InsightswithSaamarth- When I first landed in #canada, finding a job 💼 was a distant dream, not because I wasn't good enough, but because there was #covid all around. People were being laid off and companies weren't hiring. Then in June 2020, I got my first #interview and I screwed it up within the first 30 seconds, why? Because I didn't understand how to answer questions the Canadian way, I was way too focused on technical stuff and forgot to talk about the cultural aspects, that make a huge difference in North America. Long story short, I got rejected ❌ from 17 companies, some in the early stages, some during the final stages. The bottom line was that I learnt a lot from these failures!! Hey Product People 👋 Please, meet PM # 2 who successfully landed a product position in Canada even though there was a lack of formal product experience. 💼 Case: steps that led to an offer. 1. Found a job posting on Linkedin. 2. Applied. 3. Found a CPO & a Director (assumed they were hiring managers since it’s a small company). 4. Reached out cold to both on LinkedIn, explained the background. 5. Heard back and found that the Director forwarded the application to the CPO because of the cold message. 6. The application was prioritized above the other candidates in the search. 🔎 Context: pre-work, number of applications and interviews, etc. 1. Solid tech background in Canada as a developer. 2. The domain of the new job matched previous experience. 3. Lack of formal experience as a product manager. 4. Had been applying for 4 months, ~ 50 applications, 8 interviews, 2 final rounds. 💡Insights: what helped, what didn’t, thoughts on the market and the job search process. 1. Luck is always a factor. 2. What helped get to interviews: prompt application and reaching out to hiring managers, explaining why you are the right person for the job. 3. Scraping your network for connections helped get referrals and connect with hiring managers. 4. Here's what stood out according to the feedback from the hiring manager: prompt reaching out (within 1 day after the job opening appeared), domain match, and technical knowledge. 5. What didn’t work: applying to job openings at large companies without referrals. As a result – no replies and ghosting. 6. Responding to postings on LinkedIn led to interviews; applying on other platforms didn’t help. ✨ Encouragement for job seekers: Applying and getting no replies is frustrating. It feels like my energy is going nowhere. Try taking courses, attending meetups, and talking to other people. It will give you a sense of accomplishment. And it also reinforces your resume 🙂 That’s the case for today. Biggest REGRETS immigrants have... Last week I met many immigrants in Ontario and Quebec and had super insightful conversations. They came to Canada as international students and now have their PRs. One of the questions I asked them was "What are some of the biggest regrets you have since you came to Canada?" The common answer was -Focusing on getting a PR and earning money. What do they mean by that? A lot of immigrants come as international students and their program lasts from 2 to 4 years. Most international students need to get survival jobs to survive - but a common mistake they make is they make these survival jobs their main focus for their entire degree to be on the safe side to get their PR after they graduate. Some students get multiple survival jobs in hopes of a backup option for their PR and earning more money. This takes away from their main goal - finding a job in their field and being successful in their career. Are you in the same boat? Are you trying to find opportunities in your field? Change your mindset and start focusing on building your career. Everything else will fall into place. If you are in your first year, put in the time to attend networking events, do online courses, volunteer to work at organizations, and put yourself out there. The product leadership job search is completely different from the IC PM search. Colin Lernell (and 3x Sr Dir of Product) and I talked to: • 7 external executive recruiters • 2 internal big tech executive recruiters • 2 VC talent teams • And 10 CPOs and VPs To learn these 5 things that you need to know: 1. Less and less jobs get listed Till the Group PM and Principal PM level, 90%+ of jobs are still listed on job boards. But as you move even higher, those numbers start dropping considerably: • 50-70% of (Sr) Director and Head Of roles • 20-50% of SVP and VP roles • <20% of top exec roles This means that you have to change your strategy entirely. FROM: Reaching out to listed jobs TO: Finding unlisted jobs, and also becoming a magnet for one's you don't 2. There's a huge difference between early product leaders and top execs One of the biggest misconceptions is all levels of the product leadership job search are the same. But it's critical whether you are the top, number 2, number 3, or just nth product leader. 3. The process takes longer While an average principal or Group PM role can get filled in 1 month, more senior roles take a longer time. Companies might even take up to 6 months to hire a top product executive, even with the help of executive search firms and VCs. 4. Retained search firms and VCs drive placement at the top The two channels that drive the most placements for the most senior roles are not applications or internal recruiters. Rather, they're personas most PMs aren't used to: retained search firms and VCs. So, how do you engage with these folks? • Retained search firms: you want to build lifelong relationships with individuals at these firms, helping them before they help you • VCs: you want to keep active relationships with top VC partners in your industry niche and the top VC firms 5. Compensation goes hyperbolic at the top And it's worth going after these gated roles (if you're qualified). Because the compensation goes hyperbolic. It's that equity part, especially. Top executives might have cash comp of 2x Group PMs but equity worth 20x. SUMMARY: 1. Less and less jobs get unlisted 2. There's a huge difference between early product leader and top executive 3. The process takes longer 4. Retained search firms drive placement at the top 5. Your true growth as a Product Manager is least reflected in your increasing paycheck. The real win is elsewhere. For meaningful PM career growth, here is what you need to internalise : Your PM compensation growth is the lagging indicator of : The 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 you are having in your current role and impact you previously had. You might think that scope and levelling are also key inputs to compensation, but that's not the case. Here is why: Your performance will be largely judged by the impact you are having in your current role. Above-expectations impact will automatically increase your scope and comp faster than your peers and with time your levelling will also grow via promotions. Hence impact is most important input. Given the importance, here is how to think about impact as a PM : 1. Drive extreme clarity about where do problems exist and where do most impactful opportunities lie so that people understand and believe in the investment. 2. Drive clarity on what the team should focus on with right prioritization and sequencing. 3. Deliver and validate the impact via strong execution - Making progress quickly on the short/mid/long term goals repeatedly, builds your reputation as a PM. As you grow senior your focus shifts from questions like "is it right problem to solve" to questions like "are we investing in the right place, is this area, is this team, is this org the right investment?" etc. #pmcareer #productmanagement

A Product Manager's role is essentially to: 1. Understand what is currently going on with product and what should be done to hit the business goals - vision, product strategy, roadmap, problem solving, decision making etc. 2. Influence your peers in a way that they get onboard to do what needs to be done with least amount of resistance. 3. Being a strong communicator to communicate what matters to your team, leadership and partner teams to create a shared understanding of the progress and roadblocks. All the skills a PM needs/develops and tasks which they do on day to day basis revolve around above 3 activities only. #productmanagement

**From Resumes to Referrals: Addressing the Systemic Challenges Faced by New Immigrants in Canada** Navigating the Canadian job market as a new immigrant can be challenging. Despite my best efforts - tailoring my resume, upskilling through certifications, expanding my LinkedIn network, attending career fairs, and seeking guidance from career counselors—I have noticed a concerning trend, many companies prioritize internal hiring or referrals, leaving limited opportunities for external candidates. This approach overlooks a vast pool of talented individuals who may not tick every box on a job description or have an extensive network. Evaluating candidates solely based on a two-page resume is insufficient. Candidates whose experience aligns with the job description by at least 70-80% should be given the opportunity to showcase their skills through a screening call or interview. Despite submitting 15-20 job applications daily with customized resumes and cover letters, I have received minimal responses, except for a few calls from recruiting agencies. This raises concerns about the authenticity of job postings and whether they are simply used to backfill internal candidates or promote existing employees. It seems there is a significant gap between what job seekers are presented with and the actual hiring process. I question whether employers are genuinely seeking external talent or just going through the motions. A more thorough and inclusive assessment process could help uncover hidden gems and ensure a diverse and merit-based hiring process. I am not alone in this struggle, and I hope my voice resonates with others facing similar challenges. Product Management is Dead? Far from it. Product Management in Digital Products was the valley's answer to address the disruptive nature and ambiguity around tech products. Disruption and Ambiguity. You needed folks with the "CEO" mindset (aka the founder's mode) to address these challenges- who could go cross functional, dive deep into singular problem ares as well as look at strategy and execution at the same time. "Chad PMs". Of course, with the skills, came the money and with the money; the role became more attractive. Circa 2015, in order to understand the job better, there was an overload of frameworks flooding the job seeker's market to help them crack PM roles. It worked; only as a tool to secure the job. But, in the process, we tried to standardise a job role that was meant to deal with ambiguity. Hence, failures led to alignment led to the PM function of today being totally out of sync with what the PMs were meant to do. To top it, narratives like "PM is not the CEO of the product" are being popularized to dissipate the very nature of the role- someone who can stand up, make decisions for the product (of course, informed) and then follow through with those decisions even if it means your stakeholders aren't happy (so long as they are ready to partner with you, they can see a therapist for their happiness). So, Product Management of today is not Dead. It never was Product Management in the first place. Chad PMs will stay. After many years in product I finally decided to take my first, and probably last, "PM course": Shreyas Doshi's Product Sense course: https://lnkd.in/g6Gm9YzU Why my last? I don't think I'll ever need to take another course after this. He asked our honest take, so here's mine: The premise of a PM course always felt ironic to me because doing product in theory is never *remotely close* to doing product in practice. Well, this is finally the course that is built for, and built by, product in practice. Name a product concept that you've banged your head against the wall trying to put into practice (I'll name a few: Product Sense, Product Strategy, Product Vision). You've already read 5 books, 10 medium articles, and listened to 12 podcasts, and still feel like doing it yourself is like grabbing water. Every one of those concepts (and more) has finally been decomposed, distilled, and packaged into something that can compare to working directly with a world-class product leader yourself. Do yourself a favor and take this course, there is nothing remotely close to it that I'm aware of in existence. Also: you will laugh - guarantee you'll experience at least 1 moment of catharsis as Shreyas Doshi skewers some aspect of the tech industry and our experience as product people within it.

I don't envy those seeking their first product manager role. I saw an associate PM role requiring 3+ years of product experience. How do you build that many years of experience without actually being a product manager? It feels like an impossible task. My advice – find ways to act like a product manager without actually being a PM. Shadow PMs at your company, observing their roles, asking them questions, and potentially picking up some of their duties. Eventually, you’ll build a toolkit that provides you the experience necessary to apply with confidence. To begin, build relationships with the PMs at your company. Find one who’s working on something interesting and schedule a coffee chat. A baseline relationship will go a long way. Next, lend a hand with a current initiative. Contributing to an existing project rather than initiating a new one will help ensure you're seen as helpful, not a hindrance. Here are 5 ways you might be able to do this: 𝟭. 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸. ↳ If you interface directly with users, share feedback directly with the PM as it relates to their current focus area. Explain why it matters. If implemented, follow up to learn the results. Document any success metrics and choose the best ones to highlight on your resume. 𝟮. 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀. ↳ Ask to sit in on upcoming interviews or user tests. Offer to take notes and share insights during debriefs. This will give you insight into the discovery process and user experience principles. When I transitioned into product, this was the go-to skill I highlighted. 𝟯. 𝗤𝗔 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀. ↳ Product teams are frequently launching new features. Being part of the testing process can give you firsthand experience in QA, exposing you to their ticketing structure, board management strategy, and deployment process. 𝟰. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵. ↳ The PM might be researching competitors for a new initiative. Participating in this research can provide you with insight into the business strategy and a view of the competitive landscape. 𝟱. 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘇𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮. ↳ If you're savvy with data analytics, use it to highlight something interesting or insightful that can aid the product team. You might reveal a perspective they hadn’t considered. (Part 3/3) This is one of 3 types of metric tradeoff questions you'll encounter in your Product Management execution interviews👇 And this is how you ace it 💯. Share this LiftoffPM 🚀 lesson with a friend trying to get that "strong hire" rating in their upcoming interviews! 🤔 How would you design an experiment (eg. to increase revenue)? 📝 The key component here is scoping down the problem towards an area that would be the most impactful to experiment on. Revenue growth is a very nebulous goal -- it’s up to you to narrow down the scope of the test. First, clarify the question like you normally would. For the north star, this was pretty much set for you since the question is about how to increase revenue. Note, you will want to define the specific definition of revenue such as ARPU per year or LTV. Scope down the problem. Walk through the user journey to gather thoughts on which part of the funnel would be most effective to experiment within. For the Target app for example, a user has to: [1] be drawn to and choose Target as their shopping destination for the items they’re thinking of [2] be able to find those items either in store or online at a price they like. This could mean literally searching for the product as well as being able to easily compare and contrast items [3] and successfully checkout with those items. Then, narrow in on a focus area so that you are experimenting on the part of the funnel that has the most room for growth. Based on what we know about Target, their checkout process is probably smooth enough. They are a Fortune 500 company, not an upstart e-commerce site trying to break in. Let’s descope bottom of funnel optimizations. While Target is a well-known brand, they still face stiff competition from other stores like Walmart and Amazon. They sell many undifferentiated items, like groceries, paper goods, etc., so you could guess that Target needs to beat out the Walmarts and Amazons for business in that sector. To do this, Target needs to draw more people into choosing Target for their shopping. Furthermore, revenue growth isn’t going to come from people who do their weekly shopping at Target; it’s going to be from people who don’t have a particular store they are loyal to. So for this question, we can run an experiment to see if we can increase shopping amongst the occasional and rare shopper cohort. Finally, just like you would in an experiment one-pager on the job, specify your hypothesis, audience, and experiment arms. Most Director to CPO Product Leadership roles are never posted - here's how to find them. The hidden job market for product leadership roles is a reality that many aspiring Directors, VPs, Heads of, and CPOs may not be aware of. We interviewed 7 external Executive Recruiters, 2 internal big tech Executive Recruiters, 2 VC talent teams, and 12 CPOs/ VPs about the product leadership job search. Here’s what we’ve found: At least 80% of Chief Product Officer roles are never publicly advertised and even 30%-50% of (Sr.) Director roles get filled without cold applicants. This means that solely relying on job boards, you're missing out on a significant portion of available positions. Companies post these roles much less often for a variety of reasons: 🚫 They don’t want the press to speculate 🚫 They don’t want the current leaders to know 🚫 They don’t want to waste time on lots of low quality applicants 🚫 They don't think the best candidates will apply Remember that reputation matters as much as your resume when you become a leader. So how do you find the roles? 1️⃣ Executive Recruiters They run a high percentage of leadership searches at top startups and public companies. Exec Recruiters have helped me get more than half of my Director, VP, and CPO offers. 2️⃣ VCs VC firms, especially those with talent arms, know which portfolio companies (even public ones) are hiring and want to deliver valuable candidates. They can direct you to executive recruiters or directly to the companies. 3️⃣ Your Network To sniff out opportunities, tap your network of tech executives, past bosses and skip managers, founders, and other product leaders. Shift your mindset from a reactive job seeker to a proactive opportunity seeker. While it may require more effort, the payoff is big. The difference between a great and a bad product leadership role can mean 5-10x outcomes in your career. 💡 Understanding Different Product Manager Roles 💡 One of the most common questions I get my interactions with aspiring Product Managers is, What are the different types or product managers and what do they look like? The first thing you need to understand is that not all PM roles are made the same, product management is a diverse field with specialized roles to fit various organizational needs. These are commonly found in product lead growth companies such as #Airbnb, #Lyft etc. They work very closely with marketing, business development and are heavily outward focused. This category of PMs is also catching up in #Google, #Microsoft as well. 🔧 Technical Product Manager: Leverages a strong technical background to manage products requiring advanced technical knowledge, bridging the gap between engineering and business. These PMs are also external customer focused buy work equally if not more closely with engineering, and design teams than sales and marketing. The most distinct feature for me is that customers are also technical - IT, SWE as they most commonly own B2B SaaS/Cloud products such as #AWS, #Microsoft. 🛠️ Platform Product Manager: Manages underlying technology platforms, ensuring they meet the needs of various applications and services, balancing technical requirements and business objectives. They own platforms that enable the external customer products within the company, and their customers are internal product , developer teams. They share the deep technical knowledge as Technical PMs. Very common in multi product technology companies . #Netflix, #Uber are a great example of these and have strong platform PM teams.
