This dissertation aims to provide a better understanding of the trajectories and stages of evolution of the tilapia industry in Brazil, testing the applicability of the industry evolution model, taking into account the context of global and local food production, along with the competitive landscape and value appropriation strategies for each identified layer. The research strategy adopted aimed to capturing the impressions of the identified layers in this industry – vertical producers, integrated producers and independent producers – evaluating them individually and separately and aggregating the contribution of sectorrelated entities and specialists. The research strategy adopted sought to translate, in a qualitative fashion and from semi-structured interviews, the impressions of the producers, within the three layers, and of the participants of the industry, as to their trajectory and stage of evolution. In the end, the effects related to the expected competitiveness within the trajectories and stages of evolution, identified by layer, were compared, with theirspecific strategies for value appropriation, in order to assess risks and opportunities to increase the competitiveness of this industry, as a whole within the Brazilian scheme. A special recommendation was also made for organizational alternatives to the layer of independent producers in order to sustain their competitiveness.
