Subject: manpages: initrd(4) describes only "change_root", not "pivot_root"
Date: Wed, 17 Aug 2005 18:13:03 +0200
Package: manpages
Version: 1.70-1
Severity: normal

The initrd(4) manpage documents only the older, so-called "change_root"
method, and does not even mention "pivot_root". The "change_root" method
is considered to be obsolete (see Documentation/initrd.txt in the 2.4
or 2.6 kernel source tree).

Until complete rewrite, a notice saying 'the method documented there
is obsolete, see pivot_root(2)' and pointers to pivot_root(8) and
pivot_root(2) in 'SEE ALSO' would be useful, I suppose.

Thanks. I added the following text for the man-pages-2.08 release:

Note: The use of /proc/sys/kernel/real-root-dev to
change the root file system is obsolete. See the kernel
source file Documentation/initrd.txt as well as
pivot_root(2) and pivot_root(8) for information on the
modern method of changing the root file system.

Do you have the time / knowledge for the "complete rewrite"?

Cheers,

Michael
