A lot of conversation around #AI could feel repetitive, but luckily for us, MIT Sloan Management Review has recently delivered us brand new research and insights into how to effectively utilize #generativeAI: including how to optimize performance and productivity with AI, and importantly, how to set reasonable #sustainability goals and build discovery groups to promote #diversity in the workplace! The article goes a lot more in-depth than my short post could do justice — including lists of upcoming trends and technological shifts to be mindful of in 2024, as well as a webinar series by MIT Sloan lecturer George Westerman that aims to demystify and contextualize the role of AI in near-future. Definitely give this a read when you have some time. I’ve been arguing that ultimately, AI is a tool not unlike a calculator — new technology will feel less scary and disruptive once we have had time to fully understand it. These reports prove my point, and even just one full year into the big AI boom, we have a model of #ethical and #sustainable rules to set as a precedent for the future. How do you feel about this? A few months ago I had the incredible honour of interviewing Marion Weinzierl and Jeremy C. on a topic that means a lot more to the field of supercomputing than most people think: Volunteering. All those meet-ups, special interest groups, hack-a-thons, workshops, and even most conferences require hours of time and energy that are unpaid. In the early 2010s this began to change somewhat, with bridge-building roles like the Research Software Engineer (RSE) emerging in our space - of which Marion and Jeremy are two of the best. (Yes, that is my opinion and yes, I'll fight to hold it! 😉 ) This role did something rather unusual - it put community into the heart of the job description. Thanks to that, RSE events are some of the best organised, and most diverse, that I've been happy to be part of. Thanks to their hard work and dedication, along with countless others (including Community Managers - another role that has popped up in prominence) there is over a decade of knowledge on what it means to set-up, run, and keep a community going... specifically one that requires volunteers. And while most of what we discussed might seem like practical sense - fact is volunteering is very much a person-by-person experience. You cannot account for every scenario, nor anticipate what drives interest to (or from!) the work you seek to achieve. Contrary to common fears of AI leading to job displacement, the view of my practice, supported by insights from experts like MIT SMR's David Kiron, suggests a nuanced evolution of productivity metrics. AI isn't merely a tool for automation or augmentation; it's a catalyst for redefining "performance" within our organizations. The real question isn't about the number of jobs AI might replace, but how AI can integrate into our business ecosystems—comprising employees, partners, contractors, and more—to foster a more dynamic, innovative, and efficient workforce. Businesses like Novartis are exemplars, leveraging AI not just for operational efficiency but as part of a holistic workforce strategy that emphasizes collaboration and innovation. For SMEs, this means rethinking productivity beyond traditional metrics. It’s about how effectively we can harness AI to complement and enhance the unique strengths of our human teams, driving not just efficiency, but also creativity and strategic insight. HBR's 10 Must Reads on AI 🤖📚 All in all, worth the read. As a compilation of 12 articles from HBR there are many different angles explored. My top three from the book are: 3. Developing a Digital Mindset by Tsedal Neeley and Paul Leonardi 2. Why You Need an AI Ethics Committee by Reid Blackman 1. A Smarter Strategy for Using Robots by Ben Armstrong and Julie Shah Number 1 above is a must if you work in the maritime container industry - it's gonna push your understanding of automation and the role of humans in the future. Very good read! Another huge takeaway (although I know that from past readings) - Leadership is fundamental in driving any effective AI revolution in your business (which is argued as the only path forward). Strong leadership that starts with a foundational knowledge on the topic of AI is crucial to driving teams forward and knowing up from down, left from right. To quote, "The right approach [to getting AI to scale]... is to identify a crucial slice of the business and rethink it completely." This is the approach we take in container terminal and distribution center optimization at INFORM.
