🇨🇦 Usually, I'd source and plot the data, but when it declines over 18 consecutive quarters, I don't think there's much point. This is why I made a pitch in April to the Sr. Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada to look to what made Japan great for ideas on how to turn our productivity around. Alas, to no avail. I guess we'll muddle through with the same-old/same-old hoping for the best but expecting the worst. From the article: "The latest decline has lasted 18 quarters, making it the second longest in the past 40 years. Only the decline of 1989 to 1994, which lasted 21 quarters, was longer... Not only does Canada lag most developed economies, Canadian provinces also fall far behind almost all U.S. states... Ontario last year had a per-person level of economic output similar to Alabama, said Tombe. The Maritimes were below Mississippi, and Quebec and Manitoba lag West Virginia. "You have to publish that as a book." - Kyle Racki No one really knows how to integrate AI as a business owner and you're unlocking and democratizing access for the small business community. After delivering a few sessions to small business owners with the Halifax Chamber of Commerce (Thank you Becky Davison, MBA, PMP for pushing me to do this). We have many more throughout Atlantic Canada on the docket through the rest of 2024 and 2025, it's clear the desire to adopt is high and the ability find the right way is proving elusive. There is really only one other meaningful business voice in Atlantic Canada right now - Robert Newcombe ⚗️. There are a few others who are mastering it in their fields - Ross Simmonds comes to mind in Marketing and of course Kyle Racki in the world of proposals. But most are struggling with few options to help them. The space is full of tools. There are giants who are claiming success. And, paradoxically, most small business implementation attempts are increasing workloads, causing frustration, and actually costing companies with little in the way of the promised returns. I have a pretty good understanding why. A book is a lot of work. Would you read a book on the way to actually integrate AI for success in your business?

So back in 2017, quite literally on a dare, a team of 6 people decided to run FWD50 in Ottawa. I did NOT have "be a free library of hundreds of public sector innovation talks" on my Bingo card. But here we are. Since 2020, we've also been recording, captioning, and publishing our talks. In 2023, our best-attended workshop happened online—with over 850 participants. A lot has changed in the last 15 years. It's no longer enough for brands to invest in their website alone—they need to meet their customers where they are to succeed. As an agency, Barrel has evolved from focusing solely on a client’s website to examining the entire customer journey, seeking opportunities to enhance how customers shop and experience the brand across touchpoints. Many of our clients are CPG brands, making this approach even more relevant. These days we're working on building Shopify B2B E-Commerce storefronts, designing Amazon content, creating personalized email/SMS flows, and implementing Shopify POS. Shopify has continually evolved with merchants' changing needs and customers' buying patterns. They’re not afraid to embrace partnerships like Amazon Buy with Prime while investing the same energy in POS and B2B that got their core e-commerce offering to where it is today. The Summer ’24 Edition is aptly titled ‘Unified’ and, as usual, it’s a lot to digest. The addition of a “Top 10” summary this year is a great starting point. Among my favorite updates are unified & tailored Markets experiences across B2B and retail, store credit availability, split shipping in checkout, and seamless store pickup between POS and DTC. I attended an #Indigenous #entrepreneur and economic development gathering recently and asked several founders: How much support or business do you receive from your own community? Almost everyone said none, with one person saying very little. We talked about how easy it is for non-Indigenous businesses to show up at Chiefs’ and organizations’ conferences, walk away with contracts then and there. Meanwhile, our own people are overlooked, often due to lateral violence and folks in power not wanting others to do well or better than them from a financial standpoint. In my own case, after five years, I’ve never sold a single item to my community. With my revenue share model, they could net over $400,000 annually just by shifting their spend to my company. Instead, they actively choose to pay higher prices elsewhere. Every person I spoke with at the event shared similar experiences. There’s also the common excuse: “Our spend is so small it won’t make a difference.” But these small decisions add up, and they matter. Indigenous business owners already face countless challenges, and lack of support from our own communities only adds to the weight. It’s a tough reality, but it also speaks to the resilience and determination of Indigenous entrepreneurs. These are conversations we need to keep having—because the path forward starts with awareness and understanding.
