VUL-1: CVE-2023-1579: binutils: heap-buffer-overflow in binutils-gdb/bfd/libbfd.c in bfd_getl64
Last modified: 2023-11-13 08:10:02 UTC
CVE-2023-1579 Heap based buffer overflow in binutils-gdb/bfd/libbfd.c in bfd_getl64. References: https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=29988 References: http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/detail?vulnId=CVE-2023-1579 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2180905
Looks like this affects SUSE:SLE-12:Update/binutils and SUSE:SLE-15-SP1:Update/binutils. The fix is already in Factory. https://sourceware.org/git/?p=binutils-gdb.git;a=commitdiff;h=3e307d538c351aa9327cbad672c884059ecc20dd;hp=ad2021a0f761e23576820aca50a7ac10d7f40bed
Set this to VUL-1 due to low impact, as this only happens when dumping the source of a file built with DWARF debug symbols. Actual exploitation seems very complicated (other than causing a crash in a CLI tool).
Queued for next version update.

Customer is asking when this will be release for 15 SP4? Also, the customer is looking for a PTF and/or release date for SLES 15 SP5?
The "next version update" I alluded to in comment #3 will happen around September or October this year. PTFs wouldn't normally be provided for these kinds of non-serious bugs.
