Did you know that MDRC’s story of impact includes the United States’ northern neighbors? In 1991, we created a Canadian “sibling” organization, the Social Research and Demonstration Corporation (SRDC). Like MDRC, SRDC’s original purpose was to administer a large-scale demonstration project — in this case, testing the impact on families of a wage supplement for parents living in the provinces of New Brunswick and British Columbia. At the Canadian government’s request, MDRC designed the demonstration project and created SRDC to administer it. The broader goal was to build capacity in Canada for the design, operation, and evaluation of new social programs and policies at scale, just as MDRC had done in the U.S. A team from MDRC led by Gordon Berlin — who went on to become MDRC’s president in 2004 — served as SRDC’s original executive leadership and program staff, guided by an advisory board of Canadian academics that included economist David Card, a future Nobel Prize winner. SRDC soon established its own identity, building out a team of home-grown Canadian staff and leaders. But it continued to collaborate with MDRC on studies of the long-term impact of wage supplements — part of a wider international effort to build evidence about “making work pay” — while Gordon Berlin continued to serve on its board. Gordon Berlin went on to provide 15 years of transformative leadership for MDRC as its president, expanding MDRC’s reach into new policy domains and growing its capacities to develop and use evidence to improve policy and practice at a wider scale. Today, SRDC tackles many of the same issues as MDRC, adapted for a Canadian context. Recent projects, for instance, have sought to make the skilled trades more inclusive for indigenous people and to help immigrants trained in healthcare relocate to jobs in the country’s remote and rural regions. New case study! 📢 Learn how RIC helped the small team at the Town of Canmore (TOC) prepare for disaster and close emergency preparedness gaps with a done-for-them recovery framework. After a challenging fire season across Canada in 2023, the TOC team realized they needed a more comprehensive disaster preparedness plan. They were looking to develop a plan that would help them get ready for the re-entry and recovery process in the wake of disaster, and provide a clear path forward for all parties responsible for disaster recovery. TOC has a small team with limited resources working to support a growing community, including a fluctuating population of temporary residents and tourists. The team didn’t have the bandwidth to complete an audit of their preparedness strategies and build a framework to support their community’s unique needs. RIC took the work of putting together a comprehensive Disaster Recovery Framework off of the TOC team’s desks. With expertise in recovery planning best-practices as well as deep local knowledge, RIC provided the Town with a done-for-them framework that will empower everyone involved in emergency management in Canmore. Key Outcomes: ✅ 16,000+ community members are supported by the Disaster Recovery Framework RIC created for the TOC. ✅ RIC saved the TOC over 70+ hours developing the framework, providing specific expertise the team didn’t have and reducing the lift for their overburdened team. ✅ The framework provides greater safety and security with a structured process that provides visibility into previously unknown factors and areas where action should be taken. ✅ RIC’s framework facilitates communication with potential aid and funding providers, enabling the TOC to make a strong case for funding. Electronic Monitoring Program Expands to Clarenville Area   The provincial government has expanded the #electronicmonitoring program to the Clarenville region. The region spans from Bellevue to Port Blandford along the Trans-Canada Highway and all of the Bonavista Peninsula.   The program allows for enhanced supervision for offenders on probation and conditional sentence orders where the court has imposed the electronic monitoring condition. It also enhances the supervision of those on a temporary absence from correctional facilities where electronic monitoring is deemed appropriate.   Offenders in the program wear ankle bracelets that provide 24/7 location data to probation officers to help enforce conditions such as curfews and no-contact orders.
