The emerging Canadian "Project Finance for Permanence" model for funding Indigenous Led Conservation provides an interesting model for developing long term support for conservation, restoration and stewardship by Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities. For example, a major Indigenous Led conservation initiative in NWT of Canada which will cover over 380,000 sq. km. will have a C$375 million fund, out of which $285 million will be directed to a conservation and stewardship fund, which will be spent down over a 10-year period. Rest of the money will go to an endowment fund. Canadian Federal Government funded $300 million, and philanthropies the rest. An article in Narwhal describes this initiative and the arrangements. Apart from the innovative "permanence" part of this initiative, it is important to note that its Canadian Government money from government budget, being put into conservation. Luckily, Regenerate Cascadia is offering to support participatory mapping processes in landscapes throughout Cascadia, including help with developing an ecosystem of regenerative funding - but, we don’t go where we’re not invited in! So watch out for the details - that are coming soon if you are interested!

Next up in our grantee profiles is: Planetary's Halifax Area Climate Change Empowerment project! 🌊 With help from HCi3, Planetary underwent a rigorous community consultation process ahead of their ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) project in the Halifax Harbour. OAE is the addition of a mild antacid to the ocean which neutralizes acidic, atmospheric CO2 and stores it permanently in the water. Planetary engaged with Indigenous communities, conservation groups, and fishing communities to test the social feasibility of using OAE in Nova Scotian waters. In the photo below, you can see the pink water from a “dye tracer study” which was led by Dalhousie University. This study was conducted to gain an understanding of how the addition of the antacid would disperse in the water. Curious about the work that Planetary is doing? Sustainability/ESG friends!! Niche request/crowdsource… CONTEXT: 🤓Over the holidays I’ll be spending some time updating course content for the course I teach in sustainability/impact reporting and measurement at BCIT. One of the things that has always been tricky has been guiding students through the “alphabet soup” of frameworks and standards, preparing them to enter the field with a strong base of knowledge, while also holding space for how in flux everything seems to be. As a professional, it can be challenging to keep up to speed on everything “new” and “emerging”; as a student seeing these things for the first time, all the more so. 🤯 HYPOTHESIS: My proposed solution: bring back more ✨story/narrative✨ into the discussion, rather than simply relying on teaching the frameworks. We need to connect with the emotion/feelings/WHY of this all, before the WHAT can really connect. ASK: I’m curious 🧐 if any of you know of excellently researched long-form content (books, long-form articles, podcasts, etc.) that speaks to the STORY behind common ESG/sustainability frameworks. Ideally, beyond a loose narrative around “investors are looking for increased convergence and interoperability” (true, but *yawn*). 🎭 Looking for the socioeconomic/political context, the drama, the key players (actual people not institutions), the underdogs, the spear in the chest, the unresolved tension, the last minute resolution… more Netflix documentary, less technical briefing note. I want the TEA! ☕️ Specifically would be interested in narratives around GRI and SASB as foundational frameworks, as well as the development of ISSB and CSRD (origin, emergence, divergence). But if other resources come to mind, have at it! I’m pretty comfy on the actual nuts and bolts of the frameworks (thinking/logical), but hoping to bolster the feeling/heart side of the content. 🦋 IN RETURN: I’m hoping there’s some good value created just by sharing some resources, but I’m also committed to reading through and synthesizing what comes. BC CLIMATE ELECTION Episode 5: Let’s talk about strategic voting… This one feels trickier to write, as I always feel so conflicted about strategic voting. But the more research I do into this election, I feel like it needs to be said. The BC Conservatives are a very real threat to climate action, reconciliation, and a host of other social issues (health care, housing, mental health & addiction, SOGI). They’re not even good for our economy. The BC Cons platform is backwards, based on the same fear-mongering hysteria that’s taking over so much of our politics. So this election, personally, I’m embracing the strategic vote. ✅ Strategic Voting 101 In BC, we have two progressive parties - BC NDP and BC Greens. And we have just ONE right-wing party. The issue? While more voters support progressive overall, the Conservative candidate wins, as the progressive vote is “split” between the NDP and Greens. Strategic voting: Rather than vote for the candidate you’re most aligned with individually, vote for the candidate most likely to defeat the Cons in your riding. In BC, this most often means voting NDP (whether you support NDP or Greens). Honestly, I don’t think that’s a bad thing - as I’ve said before, the NDP has done a (mostly) good job of pushing through some strong progressive policies in a very tricky political environment. As Ken Wu from Endangered Ecosystems Alliance said: “I want to be sure that no group comes forward with any nonsense false equivalency, that because there have been failings from the NDP so far [...] that’s not the same as having an agenda that is antagonistic and diametrically opposed to these goals” ✅ However, a plea to strategic voters… If you are voting strategically it is SO important to look at the data specific to your riding. The NDP is most often the strategic option BUT NOT ALWAYS. (e.g. in my riding - West Van-Sea to Sky - the GREEN candidate is the more competitive progressive option, and is thus the ‘strategic’ vote. This is also true in some Van Island ridings) So please, if you’re voting strategically, please do your due diligence! I use 338canada.com/bc ✅ Strategic is not always the right choice. In ridings where there is little to no competition, the strategic vote matters a lot less. Again, do your due diligence. AND, ultimately, if you feel like you truly wouldn’t be at integrity voting for your “second-best” candidate, don’t do it. Follow your heart, and at least just get out and vote. 📣 POST SERIES: the BC provincial election is a climate election 🌎🌏🌍 // I’m attempting to compile some of my thoughts on this, in the hopes that my friends and colleagues in BC will keep mama earth in mind when you go to the polls. I also recognize that many of my colleagues on this platform are much better informed than me, and I welcome additional perspectives into this conversation. Correct my data! Add your thoughts! This is one of the core barriers to #nonprofit sustainability in our communities. How can one plan beyond an annual budget cycle when most of our funders refuse to change their scarcity funding practices? The answer to the question of whether nonprofits can be sustainable is that we need to ask a different question. What systemic barriers exist to prevent nonprofit sustainability and how can our community leaders push for changes with people in positions of power? Because collective change to funding practices benefits us all and I am tired of my colleagues fighting for scraps. #WaterlooRegion #CharitableSector #NonprofitManagement

I’m a big proponent of hiring Board members 30 and under. Not only will it bring new ideas and perspectives but it will also make a significant impact in the career opportunities and trajectory of a young person building their not for profit career. I really feel (from experience!) that this is one of the key ways that the not for profit sector can create a path for a much more diverse next generation of leaders.
