AI represents a powerful opportunity to transform the delivery of patient care, as well as help solve some significant system challenges. One such area where opportunity abounds is helping to address the unbelievable administrative burden on our already overworked health care providers. Yes, there can be real value in the information and data being captured by doctors and healthcare providers -- but this comes at a price (and not all of it may be delivering value today). Indeed, in a recent survey by the Ontario Medical Association, "documentation" was cited by as a major driver contributing to "physician burnout" by the province's doctors. Incredibly, some doctors were reporting spending two hours of time documenting every one hour encounter with a patient -- and family doctors reported spending upwards of six hours a day ON PAPERWORK! I don't know about you, but I'd rather have my doctor spend more time on caring for me than documenting the encounter itself! The use of AI tools -- as well as a deliberative, thoughtful, and purposeful approach to determining how and why specific information is to be documented -- needs to be part of the picture to reducing the administrative burden on physicians, other healthcare providers, as well as system administrators. There's a new Canadian law coming down the pipes that will help give you more access to your healthcare data. Having been helping with Healthcare data interoperability for more than a few years, here are the main challenges we face to making this a reality: 1. Interoperability standards must be NATIONAL in scope, otherwise the implementation burden for vendors is too high to be practical. However, since the implementation is always provincial, the provinces are regularly trying to apply their own special sauce to their regional implementations, which then makes the national specification discussion more difficult. 2. Interoperability standards must have a common approach to VALIDATION testing. This is highly technical, and difficult to do well. The same national vs. provincial tensions exist here as in item #1 3. Designing the standards is currently done on a mostly volunteer basis. This works but is very, very slow. It is difficult and highly skilled work, and needs to be recognized and funded as such. 4. Many strong voices advocate to accomplish the goals of this legislation by centralizing to the same applications rather than improving interoperability. The genie is out of the bottle on this one --- any vendor that can play be the interoperability rules should be able to enter the game. Everyday we see more and more #AI digital health tools accelerating the adoption of preventive, precise and personalized medicine in hospitals, primary care and across health systems. According to a JAMA study #obesity takes an average of 5-20 years off a person’s life. Worldwide, obesity is responsible of 5% of total annual deaths. Canada needs to embrace the power of AI to transform healthcare Canada needs to learn from the best in the world and embrace the power of artificial intelligence (AI) if it is to deliver its ambitious plans for digital healthcare. Many of the most striking examples of digital transformation of healthcare are found not in the major Western economies but in countries such as Singapore, Israel, Saudi Arabia and India. While digital progress in many of the mature health systems is patchy and slow, those at the cutting edge are putting AI at the heart of their development. In India, Apollo Hospitals has created what it claims is one of the largest data lakes in the world to power its Clinical Intelligence Engine (CIE), a self learning Clinical decision support tool used by Apollo's 4000 doctors that can diagnose over 1300 conditions covering 95% of the cases seen in outpatient clinics. In Saudi Arabia, the Seha Virtual Hospital, which has no physical patients, supports almost 500,000 people annually through a network of 130 hospitals, enabling people living in the most remote parts of the country to receive care of a quality only previously available in the capital, Riyadh. It is the largest virtual health facility in the world. Meanwhile private healthcare provider HMG operates the largest medical command centrein the world, 800 ITU beds across its hospitals in Saudi Arabia and abroad. This optimizes care, capacity and the flow of patients throughout the system. These are just some of the examples highlighted by international healthcare leaders - the Beamtree Global Impact Committee - abode of thought leaders convened by international SI and health data company, Beamtree - in a report called Human Intelligence: Using AI to Unleash Patient Power, unveiled to coincide with the World Health Organization's World Health Assembly taking place in Geneva, Switzerland. Across the world, governments and healthcare systems are confronted with growing demand for care and a shortage of clinical staff. What the leading innovators have realized is that, to ensure services are sustainable for the long term, it is essential they unleash the power of patients and citizens through digital technology to manage their own health and healthcare. Years after industries such as retail and travel exploited digital technology toslash costs while improving and personalizing the consumer experience, healthcare is finally changing. The development of apps, wearable and 'nearables' illustrates how consumer technology is transforming healthcare - they can already measure sleep quality, heart rate, skin discoloration, blood pressure, blood oxygenation, breathing rate, g,ucoselevel, cadence, balance, body temperature, voice quality and behavioral changes.

That said, with legislation like this, the devil's in the implementation details. 🚀 Day 6/10 of University of Waterloo's MDEI Design Sprint ✅  In the quest to redefine digital self-service at CIBC, today's focus was on synthesis and strategy! We honed in on what makes an app not just functional, but engaging. 🎯 Day 6 Highlights: ✅ Presented our vision: I kicked off our presentation to our industry mentor Lyndon Pan, framing our problem statement and showcasing our proposed solution. ✅ Analyzed feedback: Leveraging Overlap Associates feedback grid, I prompted a structured approach to our design critique. ✅ Prioritized features: We received 20+ potential callouts! I utilized an impact/effort matrix* from Nielsen Norman Group to evaluate and prioritize features, streamlining our development focus. ✅ Design refinement: With many potential updates, I jumped into Figma myself to apply some of our user insights, refreshing our badge and progress tree designs for a more intuitive user experience. *Key Learning: Every piece of feedback is a golden nugget that's bringing us closer to a product that's as delightful to use as it is to look at 🎨 But we need to focus on what's going to make the most meaningful impact to users... while being mindful of the effort it's going to require. Desirability. Viability. We recently started working on a fascinating project with the National Research Council Canada / Conseil national de recherches Canada Centre for Air Travel Research. This UX research project focuses on the critical and often controversial topic of managing mobility devices like motorized wheelchairs for disabled travellers. User Experience (UX) design goes beyond creating digital interfaces. It's about developing solid, robust services and products that ensure seamless and frictionless experiences.
