A common challenge I encounter in closure/post mining land use is the lack of connection to an non-production business model. ESG as compliance is a cost line item that fights for attention, and the more you spend the more production is required to offset, and the further down the track it is the less you want to spend today. Post mining business models that improve triple bottom line profitability, either through revenue or cost or risks, are the underpinning need to drive strategy, plans and action today. And that's just at the existing site/asset level. At the corporate level, there's alternate business models that change the fundamental paradigm, but that kind of change requires real change in the ecosystem (i.e. finance/capital markets) as well as to the risk profile and ways of working of the business. I don't think I've really seen a "miner" who has scaled an alternate model yet, though perhaps they are out there and I just don't know? #mining #esg #energytransition

🤔After the CED event yesterday and our latest look at Alberta’s economic growth, I’m left with a question that never really goes away for me: Are we truly growing together, or is it just some of us moving forward? That question drives everything I do—whether it’s building Calgary Catalyst, leading communications at Pedesting, or sharing insights from every session I attend. I believe in collective growth, and I know Calgary has what it takes to make it happen. But are we there yet is a question every leader has to ask themselves. I’m inspired by the progress we’re making—like Calgary’s strong entrepreneurial support programs and our advocacy for inclusivity. How far are we and what can we do to achieve equitable growth in all aspects. It reminds me of that line from Trolls: No troll left behind😅 Silly yet mighty! Here are some of my thoughts on how we can make collective growth possible in Calgary: 1. Support local businesses: Did you know that for every dollar spent at a local business, 68 cents stays in the community? 2. 📚 Invest in education: Alberta’s tech sector is booming, but there’s a skills gap holding us back. 3. Make housing affordable: It’s hard to talk about economic growth when many in Calgary can’t afford a stable place to live. 4. Champion fair wages: In Calgary, living costs are rising, yet wages aren’t keeping up for many. 5. Encourage entrepreneurship: Calgary is already known for its entrepreneurial spirit, with over 45,000 small businesses calling it home. Can we make it even better? How? 6. Facilitate access to capital: For too many aspiring entrepreneurs, access to capital feels like a closed door. Platform Calgary 7. 📊 Promote financial literacy: Research shows that financial literacy among Canadians could save billions in personal debt annually. 8. Foster inclusive hiring: Here’s a fact: companies with diverse teams are 35% more likely to outperform their competitors. 9. Leverage technology for ALL: Digital inequality is real. In a city as innovative as Calgary, why should anyone be left behind due to lack of access to technology? There’s a lot of effort put in to this by city and I would love to learn more and understand its impact too.City of Calgary 10. After a year's-long construction saga, TMX finally delivered its first barrels in late May. The milestone marks a new chapter for Western Canadian markets, with the significant expansion unlocking new westbound capacity to Pacific Basin markets. With TMX operations still in the very early stages, many questions remain. How quickly and to what magnitude will TMX volumes ramp up? Will the Port of Vancouver be able to accommodate the necessary uptick in shipments to support a highly utilized Trans Mountain system? How will volumes on other routes out of Western Canada be affected? Wood Mackenzie’s unmatched, real-time supply chain monitoring provides clarity on all of these questions as TMX re-shapes the Canadian crude landscape in the coming months.
