#Spacetech is one of those interdisciplinary skill sets that tend to get ignored in #canadianeducation classrooms. Building coherent systems for spacecraft requires levels of #engineering that we let slide on Earth where failure won't kill you. Combining #robotics, #chemistry, #biology, #physics, #electronics, #ICT, #materialsciences and pretty much every other subject, space technologies offer learning opportunities that encourage interdisciplinary connection and the highest levels of #technology integration. We need to bring the best of ourselves if we're to survive the challenges of space travel (in both #STEM and culture). Sparking interest in that challenging journey needs to start in public school so students are taking the right post-secondary pathways. I hope InspireTech & Canadian Space Agency | Agence spatiale canadienne can find more ways to create those sparks. Artemis is coming soon!

My Cameco Story: Bizarre Interview Experience to Proud Cameco "Alumni." In 2009, right after the subprime mortgage crisis when job opportunities were scarce, I had an interview with Cameco for the Senior Network System Administrator position. I prepared thoroughly by compiling all possible technical questions, answers, and my experiences into a binder, which I brought with me to the interview. Cameco paid for my flight to Saskatoon in November. The interview panel included a tech lead, a tech manager, and HR representatives. Many of the HR questions were cleverly integrated into the technical scenarios, showing me that Cameco wasn’t just looking for a skilled tech professional but also a good team player. I felt I understood and answered the questions well, but I was still anxious. I joked that I needed my binder for comfort. After the interview, I was surprised to receive an email asking me to complete a core competency questionnaire with three open-ended questions. I quickly responded with detailed answers, and a week later, I received an offer. My worries weren’t entirely unfounded, though. I was more concerned about my English skills than anything else. Although I had used English before coming to Canada, it was mostly for reading and writing. My listening and speaking skills weren’t strong enough even for basic conversations, like talking to a cashier. It turned out that the interviewers had difficulty understanding me, but they all agreed that I was confident in my responses, and they liked the idea of having me on the team. The hiring manager, Sean, came up with the idea of sending me the open-ended competency questions to further evaluate my English skills. They told me that as long as my reading and writing were acceptable, they could adapt to my accent and offer support to help improve my English. They also joked about wanting to see what was inside my binder. This experience highlighted Cameco’s culture of inclusivity. They supported many aspects of my career development, and it became clear to me that Cameco is truly a people-oriented company. Attention, future out-of-province job seekers: Wearing just a suit to an interview in Saskatchewan winter won’t cut it — be sure to bring a winter jacket! I arrived at Cameco's head office nearly frozen. Big thanks to Wayne, who guided me to the washroom and suggested I warm my hands under the running hot water. Although I eventually left Cameco to pursue my dream as an entrepreneur, I will always appreciate the lessons I learned there and the joy my former coworkers brought into my life. Cameco is one of the best-run companies and a true HR powerhouse in Saskatchewan. I proudly call myself a Cameco "Alumni."
