ONTARIO’s ECONOMY IS LANGUISHING- This comes as a surprise to me and perhaps to you. Over the last two decades, growth in Ontario is the lowest of all provinces. But, Ontario has: a) the lion’s share of head offices of major Canadian companies, with many highly paid jobs b) large tech hubs in the GTA, Kitchener/Waterloo and Ottawa c) a vibrant and growing mining industry. We do know manufacturing, especially in the auto industry has declined dramatically. So here’s a question to the economists; WHY IS ONTARIO’s GROWTH LAGGING?

Canadian #universal #healthcare system is facing a lot of challenges and complaints regarding real access to it. Privatization is promoted as one of the solutions… “Earnings, revenue, acquisitions—Canadians have historically been uncomfortable with financials muddying up our universal health-care system, which, in spirit, bases access to care on need rather than the ability to pay. But with average wait times reaching 27.4 weeks in 2022—the highest among a group of 30 countries with universal health care—the great public-private care debate has never had so much fuel. According to a 2023 Angus Reid poll, 33 per cent of Canadians are “curious but hesitant” about privatization. Some new private solutions have already crept in: earlier this year, the Ford government in Ontario introduced plans to offload some public care—MRIs, cataract surgeries, hip and knee replacements—to more private clinics, including MyHealth clinics owned by Well Health.” Does privatization on its own can increase the number of family doctors and nurses? I can understand if the universal health-care system will remain without any further cut from list of “universal services”. In such a case patients with money can choose to wait for their appointment or to go to the private clinic for urgent help.

TRAITOR MPs? An excellent article by Andrew Coyne of The Globe and Mail. Here’s the dilemma; is it fair to disclose the names of those who MAY have, wittingly or unwittingly, leaked confidential government business to foreign representatives and may have even been payed for their transgressions? The reputation and career of whomever is named would be ruined whether they are guilty or not. I don’t think this is the preferred approach. What is needed is for the Prime Minister to direct the RCMP to immediately review and investigate each of these allegations and arrange for the guilty parties to be prosecuted. Given that for the last nine years, the Liberals have held a majority or a coalition majority with the NDP, it is more likely that some Liberals are guilty. It follows that the PM may be less inclined to take the necessary actions. If he doesn’t, it will be incumbent on the NDP to insist that the PM presure the RCMP to investigate immediately and thoroughly, or bring down the government as soon as possible.

One of the biggest issues in my mailbox is constituents' concerns that the government is attempting to restrict distribution of Health Canada approved natural health products. My colleague, MP Blaine Calkins, has presented a Private Members Bill to ensure Canadians retain access to affordable natural health products. This bill passed Second Reading this week and will now go to Committee, so we are one step closer to protecting consumer choice. Existing regulations on health supplements already keep Canadians safe. New red tape would add costly changes on many small and medium sized producers, and could push struggling businesses over the edge, destroying jobs and giving consumers less choice. CANADA’S FALLING PRODUCTIVITY Attached is an excellent article by Mark Wiseman. It is more balanced than many recent articles/papers on the subject of productivity, assigning responsility more widely. Some key observations: * our productivity is quickly falling in relation to our peers * there is a lack of competition in our economy * as a result of the last point point, corporations have not been pressed to be innovative and efficient. Some suggested steps: * eliminate inter-provincial trade barriers * encourage more foreign entrants by replacing the Competition Act test to prove a transaction is “of net benefit to Canada” to “not harmful to Canada” * agricultural subsidies/protections need to be reduced over time. In any event, they will be challenged again in the renegotiation of the USMCA Agreement in 2026.
