Cava Reporting previously on Franciacorta, I remarked that the question always surfaces as to how well it and other traditional method sparklers compare to Champagne, yet it is always the wrong question. We don’t judge Argentinian Malbec vs. Côtes du Rhône just because they are both red and have no bubbles, so why should we do that to two sparkling white wine regions? Today’s excellent masterclass on Cava by the bemedaled wine writer Jamie Goode was never going to be distracted in this way. D.O. Cava has been pursuing its own path, with new regulations in 2020, and new winemakers and new styles continually emerging. Once seen as rather humdrum, Cava is increasingly producing interesting and delicious wines, bottlings that are happy to compete with good Champagnes on price, but offering a quite different experience. Significant sales in many international markets are testament to this – headed by Germany, but with France in sixth place. Yet Champagne is part of the Cava story. When phylloxera began to attack French vineyards in the early 1860s, vignerons and négociants looked to Spain as a source of vines and wines. They took their knowledge with them, and just as the Bordelaise re-made Rioja, so the Champenois commuted Cava. The Spaniards adopted essential elements such as early picking for freshness and acidity, gentle pressing, careful blending and long ageing on the lees, yet Cava is a style of its own. Its green apple and citrus signature – most evident in the lesser bottlings - owes something to the terroir: the warmth of the south balanced by higher altitude, and local grape varieties long adapted to the soils. The second of today’s producers on tasting, Roger Goulart, was one of the pioneers, from 1882, and today concentrates on long bottle ageing in the Champagne tradition. Their Gran Reserva Josep Valls 2019 further acknowledges these origins by including Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the blend alongside the mainstay Cava varieties of Xarel‑lo, Macabeo and Parellada. From there we moved forward to more recent houses. A pale but appealing Superiore Reserva rosado is made by U Mes U, which dates from 1973. Bodegas Hispano & Suizas was established in 2006 by three self-described soul brothers, Marc Grin, Pablo Ossario and Rafael Navarro. Eduard Viader’s Muscàndia label dates from 2010, yet he draws inspiration from the work done on yeasts by his apothecary grandfather a century ago. The last dry wine was from Pere Ventura, created in 1992. Their emphasis is on the top end, and the Tresor Superior Gran Reserva 2021 was exceptional: highly aromatic, with Cava’s usual crispness transformed into something altogether more mellow and subtle. To finish, the very tasty and wonderfully inexpensive Vilarnau Delicat Reserva 2021 rosado with a touch of sweetness. Now there’s a wine that cocks a snoot at Champagne. Thanks to D.O. 🙈 🙉 🙊 Day 10 of the LCBO Strike... Last night, we had a small win from the LCBO. The announcement confirms that local distilleries, wineries, cideries, and breweries approved by the LCBO can now sell directly to LCBO Convenience Outlets, which we were previously blocked from selling into. We'll take this temporary victory! Dear Participant of the LCBO Direct Delivery Program   As OPSEU’s strike continues, LCBO acknowledges the impact on small businesses looking to shop with us and on Ontario’s beverage alcohol industry. LCBO Convenience Outlets (LCOs) continue to be a valued option for Ontarians to purchase alcohol, as are local producers.     To support small businesses looking to increase access to products and those looking to sell, effective immediately and for the duration of the strike (but not beyond September 4 2024), we are temporarily expanding the LCBO’s Direct Delivery Program to include LCOs. This means that as a manufacturer authorized to participate in the Direct Delivery Program, you can now fulfill orders for Ontario-produced cider, wine, ready-to-drink, and spirits directly to LCOs.     All Direct Delivery Program policies and processes apply to LCOs, as they do for all other businesses that are eligible for direct delivery of your products. Here is a list of eligible program participants you can contact directly to fulfill your orders.    Note: LCO pricing is the same as it is for other licensees. That is a 10% discount from the basic price as calculated in the “Calculator” worksheet of the Reporting Template.    We have provided LCOs with a list of manufacturers authorized to participate in the Direct Delivery Program and have advised them to be in touch directly for ordering. 🍷 🏀 As we wrap up our fiscal year at MAG, we remain committed to our long-term growth strategy despite the declines in alcohol consumption in Canada. For reference, the wine industry is currently down 6%, losing almost 2M cases over the last 16 months. The Luxury Wine segment in Canada is growing +6% (5yr CAGR) & worth about $1.3B in sales, giving it a 18% share of revenue sales, while only owning 7% of total vol. sales. Although consumption is down, the value of wine sales remains strong, consumers are buying better, just less frequently. I have also noticed a similar trend in sports, directly related to the monetization of fans & sponsors. Think of all the new stadiums & renovations being completed, many of these clearly state a purpose to achieve an enhanced focus on luxury. Consider ticketing, what was once a simple 3 tier system, good/better/best, now multiple tiers exist & packages offering behind-the-scenes access, parking, ultra luxury suites, access to exclusive wine & food pairings etc. As a result, many stadiums are opting to remove thousands of seats only to replace them with a few hundred, larger, more luxurious seatings options. Taking their revenue earnings from a mere $2M, to north of $20M by maximizing the depth of offerings.  You can’t just charge more money & put a bigger seat in, you must deliver on your full luxury experience. As an in-house example, the Milwaukee Bucks Inc. have recently partnered with renowned winery, DAOU, making this Daou’s first National Basketball Association (NBA) partnership. The winery unveiled an exclusive luxury lounge at Fiserv Forum, offering access to limited edition tastings, & The MICHELIN Guide star food. The pursuit of excellence & the shared focus on creating memorable experiences ultimately brought this deal together. What’s Really Inside Ready-to-Drink Cocktails? Ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktails have surged in popularity in recent years, offering convenience and flavor in a single, pre-mixed package. These convenient concoctions promise to deliver the taste of a freshly made cocktail without the hassle of mixing ingredients at home or waiting for a bartender. But what exactly goes into these pre-packaged libations? Base Spirits: Most RTDs feature a blend of spirits like vodka, rum, gin, tequila, or whiskey. These spirits provide the alcoholic kick and set the flavor profile for the drink. However, the specific type and quality of spirits used can vary widely among different brands and products. Mixers and Flavorings: To recreate the complexity of a well-crafted cocktail, RTD manufacturers incorporate various mixers and flavorings. These can include fruit juices, syrups, bitters, and other flavor enhancers. While some RTDs use natural ingredients and artisanal mixers, others may rely on artificial flavors and additives to achieve a consistent taste.
