A new report from Microsoft, conducted by Accenture, finds that generative AI has the potential to add $187B to the Canadian Economy by 2030. We know that generative AI is transforming industries across Canada, from healthcare to financial services to energy and the public service. Dive into the report to see how gen AI is creating major growth opportunities and why we must accelerate its adoption in order to make the gains we need to help Canada remain competitive. Right now, only 9% of Canadian businesses are currently using gen AI and public trust remains low. In celebration of Canada Day, I’ve written an article with my colleague Alex L. addressing a growing regional challenge in the AI space: Lagging AI Infrastructure in Canada. Through experience navigating these regional decisions and conversations with businesses and organizations in Canada’s AI sector, it’s become evident that a broader tech issue is hitting AI particularly hard. As the industry’s development pace accelerates, frustrations mount over lagging capabilities and limited AI infrastructure options compared to our US counterparts. This situation poses a critical question for AI decision-makers: Should we continue to support local infrastructure or shift towards the US to access better technological opportunities?

Could embracing AI be the key to turning it around? 🤔    While completing an application to join the board of a not-for-profit, Mike Barry – the head of Microsoft Canada – has highlighted just how valuable (and efficient!) AI can be.     Using his very own generative AI tool, Copilot, Barry asked for a five-paragraph letter of interest based on his LinkedIn profile.     The result? He only had to change one word before hitting send.   And it got him (and us) thinking: if more businesses and leaders embraced AI tools, could our productivity problem be solved?    “The truth is Canada has, unfortunately, a long history of not adopting new technologies as fast as others, in particular, the U.S., and some of that does show up in the labour productivity stats,” Barry said.    It is up to leaders to take the time to educate themselves on AI tools, identify key areas where they could make a difference and pass this knowledge on to their workers.     Let us emphasize the phrase ‘key areas’, though.
