This month’s Investment Views discusses the potential policy and market implications of the US election. Bond yields moved higher and US equities outperformed with cyclicals leading the way. There is a great deal of uncertainty in the outlook but the inflation backdrop and financial markets are key guardrails that will help shape and moderate future policy. It's a busy week for our Trust team worldwide... Alongside STEP Asia, nine team members, including senior leaders Michael Neff, Group Chief Operating Officer, and Jane Pearce, Group Head of Trust, will attend the International Private Client Forum at the Villa d'Este in Lake Como from November 13 to 16. It is our great pleasure to return as Principal Partner of the IPCF for the sixth year, as our peers from around the world gather for three days of keynotes, panel discussions, and breakouts. Notably, this year, our own Nigel Mifsud will join Anthony Poulton of Baker McKenzie and Sarah von Schmidt of Farrer & Co. to lead a critical discussion on "Reserved Powers and Trustee Duties: Lessons from Ivanishvili," which will explore pressure points and trustee risks in heavily settlor-controlled trusts. We look forward to a productive week of insights, networking, and collaboration and welcome our new Chairs, Jonathan Speck and Beatrice P. We wish them the very best in their inaugural year! The latest edition of Investment Views covers the third quarter. It looks at the implications of the Federal Reserve joining the global rate-cutting cycle with a larger-than-expected 50 bps move in September. Both bonds and equities performed well, with the announcement of new stimulus measures in China giving a lift to Chinese equities late in the quarter. The geopolitical situation deteriorated, the oil price fell while gold continued to perform well. Last week, members of our Singapore team attended the Singapore Trustees Association Conference, where Butterfield was a proud Diamond Sponsor. Our Singapore Head of Trust, Mark Farrell, spoke on the ‘International Geopolitical Impacts’ panel with Edmund Leow, John Shoemaker, Michael Wong, and Peter Ni, examining how global politics and the regulatory environment shape the trust and financial services industry. The overall theme for this year’s edition was ‘Honour the Past, Transform the Present, Inspire the Future.’ and our Singapore team was delighted to connect with members of the larger private client intermediary network to discuss the current challenges facing the local ecosystem, and how we can work together to create new solutions for our clients. Executive Chairman Mark Florance commented, “The STA conference is a hugely important event in the calendar as it focuses on the issues affecting the local market specifically, whereas other conferences tend to be more global in nature. It is always well attended, a nod to the pertinence of the presentations and discussions, and the opportunity to network, and we were delighted to attend and serve as a key sponsor.” Thanks to the Singapore Trustees Association for hosting another great event!
