As I continue my learning journey here, I have to acknowledge that Canada’s history is layered with complexities, and it’s our shared responsibility to peel back those layers and truly understand. Today, on National Truth and Reconciliation Day, I had the profound honor of joining, amongst other events, a livestream hosted by Grandmother’s Voice. As a newcomer to this land, I found myself reflecting deeply on my role, privileges, and intersecting identities. Three things I was reminded of: - Indigenous identities today are a beautiful tapestry, where ‘white names’ and spirit names are interwoven with countless threads of history, culture, and resilience. - The power of truth—and how it cuts through even the deepest darkness, revealing what has long been hidden. - Knowledge is passed down through song—each note a vessel of ancestral wisdom, carrying the stories of generations with grace. The speaker also spoke beautifully of quiet, simmering pain—trauma left unchecked that consumes lives, much like the legacy of residential schools. Over 4,100 children died in those schools, and thousands of Indigenous women and girls remain missing or murdered. This resonates not only because of Canada’s past but also due to the violence faced by Indigenous communities in Bangladesh. Recent attacks in the Chittagong Hill Tracts left at least 17 dead as these communities fight for their rights and survival. I am haunted by how these stories—whether in Canada or Bangladesh—are bound by the same thread of suffering, reminding us that the pain of erasure and violence knows no borders. Possibly, the most profound reminder today was our collective duty to honor these spirits, to learn the truths of this land and others, and that to make reconciliation more than a word—it must be the heartbeat of our future. #EveryChildMatters #TruthAndReconciliation #IndigenousPeoples

ICYMI, #Torontonians, #Ontarians, #Canadians especially: "Work on redeveloping #OntarioPlace into a spa and waterpark has been paused until July 19, after a group hoping to preserve the site won a legal hearing to #challenge the #project on #constitutional grounds. #OntarioPlaceProtectors is seeking a #declaration that the #RebuildingOntarioPlaceAct — passed by the #DougFord #government in an effort to expedite the #redevelopment — is #unconstitutional, breaching the #doctrine of #publictrust. '#OntarioPlace doesn’t belong to the current government, it belongs to the #people of #Ontario and future #generations,' said Eric Gillespie, the lawyer representing Ontario Place Protectors, a broad #coalition of #residents and #organizations, including numerous #architectural interests. 'The government appears to be breaching the #trust that is owed to the people of Ontario,' Gillespie said. The #application, which will be heard in #OntarioSuperiorCourt, includes #affidavits from #organizations including the Architectural Conservancy Ontario and the Toronto Society of Architects, among others. The Austria-based company #Therme is building a $350-million water park and spa on the #WestIsland at Ontario Place. Work began June 23. Ontario Place Protectors said the Ontario government agreed 'not to cause or permit any permanent destruction of any trees, shrubs or buildings at Ontario Place,' until after the one-day hearing is held. But the news seemed to take provincial officials by surprise. At Queen’s Park, Infrastructure Minister Kinga Surma told reporters she could not even say whether the #legalaction had temporarily stopped work at Queen’s Park ... Gillespie said Ontario Place Protectors has been working closely with #OntarioPlaceforAll, which lost a legal challenge at Ontario Divisional Court in June, requesting that an #environmentalassessment of the site’s West Island, where the spa is being built, be conducted. Gillespie said the new #law will also be challenged on the grounds that it improperly erodes #judicialauthority by preventing all #remedies under all #statutes when it comes to Ontario Place. 𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗗𝗢 𝗜𝗧! Is it just me – or is everyone focussed on perfection these days? Perfect people. Perfect relationships. Perfect conversations. The truth is – NOTHING is perfect! So while we’re busy trying to make everything perfect – opportunities pass us by… This is especially true for nonprofits. Particularly in fundraising. While we’re busy trying to write the perfect email, time is moving on. While we’re fussing with images for our website – we’re missing the chance to connect with people who might want to support us. And while we’re trying to steel ourselves to make phone calls asking for support, we’re tripping over ourselves – because we don’t want to trip over our words, and not say things properly. And creating MORE anxiety for ourselves! There’s a phrase I learned a while ago that guides me in times like these: “Progress over perfection.” Instead of worrying about every little detail – just move forward. Send that email. Write that letter. 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝗸. 𝗨𝗽. 𝗧𝗵𝗲. 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲! People who care about you and what you do don’t want you to be perfect. They just want you to be you. And if you’re a Fundraiser, or an Executive Director, or a Program Manager – supporters just want to hear how you help others. About the impact you’re making. They don’t care if you trip over your words or don’t get everything right – they just want to hear about your commitment, because they want to help too! So, with that in mind, I strongly suggest you move past your anxiety, and do what needs to be done to move forward. Connect with your support network. Lean on them – that’s what they’re there for, and they want to help! And if you’re stuck – send me a message: I’d be happy to share words of encouragement! Shavua Tov, As many in our Toronto Jewish community have heard, early Friday morning, my Synagogue, Kehillat Shaarei Torah, was targeted in an antisemitic hate crime, where the exterior windows were smashed with a hammer. Fortunately, no one gained entry to the building, and there were no injuries or further damage. However, the impact of this act against our Shul and community cannot be understated. While this incident has left us all with a feeling of vulnerability, we are taking immediate and proactive steps to enhance the security measures at our synagogue to ensure the safety and well-being of our congregation as well as the Jewish community as a whole. These steps include: Collaboration with Law Enforcement: We are working closely with the Toronto Police Hate Crime unit to investigate this incident thoroughly and to ensure that appropriate measures are in place to prevent future occurrences. Improving Security Infrastructure: Shul President , Helen Lewis, the Board, Rabbi Kanofsky and myself will be reviewing the most immediate and impactful ways to improve the security of our building and will be making immediate upgrades to our most vulnerable areas. Support and Solidarity: In times like these, it is essential that we stand together as a community, offering support and solidarity to one another. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you require assistance or support during this challenging time. Working with Jewish organizations: We are working with UJA Federation of Greater Toronto , cija, B'nai Brith, and others to ensure our community as a whole is kept abreast of any new developments. As we navigate through this difficult period together, we will draw strength from our shared values of resilience, compassion, unity, and love. Just as our people coming out of Egypt, together we will overcome any obstacles and emerge stronger than ever before. The challenges faced by individuals with dementia and their families are profound, and the challenges facing concern highlights a critical need for more comprehensive support. As a society, there are several areas where we can and should be doing more for those affected by dementia: 1. Public Awareness and Education: Increasing public understanding of dementia can reduce stigma and help communities become more supportive and inclusive. 2. Support for Caregivers: Caregivers, often family members, need substantial support. This can include respite care, counseling, and financial assistance. 3. Funding for Research: Investing in research is crucial for finding better treatments and ultimately a cure for dementia. 4. Policy and Advocacy: Stronger policies and advocacy efforts are needed to ensure that dementia care is a public health priority. 5. Community Programs: Expanding community-based programs that provide socialization opportunities, physical activities, and cognitive therapies can help those with dementia maintain their abilities and quality of life for as long as possible. 6. Technological Innovations: Leveraging technology to aid in care can improve the quality of life for people with dementia and their families. 7. Holistic Care Models: Adopting a holistic approach to care that includes medical, emotional, social, and spiritual support can provide more comprehensive assistance to those affected by dementia. The work done by communities like the Meadows is invaluable, providing essential care and support. However, a broader societal support is necessary to truly address the needs of those affected by dementia. It requires a collective effort from government bodies, healthcare systems, nonprofit organizations, and the public to create an environment where individuals with dementia and their families are fully supported.
