As the world becomes more digital, nonprofits in Canada are under increasing pressure to adopt and maximize the use of digital tools to fulfill their missions. However, digital skills across nonprofits vary widely, affecting their ability to deliver services, manage data, and engage with collaborators effectively. Through the Canadian Centre for Nonprofit Digital Resilience | Centre canadien pour la résilience numérique—and in collaboration with our partners at The Dais at Toronto Metropolitan University, Digital Governance Council | Conseil de gouvernance numérique, and Imagine Canada—we've written a new report on the state of digital skills in the nonprofit sector, pinpointing gaps and shedding light on the challenges and opportunities nonprofits face as they work to strengthen their digital capacity. Select teams will advance to the second round in which they will work closely with BMO to tackle a related, but more focused, problem. The Challenge is open to all post-secondary students across Canada. No prior knowledge about systems thinking or expertise in mental health or well-being is required. “Mission 1 in B.C.’s Digital Plan calls upon government to deliver accessible, inclusive and connected services for people. The Provincial Data Plan puts that call into action with a focus on improving data practices and building impactful data initiatives. This helps to better understand issues, provide equitable services, advance reconciliation and deliver better programs with measurable outcomes. With these goals in mind, the [Parks & Recreation Digital Service] team [of teams] at BC Parks collaborated with the BC Data Service on a Data Register Pilot to set a standard for the most basic building block of digital government: accurate, ethical and reliable data [in respect of park names, with a specific focus on enabling the proper representation and treatment of Indigenous names].” I am not a product of the digital era. None of this work has come naturally to me. So I lean on and learn from my betters to every possible extent. In that context, ever since first reading the work of folks like Richard P. and others on “Government as a Platform,” and seeing the designs of “the GaaP stack” produced by thinkers and doers like the team at Public Digital, visualizing as they do the foundation of effective government services as accurate, reliable, extensible data (see attached image), I’ve always wanted to play some part in making that “stack” real in our work. Given this, when the opportunity arose to partner with teammates in the BC Data Service on the first-mover project described in the linked blog, our Parks team went all-in. The results - not least the teaming, learning and true collaboration - that I was privileged to withness from my alongside supporting role, cheering on the project’s true leaders like Jessica Wade and Jenn Potter, have been super-inspiring - and a source of enabling momentum as we ramp up the pace and breadth of our work in the digital space. Particularly inspiring and meaningful for me has been how the intents and designs of this work took a keen focus on seeking to express meaningful incremental steps towards Reconciliation through a focus on Indigenous place names and data. As our publics move ever-closer to each other, I hope, in part through making real our provincial commitments to the implementation of DRIPA and the co-management of protected areas, I deeply believe it will be a (re)connection with Indigenous ways of knowing and being that, alongside good contemporary data and analysis practices, that will be a critical constituent of the platform upon we all stand as we work towards mutual thriving.
