Enterprise Mobility reports that Canada’s overall length of rental (LOR) was down 1.2 days over Q3 2023. Canada’s non-driveable LOR was 26.5 days in Q3 2024, marking a 6.2-day drop year over year. The Auto Mayors' Roundtable in Stratford Friday brought together mayors, industry leaders, and economic development representatives from across Ontario. The opening remarks highlighted the #teamontario approach for automakers and noted the automotive industry as one of the largest contributors to our economic base and the biggest employer. Electric vehicles were the focus of the conversation with Volkswagen/PowerCo. kicking things off. Brent Hinson, CFO, PowerCo. highlighted the value of getting communities to talk to each other, being flexible and adaptable to technology shifts, and the changing environment in the EV automotive industry. The future of automotive manufacturing is high-tech, with a demand for chemical engineers. Beverly Goodman, President, Ford Motor Company Canada noted that they are working aggressively to electrify their vehicle line up. EV's are coming and the industry is growing and we need alignment with the U.S., our largest trading partner. 80% of the vehicles built in Canada are exported to the U.S. Brian Kingston, President & CEO, Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association demonstrated the growth the EV industry with the increase in EV models- 3 in 2012 to 100 in 2024. He underscored the need for standards for charging stations, and proper infrastructure (public and private charging stations) to support EV consumers. AutoCanada MUST CLEAN UP THEIR OPERATIONS. Selling poor performing dealerships (big problems at Stellantis) and a disastrous U.S. operation is a start. Paid WAY too much without effective due diligence (including the 2 BMW Canada Inc stores in Montreal....a huge write-down years ago). Paul Antony has his work cut out for him, still digging out from mistakes in the past. We're pulling for AutoCanada. It was a great story that has gone sour ($90/share back in the day). I worked with AC and knew what needed to be done, but my newly-created role was eliminated while the company struggled years ago. Holding people/leaders accountable (internally and dealership G.M.s) was not practiced company-wide.
