We're thrilled to announce that Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre won the World Architecture Festival Future Projects award in its category (Sport)! Coronation is an innovative hub that brings together high-performance sport and community recreation into one world-class facility. Soon to be Edmonton's new velodrome, visitors from near and far can gather, socialize, and play while cyclists race overhead at speeds of up to 80km/h. A joint venture between hcma and Dub Architects, in collaboration with FaulknerBrowns, many hands have shaped the project into what it is today. We can't wait for Edmontonians to make it their own. Congratulations to the project team, Clark Builders, the City of Edmonton, and the long list of fellow contributors on this exciting win! #WAF2024

In collaboration with Sky Spirit Studio Inc. and Urbanics Consultants Ltd., we're incredibly honoured to have partnered with the Squamish Nation, Nch’ḵaỷ Development Corporation , and Hiy̓ám̓ Housing for this very important work. The recent approval of the first phase of the Land Development Strategies initiative marks a meaningful step toward realizing the Nation’s vision for community-led growth in alignment with the Úxwumixw 2050: Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Generational Plan. Exploring the thoughtful integration of Nation housing, market residential, community spaces, commercial uses, and an Elders Village has been a rewarding experience for our team, and we are fortunate for the opportunity to collaborate and help shape spaces that foster cultural, environmental, and social resilience. A heartfelt thanks to the many Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Stélmexw (Squamish People) who guided this process, and to the broader team of collaborators and consulting partners committed to supporting this initiative. Led by our team at hcma focused on supporting Indigenous communities and advancing reconciliation, we contributed to planning for the Stá7mes and Ch’ḵw’elhp sites. We look forward to continuing to support the Nation on a path forward charted by "Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Voices and Vision."
Last week, the Squamish Nation shared an exciting announcement with the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Stélmexw (Squamish People), and we are thrilled to now be sharing the news with the broader community: The Squamish Nation Council recently approved the first phase of Land Development Strategies work – including land uses for three sites totalling over 150 acres, and an extension on the moratorium on third-party development proposals so we can move forward with the next phase of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh-led development planning. We're so proud to have worked closely with the Nation and Hiy̓ám̓ Housing on this first-of-its-kind initiative for our Nation — one that will support the delivery of the Úxwumixw 2050: Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Generational Plan on sites across our traditional territory. Watch the video below and visit the web page to learn more about the land uses for the Marine Drive portion of Xwmélch’sten (Capilano), Ch’ich’élx̱wí7ḵw (Seymour), and Stá7mes, which include a mix of Nation housing, market residential, community spaces and amenities, an Elders Village, and commercial uses. The next phase of work for the Land Development Strategies will include more detailed design of Marine Drive at Xwmélch’sten (Capilano) and Upper Stá7mes. Nation community engagement will be critical to the advancement of this work, and it is important to note that the future development of these sites will require the expressed support of the Squamish People through designation votes. We raise our hands to the many Squamish People involved to make this work a reality: Elders, Community Working Group members, Knowledge Holders, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Staff and Consultants, and the over 500 Squamish People who provided their input. We also thank our consulting partners: Perkins&Will, PWL Partnership Landscape Architects Inc., Modern Formline Design, Ginger Gosnell-Myers, Liveable City Planning Ltd., Bunt & Associates Engineering Ltd., hcma, Sky Spirit Studio Inc., and Urbanics Consultants Ltd. Visit https://lnkd.in/gnuExfzb to view site maps, read about the endorsed land uses, and find answers to all the frequently-asked questions.

Join us November 22 for "Letting go of the old: A new future for recreation facilities", a webinar hosted by IAKS Canada that will dive into how we can reimagine innovative sports facilities for the future. As the idea of recreation expands beyond traditional competitive pursuits, the way we design these facilities needs to shift in turn to accommodate a broader range of participation and physical activity. In this webinar, Development Consultant Ola Mattsson from LOA fonden (Lokale og Anlægsfonden / The Danish Foundation for Culture and Sports Facilities) will explore how the foundation is reimagining its leisure facilities to address the needs of modern society. Sharing learnings from Denmark, he will discuss an innovative approach to shift away from the competitive sports design of the past, and embrace new models that prioritize inclusivity and reflect the varied ways people engage in recreation today.
