We have been telling governments for years that there is little to no enforcement to ensure certified driving schools are following rules and regulations. Many schools do not come anywhere close to teaching what they are supposed and the minimum hours. Governments have barely even bothered to give it lip service, and have ignored most suggestions we have provided to improve enforcement. This is also not just an issue in Ontario. Maybe they will do something now???? I am not optimistic, but am hopeful. The government leaders at the top need to put resources towards this to make a dent! Today the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association, Canadian Automobile Dealers Association - CADA, and the Global Automakers of Canada launched the Countdown to 2035. The Countdown illustrates how little time we have to prepare for an all-electric vehicle fleet. If there is any hope of meeting the mandated zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) sales targets established by the federal government, urgent action is required now to put Canada on the path to widespread ZEV adoption. This depends on an unprecedented national effort to build charging infrastructure, expand the electricity grid, increase clean electricity production and help more Canadians switch to electric is urgently required. Automakers have announced over $40 billion in job-creating investment in Canada to build a ZEV supply chain. We are calling on the federal government to ensure that its environmental policies are working in conjunction with our industrial policy. #auto #EV #ZEV #cdnecon #cdnpoli

So to recap Friday: The CIRB found that while a Teamsters Canada Rail Conference strike would be inconvenient and economically harmful, it would pose threaten public health or safety, so the clock has restarted toward a labor action as soon as August 22 at 12:01am (although there are some talks I've heard about clarifying whether the timing of the decision means it is August 23, not August 22) As I've hinted at before from sources, now is fact, the CN and CPKC want the Labour Minister to involve binding arbitration, which was used in June in the WestJet dispute with mechanics. The union doesn't want binding arbitration. The union also points out that binding arbitration didn't work with WestJet and there was a two day strike (although management claims it was an "illegal" strike and will go to court). My opinion: 45% a strike, 45% binding arbitration invoked, 10% deal before the deadline. Personal opinion only.

Public transit workers, post-pandemic growth in employment Transit worker numbers have been growing steadily in Canada, with some periods of rapid growth. Data obtained from Statistics Canada via Haver Analytics shows that the number of transit workers jumped by 55 percent from 2001 to 2005. The following 15 years witnessed another steady period of growth. The pandemic delivered a temporary pause in transit workers' growing strength, but the lull in growth lasted no longer than the pandemic. Since early 2022, Canada's transit worker numbers have grown by 14 percent.

So we have a congestion crisis. As Brian F. Kelcey correctly reminds us, this isn't news. What is newsworthy is that our poll with Ipsos in Canada revealed that 85% of residents recognize the economic impacts of our infamous gridlock - and that this crisis goes well beyond the downtown core. Congestion is changing behavior across the GTHA. People are reluctant to go shopping, visit a restaurant, take a job in another part of the region, even visit family and friends. It also threatens to drive the next generation of workers to greener, faster moving pastures. While the numbers are higher in the City of Toronto, 55% of people in Peel region are contemplating a move. #congestion #toronto #gtha #economy #livability

Today the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association, Canadian Automobile Dealers Association - CADA, and Global Automakers of Canada released new polling data on British Columbians attitudes towards electrification and the government’s zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate requiring 90% ZEV sales by 2030 and 100% by 2035. The survey finds there is a clear disconnect between the government’s regulated ZEV sales requirements and the realities facing British Columbians when they consider buying a new vehicle. According to the poll, 40% of respondents will not consider a ZEV for their next vehicle purchase. With ZEV sales at 21.8% in Q2 of 2024, there is no pathway to 90% sales in 5 years without significantly more British Columbians considering a ZEV. Overall, half of British Columbians are opposed to the mandate. Not surprisingly, the survey shows that the more aware someone is of the mandate and its implications, the more likely they are to oppose it. Transport Canada has released a new report that measures zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) availability across Canada. The report finds that ZEV inventories are meeting or exceeding consumer demand across the country. According to the analysis, ZEV inventories in 9 of 10 provinces are at or above target supply levels. The report undermines the federal government's primary rationale for a ZEV mandate - a lack of vehicle availability. Rather than mandating what types of vehicles Canadians buy, a more effective approach is to focus on reducing barriers to ZEV adoption.
