. Along with aerospace, these are the only broad categories where Canada posts trade surpluses. In its latest “scorecard” report, the Coalition for a Better Future observes that “over the past decade, Canada recorded a cumulative trade deficit of $130-billion. Had it not been for energy, our trade deficit would have been about $1-trillion.”"

Great piece here on the work of Karen Ogen of the First Nations LNG Alliance. She has taken part in more than one trip to China and has seen firsthand the difference Canadian #LNG could make to both air quality and energy security. Despite high levels of investment in various forms of energy, China is still majority dependent on coal for its electricity generation. Canadians just paid $34 billion for TMX that has resulted in: ❌ 🛢️that does not meet spec at new ports ❌ differentials that have INCREASED due to poorer quality ❌ no buyer that won’t be #redwashing ❌ increased liabilities, yet understood Despite over 20 years of studies and evidence that the operations are toxic to residents, wildlife, and habitats the oil sand liabilities have accumulated to: ❌ $130 billion ❌ 105,000 🏈 fields of disturbance ❌ 1.6 trillion liters of waste 💦 ❌ 6300% understated emissions If the Government of Canada kicks this can down the road for 10 MORE YEARS, this national disaster will be: ❌ ~$400 billion (12.5% increase/year) ❌ 125,000 🏈 fields of disturbance (could be way more if Suncor is allowed to develop McClelland). ❌ 3 trillion liters of waste 💦 (assuming current rate of 200 billion/year) ❌ 🇨🇦 will be responsible for breaking the earth’s planetary system, its warming will move us to beyond a point of no return. This $12 million solution from the Feds is disgusting. Instead, Canada needs to: ✅ halt any new mining, drilling, and freshwater use ✅ require the Pathways Alliance to stand up 2050 clean up plans, make them prove they can and will clean up this mess. There are solutions available. ✅ clean up tailings and begin Indigenous led restoration of the Athabasca system ✅ make the polluter pay today, trigger the MFSP and secure financing The future of the oil sands in carbon materials AFTER we achieve socioecological stability. It’s clean up and sit in the penalty box for 25 years. Canada, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, is trying to achieve some of the world’s most ambitious emissions-reduction targets while also boosting oil production in an industry that is already the world’s fourth-largest. The #energytransition might have launched the public discussion about #criticalminerals, but it will be #nationalsecurity concerns that inject some urgency to act. Canada has the reserves of #nickel #copper #cobalt #lithium and #graphite to be a global #mining powerhouse - but we don’t today produce enough to fill our refineries, let alone to refine more minerals for the incoming #EV factories nor to supply our friends and allies around the world to protect their environments, their economies and their borders. That may change - quickly. And government policy to inject capital to extract, process and recycle critical minerals may become urgent. Where is the evidence to support this claim? Or is a meme sufficient evidence these days for Canada to spend billions subsidizing an industry already worrying about oversupply later this decade? Not to mention peak global gas demand by 2030ish.

Busy last week chatting with folks about Clean Energy Canada's new scorecard evaluating Canadian provinces' work in the #energytransition. Bottom line- Since 2016, 80% of climate spending in Canada has been at the federal level, despite the fact that the federal government is responsible for roughly 20% of all public spending. Pretty much all provinces have work to do to better serve the people and businesses in their provinces in this time of change and emerging economic opportunities- but the leaders and laggards don't always fall along party lines. Loadings from the newly expanded Trans Mountain pipeline are being closely watched amid questions about oil quality, pipeline economics and loading challenges. The loadings have the potential to change global oil flows and closer home, impacts Canadian government's prospects to sell the $24.84 billion (C$34 billion) line. Reuters counted 20 ships that loaded crude oil on Canada's West Coast in June - the first full month of operation, slightly below the operator's 22 forecast. While just shy of estimates, analysts say it was a strong start to operations. We raised exactly this issue Svante cites on the CleanTech North webinar last night that focused on the CCUS Tax Credit. While we did not cover the Manufacturing tax credit we did dip into the lunacy that the most beneficial of the green economy tax credits (CCUS at up to 60%) does not have a matching Manufacturing tax credit (unlike, say, energy generation or storage) to support the CANADIAN SUPPLY CHAIN for that technology! This may be oversight, but announcements that are not delivered on or calibrated/revised for months lead to uncertainty… and business hates uncertainty; there is enough of it in the high risk tech scaleup world. This gap MUST be closed immediately and CleanTech North will continue to advocate for that. Hopefully before we lose all our rising stars in #CCUS like Claude Letourneau, ICD.D and Svante…

Canada updates its #criticalminerals list with three new additions, bringing the new total to 34. The list is important to prioritize development and processing of the minerals and materials that are essential to our #energysecurity and #energytransformation. Canada has one of the most robust methodologies to assess these critical minerals - evaluating both supply availability and economic importance on a forward-looking basis. It is a model for the world and should - with the US list - help to refine the assessment for critical minerals in the #UK and #EU. Alignment among our friends, allies and trade partners will be even more essential in the years ahead to attract capital investment and accelerate responsible mining to protect our economies, environment and borders. GLJ Ltd. has released its Q3 Pricing Update. Investment optimism in the Canadian energy sector appears to be rallying around imminent completion of new ex-basin pipelines, and the growing realization that the demand for energy encompasses all energy, petroleum and new low carbon sources. Demand growth for petroleum products worldwide appears relentless. The current oil price lives in the happy space where producers are very profitable, and consumers feel they still get value. Natural gas, less so. GLJ has made no significant changes to its long-term expected nominal oil and gas prices for key benchmarks. This implies no change in our long-term real oil price to USD $74.00/bbl in 2024 dollars for WTI. We have maintained our long-term real price of Henry Hub to $4.00/mmbtu in 2024 dollars.
