Colombia was one of the hardest competitions physically. But, DITR proved to be viable competitors and finished middle of the pack out of 22 teams. It was the experience of a lifetime and we’re so proud of the ladies for the grit they showed. Special thanks to our sponsor The Mosaic Company who was instrumental in getting us to the 2024 International Mines Rescue Competition in Colombia. Their support and dedication to increasing #diversity in mining is key to sustainability in the field. #minerescue #emergencyresponse #competition #minesafety #IMRC2024

About us
Diamonds in the Rough is a project initiated by Kari Lentowicz and Bruce Coley, in an effort to raise the profile of women in the mining industry and in non-traditional roles through mine rescue. Our goal is to foster the development of a woman's underground mine rescue team to advance and retain the skill level necessary to provide emergency rescue services and compete at an international level in what is traditionally a male-dominated environment. There is a pressing need for diversity in the workplace which includes engaging women in the workplace for sustainable operations. We are very in tune with the lack of diversity that does exist and more specifically with women in non-traditional roles. The culture in the mining industry – though it has changed significantly – needs to continue to change to promote the advantages of increased diversity, allow women to feel secure in their positions, and allow minorities to pursue a sustained career path in the industry. Our efforts to increase the profile of women in mining can’t take effect unless we have the support of everyone in our community. If you know of any women who are interested in learning more about mine rescue or emergency response, send them our way. The more people we connect with, the better chance we have of training competent women in the field and increasing a positive light on the need and acceptance of women in non-traditional gender roles. At this time, we have recognized that there will be many costs to the individuals that participate in our program. From registration fees, travel costs, equipment, and wages lost due to time off, there are many financial constraints in our future. We hope that by advertising our projects, we can receive more support. We are preparing to recruit for 2023! Please share our organization widely so we can reach as many women and non-binary in the mining industry as possible!

During the International Mines Rescue Competition in Colombia, the 2024 Diamonds in the Rough participants had the pleasure of attending Dräger night. Drager’s team hosted a fantastic evening and showcased testimonials to the importance and successes of rescue missions with Drager’s BG4 breathing apparatus. Drager has been one of DITR’s biggest supporters since 2018. Thank you Drager for the support and for what you do to ensure we can do our job safely and effectively. #Drager #minerescue #emergencyresponse #competition #minesafety

2024 DITR competitors Amanda Brule and Kari Lentowicz with Dräger superstar Kent Armstrong at the trade show in Colombia during the 2024 IMRC. The women are wearing the new Drager Pro Air - a game changer in the mine rescue world when it comes to breathing apparatuses. Its sophisticated design is exactly what mine rescuers are looking for in reliable, comfortable, and easy to use life saving breathing apparatus. Drager has been a huge supporter and sponsor of DITR since its start in 2018. Without their strong values around diversity, equity and inclusion, DITR would not be where we are today. #Drager #minerescue #emergencyresponse #competition #minesafety

Yesterday, the Diamonds In The Rough and the team at WVU mine extension unit wear purple in honour of Rebecca. Rebecca was viciously attacked last week at her school in Saskatoon by another student after months of bullying. She is now in a hospital on a long journey to recovery. #purpleforRebecca

One of my favourite pictures of my little niece Rebecca when she was only 3 years old. Full of love, wonder, and innocence. She’s even wearing purple in this picture! Last Thursday, Rebecca was viciously attacked at her school in Saskatoon. After months of bullying, her bully victimized her and she is now in the hospital in Edmonton on a long journey to healing. For tomorrow, Tuesday September 10, 2024, please wear purple and post a picture for Rebecca. She needs all the positive energy you can give. ❤️ #stopbullying #purpleforRebecca

MEET THE TEAM: Melissa Vaughan Melissa Vaughan lives and plays in Horsefly, BC on the traditional lands of the Lhtako Dene Nation, Xat'sùll Nation, T'exelcemc Nation and the Secwepemc Nation. She has been a member of mine rescue for almost two years and is always jumping toward more opportunities within the mine rescue realm. She currently has not completed in any mine rescue competitions but looks forward to the challenge, camaraderie, and the epic adventure that competing would bring. Now, for a little fun fact: she is a worm farmer! Thank you to Rio Tinto for the support. Without it, women like Melissa would not have this unique and empowering opportunity. #womeninmining #mines #inclusion #support #diversity #stem #emergencyresponse #training #firstaid #womensupportingwomen #education #competition #minerescue #community #imrc2024 #canadianwomen #womeninstem #representationmatters IMRB - International Mines Rescue Body

Diamonds in the Rough has been making significant strides in empowering women and young girls within the mining industry since 2018. With over 20 women trained through mine rescue programs and a growing number of females entering mine rescue operations, the impact of our work is clear Our efforts have not only inspired women to join the industry but have also influenced other countries to increase female representation in mine rescue. We have seen several countries follow suit and have teams of women train together and compete. We have shown that women are competent and need to be included for a safer and more productive workplace. With our training program, we have instilled confidence, built on leadership ability, and honed mine rescue skills by working smarter not harder. We've done so well; we've even won awards! However, this year, we are facing challenges in meeting our fundraising goals to sustain our program. We are seeking sponsorship to continue our mission. Your support is crucial. Together we can make a significant difference. Reach out for details on our sponsorship packages and how to contribute. Let's work together to inspire more women to join and thrive in the mining sector. #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion #Belonging #Inspiration

Today, DITR co-founder Kari Lentowicz and her fellow members of the Denare Beach Volunteer Fire Department, Erik Johnsgaard (not pictured), and Eric Wallaker (not pictured) as well as RCMP Con. Alicia Hachey and Conservation Officer Evan Michayluk were presented with the St. John Ambulance Life Saving Award. This award acknowledges individuals, or groups of individuals, who have saved or attempted to save a life, regardless of the risk through the application of first aid knowledge and skills. On June 16, 2021, this group of recipients, along with others, responded to an incident and were able to use first aid to save five casualties. The rescuers conducted CPR on a sixth casualty however, they were later pronounced deceased. Though none of these recipients are emergency responders who expect recognition, they risked their own safety to help others in peril. First responders do not do it for glory or recognition. We do it to simply help others. We train for the worst, prepare for the worst and hope for the best. #firstresponders #firstaid #emergencyresponse #saskatchewan Royal Canadian Mounted Police | Gendarmerie royale du Canada #ministryofenvironmentsask

DITR co-founder Kari Lentowicz visited White City, SK this past weekend as a keynote speaker for the graduates of Camp Molly. Camp Molly provides young females aged 15 to 18 years old an opportunity to to meet and engage with strong female role models in their community and the entire 4-day firefighting training camp. This demonstrates to young women that a career in the fire service is a viable and rewarding option. Kari’s keynote presentation was dedicated to rethinking on how we do/can define ourselves when we answer the question “Who am I?” as we go through life. This presentation demonstrates how to tackle challenges during career development as a woman in non-traditional roles and breaking down gender roles. You are more than your physical attributes, more than what you do for a living and shall not be defined by societal expectations. The impressions you leave as you engage with others are your legacy. “You can be whoever you want and, if nothing else, at least be kind to yourself and others.” #diversity #equity #inclusion #minerescue #indigenous #sponsorsneeded #IMRC2024
