Electronic Monitoring Program Expands to Clarenville Area   The provincial government has expanded the #electronicmonitoring program to the Clarenville region. The region spans from Bellevue to Port Blandford along the Trans-Canada Highway and all of the Bonavista Peninsula.   The program allows for enhanced supervision for offenders on probation and conditional sentence orders where the court has imposed the electronic monitoring condition. It also enhances the supervision of those on a temporary absence from correctional facilities where electronic monitoring is deemed appropriate.   Offenders in the program wear ankle bracelets that provide 24/7 location data to probation officers to help enforce conditions such as curfews and no-contact orders. "Accessibility Standard Canada (ASC) announced today that it has officially adopted the European standard EN 301 549:2021 Accessibility requirements for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). ASC is also releasing it as a National Standard of Canada under the code CAN/ASC - EN 301 549:2024. Adopting and releasing this standard is beneficial for Canada, as it promotes accessibility in ICT products and services nationwide. The standard also incorporates best practices that are already being used by over 30 countries. ASC is making the standard available free of charge, demonstrating Canada’s commitment to removing barriers and providing accessible ICT for everyone. The standard features accessibility requirements on hardware and every digital technology. It includes software, mobile applications, websites, and biometrics. Some federally regulated organizations and provinces and territories in Canada are already using the European standard. Making it a National Standard of Canada aims to encourage broader adoption of this voluntary standard. As a result, it advances accessibility in ICT throughout the country. Ottawa is a Startup Capital: How Ottawa's Own Veteran-Founded TACTIQL is Equipping Canada's Armed Forces With New Capabilities for Data-Driven Decision-Making in the Field • Read the Story: https://lnkd.in/gqVziKQy As a seasoned veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, Michael N. intimately understands the potential benefits of leveraging commercial scale and innovation to meet the needs of the military.  However, it wasn’t until his experience pursuing an executive MBA at the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa that Nelson started crafting a vision of how these advantages could be realized. During Nelson’s time at U of O, he cultivated a passion for the complex intersection of military operations, emerging technologies, and entrepreneurial ventures. Motivated by this newfound interest, he left the military after a 12-year career to bootstrap a company that could fulfil military needs using commercially available products.  The result is TACTIQL, a 10-person team that specializes in leveraging AI to generate accurate, high-quality video data from military aircraft that forces can put to work to enhance decision-making in the field. The Ottawa startup is conditioning and enriching the data for seamless interoperability with the internal and external systems employed by the Canadian Armed Forces | Forces armées canadiennes. This involves making the data compatible with military visualization and analytics software. It also requires reliable data transmission in highly mobile and complex field environments that require coordination among multiple joint, allied, and partner forces, including NATO.  It is one of many homegrown innovations with the potential to contribute to NATO DIANA as it is implemented over the coming year. This global network will help facilitate cooperation between military operators and the Alliance’s best and brightest start-ups, scientific researchers, and technology companies to help the Alliance maintain its technological edge It is an honour for our team at Invest Ottawa to collaborate with these Veterans turned Entrepreneurs in many ways...from our IO Accelerator program to Area X.O, our R&D complex for next-gen smart mobility, autonomy and connectivity technologies, an ITB certified Public Research Institution and newly designated NATO DIANA Test Centre. US and Canadian defence procurement needs more diversity in the contractor base. Desperately. "Consolidation affects competition for defense contracts, especially for large contracts; half of defense dollar obligations are awarded via sole-source procurement, though 90 percent of individual contract actions are competed, meaning that the majority of competition occurs for smaller contracts. Decreased competition for critical defense systems leads to higher costs and less innovation; fewer competitors means fewer creative ideas for addressing operational requirements. Reversing this trend will not be easy."
