As we approach the end of the year, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on National Payroll Week and recognize our incredible community one last time before the new year. 2024 was special year, we launched the national payroll party in an effort to garner greater support and recognition for payroll professionals. Our crew travelled coast-to-coast, speaking with Canadians about the impact payroll has on their lives. We listened and we learned and we were loud. Through our advocacy efforts, we got the attention from our current Government. During National Payroll Week, The Honourable Mona Fortier declared her thanks and recognition for payroll professionals in the House of Commons, while we gathered together in events across the country - apart but united in song and spirit. About us
The National Payroll Institute has been representing employers’ payroll interests since 1978, through its mission of Payroll Compliance through Education and Advocacy and its values of Community, Professionalism and Authoritative Knowledge. Professional payroll administration is mission-critical because of the magnitude of the remuneration by employers and the breadth of the legislative compliance requirements. Canada's 1.5 million employers count on payroll professionals to annually pay $1.06 trillion in wages and taxable benefits, $364 billion in federal and provincial statutory remittances, and $180 billion in health and retirement benefits, all while complying with over 200 regulatory requirements. As the authoritative source of Canadian payroll knowledge, the Institute influences the operational, compliance and technology policies and processes of payroll service bureaus, software providers, hundreds of thousands of small, medium and large employers, as well as federal and provincial tax authorities. The Institute advocates on behalf of employers to federal and provincial governments, proactively influencing payroll-related legislation to enable all stakeholders to administer them in an efficient and effective manner. As the source of payroll education and advocacy, the Institute delivers certification, professional development programs, and products and services that enable payroll practitioners to enhance operations, meet new legislative requirements and utilize emerging technologies.

Earlier this year we launched Ask Pat, a payroll knowledge navigation tool offered to members to help them access necessary compliance knowledge, quickly and easily. Today we’re pleased to share some valuable updates to the tool. Now, it can help you find information on Salary Overpayments and Terminations. And if you still can’t find what you’re looking for, you can send your question to Payroll Infoline from within Ask Pat. If you haven’t already done so, we encourage you to explore the tool and see how it can make your day-to-day more efficient. It’s one of the many values of membership. https://payroll.ca/askpat

National Payroll Week may be over but that doesn’t mean our advocacy work is done. We launched the national payroll party as a movement to garner support and recognition for payroll professionals and on September 18, we reached a major milestone. Peter Tzanetakis, President and CEO (left) and Rachel Dobrin-De Grace, Vice President of Government Relations and Legislative Compliance (right) met with The Honourable Mona Fortier (centre) at the House of Commons to hear her thank and recognize payroll professionals for their hard work keeping Canadians paid. Let’s – each one of us – keep advocating, rallying, and fighting for the recognition and support that payroll professionals deserve!

If you’ve earned a PCP or PLP designation, or are working toward either, you know those letters stand for professionalism, expertise, dedication, and so much more. But we need to ensure that employers throughout Canada recognize that value. That’s why we introduced Payroll Standards Canada, a self-regulatory body that sets educational and practical requirements, oversees the professional code of conduct and manages the disciplinary process for our profession. By holding ourselves to standards that are similar to other regulated professions (think doctors, lawyers, engineers etc.), we’re taking a critical step to build trust and ensure business leaders recognize the value of the only payroll designations in Canada. This is just another extremely valuable membership benefit that elevates the payroll profession.

We did it! Thanks to your hard work, the Institute’s advocacy efforts and the thousands of Canadians who signed the petition to make the third Tuesday in September a National Day of Recognition for Payroll Professionals, we got the attention of our current government. Last week, as thousands of payroll professionals gathered to celebrate National Payroll Week across the country, our president and CEO, Peter Tzanetakis, travelled to Ottawa to attend the House of Commons and listen to The Honourable Mona Fortier, Deputy government whip, recognize and thank YOU for the work you do keeping Canada paid. This important recognition reflects your hard work, dedication and unwavering commitment to the profession. And that is definitely something to celebrate. On behalf of the National Payroll Institute, we congratulate you for this collective accomplishment!
