Plant Breeders- Plant Breeding is essential to the development of new higher yielding crop. Few under stand that developing a new variety, from start to finish is 12 years. Ontario has to open their eyes to the housing and development push that is eating up all of our productive land. We need new varieties that can be substancial producers in the north. Our southern varieties take too long to develop for the short growing season. Unfortunately government are far to short sited, the next wave of housing will significantly reduce the amount of food we can produce. We are going to be importing food in a much larger scale. Then groceries will really cost more.

This pic may not interest many but it is a grass/alfalfa mix growing in a field (3rd season since planting) on Vancouver Island. Alfalfa does not usually grow in Southern British Columbia, Canada because we have cool/wet winters and alfalfa can do cold but not wet. Well, work on seed development has created an alfalfa (more than 1) that is not susceptible to root rot (this is DLF Eclipse) and so, I began trialling it with my clients and they are having success. That means they are getting a higher quality forage, and hay from their own farm and not having to buy as much off farm. This is 5th cut growing right now. 5 cuts of grass/hay in a season is a big deal. I like research and development that serves my clients needs. #dlf #coolforage #BCfarming #BCAg #BCMilk #BCCattlemen
