During the opening of the GPAI Annual Summit 2024 at the Palace of Serbia in Belgrade, UN Tech Envoy Amandeep Gill highlighted the urgency of building global AI capacity over the next 3–5 years. USG Gill spoke about the need to prepare for the continued evolution of AI by investing in talent development and infrastructure. He noted that without proactive efforts, AI development could amplify existing inequalities and erode cultural diversity. The United Nations is working with agencies such as UNESCO, the International Telecommunication Union, and UNDP to ensure AI discussions remain multi-stakeholder and do not become siloed. The UN Tech Envoy framed these efforts within the Global Digital Compact, which includes foundational decisions on AI governance, such as an independent international scientific panel on AI and investments in capacity-building.
