The Canada Electricity Advisory Council (CEAC) has shared their final report, Powering Canada: A Blueprint for Success. The report shares 28 recommendations that will support Canada's decarbonization goals. This report is shared following 87 meetings of the Council, hearing from 117 stakeholders, and achieving full consensus on all recommendations. Some recommendations of interest include: ◾ Policy clarity now and in the future. ◾ Clarifying Indigenous consultation and engagement. ◾ Support for Indigenous, northern, and remote communities. ◾ Targeted support for low-income Canadians. 100% concur with Diego Mandelbaum on this issue. A recurring problem is that policy makers have a blind spot on thermal energy. They wrongly assume that electricity policy is energy policy and vice versa. This myopia results not only in higher consumer costs but inferior capital deployment and deleterious environmental outcomes. We need to break the fever of “electrify everything” through ardent advocacy and education.

Today we are releasing our latest labour market intelligence report, Electricity in Demand: Alberta Workforce 2023-2028. The Report is the result of a study, undertaken by EHRC and funded by the Government of Alberta, that examines the impacts of evolving economic, technological, regulatory and environmental developments on the province’s electricity sector, and determines their likely labour market implications. The report proposes a multi-faceted strategy for human resources practitioners, postsecondary institutions, policymakers and other stakeholders involved in the electricity sector, to address challenges brought about by changing labour market conditions. The report’s recommendations primarily involve the attraction, recruitment and retention of employees; succession planning; academic programming; and measures to increase the efficiency of labour market planning and management. “Ensuring a resilient and adaptive workforce demands that employers, educators, regulatory authorities, and policymakers can effectively mitigate the evolving effects of human resources challenges through access to in-depth research. This report will help all stakeholders implement targeted actions to support and grow the industry over the years ahead,” says Michelle Branigan, CEO, EHRC. Here's my latest column with Jock Finlayson in the Globe and Mail: "To sustain our standard of living, Canada sells exports in international markets. Exports generate jobs and earnings that circulate through the non-export economy. They provide the means to pay for the vast array of imports that consumers want and need, from cars to clothing to high-end electronics. Companies also import essential parts and inputs for their operations. The mix of goods and services that any market economy sells abroad ultimately reflects the activities where it has a “comparative advantage.” This principle boils down to a country being better off by “playing to its strengths” rather than trying to be a “jack of all trades.” Countries benefit the most from international trade when they specialize in exporting goods and services they can produce at a lower cost and/or higher quality relative to other countries. An analogy would be that a wonderful doctor is better off focusing on treating patients and buying (importing) their food from a skilled farmer rather than dividing her time between being a doctor and growing her own food. Natural resource-based goods play an outsized role in our export portfolio. Added together, energy, non-metallic minerals and related products, metal ores, forest products and agri-food make up roughly half of all exports. Along with aerospace, these are the only broad categories where Canada posts trade surpluses. In its latest “scorecard” report, the Coalition for a Better Future observes that “over the past decade, Canada recorded a cumulative trade deficit of $130-billion. Had it not been for energy, our trade deficit would have been about $1-trillion.”"
