As a senior leader in the not for profit sector in Canada, it was a great opportunity to participate in the Action for Healthy Communities 3rd annual building inclusive communities forum. The key note speaker, Dr. Jonathan Massimi reiterated the importance of building stronger communities through the conduct of community assets mapping. Critical questions regarding the conduct of feasibility studies and community needs assessments were raised. The reminder to all development experts remains the enhancement and strengthening local resources. The conversation was so vital as a reminder that even when external resources are being brought in, it should always be to compliment, supplement and strengthen existing assets and knowledge bases. That was the original framework from which a rights based development lens was introduced. This approach needs to be reprioritized to ensure we are rebuilding sustainability elements into community work. Their recent open letter to the Ontario government highlights the urgency of addressing IPV as an epidemic and taking concrete steps to support survivors and strengthen prevention efforts. Planners are certainly in high demand, but it's not the only gap in the sector. StrategyCorp Inc.'s work with municipal organizations and our upcoming annual CAO survey show that the workforce challenges exist across the full spectrum of service delivery and at all levels of the organization - from senior leadership positions like the CAO and chief planner to clerks, lawyers, and engineers and frontline water, wastewater, and transit operators, to name a few. If ever there was a need for municipal administrations and their elected officials to reflect on their role as employers and spend some time - and probably money - to better support and engage their teams and tap into non-traditional talent pools and recruitment methods, it's now.
