Canadian Ford dealers have been required to sign up for one of two Model e programs to sell EVs, with an investment of about $560,000 or $1.3 million per rooftop for charging infrastructure and training. Now, "We recommend Ford of Canada dealers also [as with U.S. dealerships] pause their charger-related investments where possible.” The question is, what has changed?

The Auto Mayors' Roundtable in Stratford Friday brought together mayors, industry leaders, and economic development representatives from across Ontario. The opening remarks highlighted the #teamontario approach for automakers and noted the automotive industry as one of the largest contributors to our economic base and the biggest employer. Electric vehicles were the focus of the conversation with Volkswagen/PowerCo. kicking things off. Brent Hinson, CFO, PowerCo. highlighted the value of getting communities to talk to each other, being flexible and adaptable to technology shifts, and the changing environment in the EV automotive industry. The future of automotive manufacturing is high-tech, with a demand for chemical engineers. Beverly Goodman, President, Ford Motor Company Canada noted that they are working aggressively to electrify their vehicle line up. EV's are coming and the industry is growing and we need alignment with the U.S., our largest trading partner. 80% of the vehicles built in Canada are exported to the U.S. Brian Kingston, President & CEO, Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association demonstrated the growth the EV industry with the increase in EV models- 3 in 2012 to 100 in 2024. He underscored the need for standards for charging stations, and proper infrastructure (public and private charging stations) to support EV consumers.
