The living wage in Metro Vancouver has gone up to $25.68 an hour. Calculations from Living Wage for Families BC and Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives show that a family in Metro Vancouver would have to spend over $4,000 extra on the same basket of goods compared to last year. Over the past few years, the Living Wage has increased dramatically, as rental prices have skyrocketed, and the cost of groceries has soared across the province. Although there are public initiatives that have helped reduce childcare fees and provided some small financial support for low wage workers, the savings are nullified by the surging cost of food and rent. Did you know that people with disabilities can only earn $16,500 a year before they lose their benefits? This can be a real barrier for employers who want to pay their workers a Living Wage, but have to carefully count how many hours their disabled staff are working so they don't go over the threshold and lose access to their benefits and many other entitlements. Over 50 employers signed our open letter calling on the Government to stop the clawbacks of disability benefits. The recent Poverty Reduction Strategy and the platforms of all three parties included commitments to address this issue. There's still a lot of work ahead, but we're very grateful and proud to work alongside our friends at @disability-alliance-bc and @povreductionbc to champion this issue. The “Trapped in the Gap” report found that 1 in 3 workers in BC don’t earn a living wage. Shockingly half of all racialized women in Metro-Vancouver don’t earn a Living Wage. This research highlighted the scale of the work we have ahead of us. Thanks to @ccpa_bc our partners in this research. This year we managed to calculate Living Wage rates for 25 communities in BC. Thank you to all of our amazing community partners who help us with this work. Every calculation involves detailed research and verification to ensure that it is comparable to other communities in BC, whilst reflecting the local situation. It's not easy, but with their patience and passion we can help showcase the specific cost of living issues in each community. And extra special thanks to our friends at the @ccpa_bc without whom we wouldn't be able to calculate any living wage rates. If you're interested in calculating the living wage for your community, then please reach out to find out more!
